RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study focused on how the relevance of mathematics relates to

choosing the ABM strand among incoming Grade 11 students at the University of

Bohol. The study used the phenomenology type of research design that focus on

the experience of the incoming Grade 11 students about the relevance of

mathematics in taking the ABM strand, how their interests affect their career

choices, and the connection of ABM strand in their chosen career in the future.

The researcher used interview as one of the data gathering instrument. Survey in

the form of questionnaire, we are also gather a qualitative and validated data. It

was divided into two main sections; the profile and the questionnaire proper.

Research Participants

This study examined the relevance of mathematics in choosing the ABM

strand among incoming Grade 11 students at the University of Bohol, aged 14 to

17 years old. These student will be interviewed that are considering to choose

the ABM strand. The respondents were male and female. A sample of 50

students from the total population of the Grade 10 students s.y 2022-2023 were

selected. The session took 2-3 hours to interview all the students that were

selected. Student who are no longer attending classes and those who had been

dropped off/expelled were excluded.

Research Environment

This study was undertaken by the researcher in the vicinity of the

University of Bohol at the Junior High School Department located at Maria Clara

Street, Tagbilaran City, 6300 Bohol.

Research Instrument

Creswell (2012) stated that observation is a set of particular instrument of

gathering open-ended, firsthand information by observing people and places at a

research place. Moreover, Ary (2010) asserted that qualitative observations

depend on narrative or words in describing the setting, the behaviors, and the

interactions. In this observation, the researcher used field notes to record the

data. Ary (2010) stated that the most common research instruments used in

qualitative research are observation, interview, and document analysis. In this

study, the researcher uses observation and interview to collect the data. By the

reason, the researcher is one of the Grade 11 ABM students (2022-2023), so the

researcher interviewed the 50 selected Grade 10 students (2022-2023).

Observation is used to point out the first research problem; that is to find the

relevance of mathematics in choosing ABM strand among incoming Grade 11

students. It is crucial to define the research instrument in this study.

Interviewing was used to assess the student’s perception on the relevance of

mathematics. It was a qualitative interview with 5 items. The description was

based on the answers of the questions. The questionnaires consisted of 5 items:

Significance of the Study

The importance of this study is to recognize the relevance of mathematics to the

students of the University of Bohol who choose to take Accountancy, Business

and Management as their strand. This study can also become a reference or

basis of incoming Grade 11 to see the strength and weaknesses of the ABM

Strand as they take this course. This chapter aims to determine and elaborate

who are the beneficiaries of the study

 To students, this study helps the Grade 10 students to determine the

different factors in consideration of choosing Accountancy, Business and

Management in Senior High School. One must be knowledgeable enough

about the quality of each academic track, particularly the Accountancy

Business and Management, others might determine the advantage of the

students who choose to take the ABM strand which can also fortifying the

ABM students in pursuing ABM strand.

 To the Teachers, one of the aspects that a teacher must prioritize is on

how to build and shape the mindset of every student in the most effective

way. The study will benefit the teachers to distinguish the reason why

some students are afraid to take the ABM strand. Teachers can also apply

their skills to the delivery of career learning and the given data can help

the teachers to think of strategies and techniques on how to handle those

undecided students for pursuing the ABM strand.

 To the Schools, this study will benefit the school because this research

will serve as a key to introduce the new education system, the K to 12

Curriculum to the students. It can serve as a door to see the purpose of

having different strand.

 To the Future Researchers, the study benefits the future researchers to

serve as a useful reference about the process of making and to gain

knowledge from what the researchers have gathered, applied, and

discovered. It will help the researchers to be a better analyst and it can be

a help for the expansion of knowledge for further studies in the future
