1 System Overview
The OMS 870 is a traffic concentrator for use in fiber or copper-based networks.
It handles both Ethernet traffic and TDM traffic and is able to interface to an
Ethernet backbone networks and a TDM backbone network. It can also be used
as a Consolidation Unit (CU) or a Multi-Service Provision Platform (MSPP) to
build the infrastructure in the metro access area.
The OMS 870 is a very flexible network component that can be used in star
networks, ring networks, chained networks, and meshed networks.
The OMS 870 is a fully working standalone SDH Network Element (NE). An
Element Manager (EM) or a Network Manager (NM) that supervises both the
Ethernet and TDM parts of the system manages the OMS 870 remotely. Local
and remote craft interfaces are also supported with a similar user interface.
The TDM part of the OMS 870 is a cross-connect that can work as a terminal
mux, add and drop mux, or non-blocking cross-connect.
The OMS 870 is typically deployed in the operator's point of presence, but
it may also be deployed in customer sites. If more than one customer shall
be handled in a site, the OMS 870 must be mounted in a room that is only
accessible for the operators.
The OMS 870 connects both local customers in the deployment building and
customers in remote sites. A CPE (for example, OMS 860) is used to connect
the remote customers to the OMS 870.
The OMS 870 can be connected to one or multiple customers at a site. The
aggregate capacity and the number of physical interfaces limit the number of
customers. The physical interfaces can be E1, E3, T3, FE and GE.
The OMS 870 provides a number of services at the sites (for example, TDM
leased lines, ISDN PRA, Ethernet leased lines and Internet access).

In this application, the OMS 870 is used to connect up other NEs to the core
SDH or IP network. It is also possible to connect equipment from other vendors
to the OMS 870.
Typically, an internal OMS 870 is used to groom traffic from a number of OMS
870s that are connected to the access network. The internal OMS 870 is
connected to the core network, as shown in Figure 6. Two OMS 870s are
used for redundancy since there is a large amount of traffic that is handled
by the units.

2.1 Overview
The OMS 870 consists of a low-cost shelf (compatible with 19" or ETSI racks)
with support for a variety of service modules and aggregate interfaces. The
shelf includes active circuits, which consist of active backplane interfaces, TDM
cross-connect, Ethernet crossbar and a synchronization function.
The interfaces are shown in the following figure and table. After the table, the
description of each module is given.

2.2 Modules
This section describes the OMS 870 modules.
All modules store inventory data in non-volatile memory. The inventory data is
accessible from the system controller and the management system.
All modules support hot insertion and removal. Insertion or withdrawal of new
modules does not affect the other modules.
An LED, which indicates the module status, and a Reset Switch (RES) is
included in all modules.
Note: The reset switch accessible in front of the system controller module will
reset the OMS 870.
This section provides the information of the alarm and fan module.
The fan module consists of four fans, which operate in pairs; there are two
standby fans and two main fans.
The 'main' and 'stand-by' roles are interchanged every 24 hours to distribute
the wear of the fans evenly.
KB0000190A
One is to provides facilities to report four auxiliary alarm inputs for associated
equipment (for example, power module failure, battery condition, open cabinet
door) and two dedicated alarm outputs.
The other is to provides facilities to report five alarm inputs to the outside
alarm lines.
The alarm input/output connector is placed on the fan unit back cover. See
the figure below.

The module has features that allow power sharing and hot plugging.
The module has separate alarms for two independent primary supplies (< 40 V)
and an alarm for the secondary output (< 4.65 V). The secondary is short circuit
proof and the average secondary current is less than 1 amp. The maximum
secondary current is limited to 26 A.
The cable connects the OMS 870 to the internal 48 V power-rails inside the
rack. The cable and the power-supply meets the safety requirements from the
EN 60950 specification. See the document Cable Diagrams, Reference [1]
for more information.
The figure below shows the interface of the dual power module.
KB0000192A
The -48 V DC power supply covers the -40.5 V DC to -57 V DC range, also
referred to as -48 V DC.
The module generates +5.25 V DC, all other voltages necessary are generated
on each module.
If using two power modules, the current sharing between the two modules is
between 40% and 60%.
The physical connectors of the five interfaces are of the RJ-45 type.
The module provides four LEDs to indicate the status of the OMS 870. The
color and function of the LED's are described in Table 2. A fifth, green LED is
also mounted in the front of the system controller card. This LED indicates the
link status of the management port.
The module interface and the LEDs indications are shown in the below figure

A local Ethernet port (10BaseT), called the Management Port, is available for
connecting to a management DCN.
The OMS 870 offers a VT-100 interface for connection of OMS800 CRAFT
R1.3 Terminal/CLI interface. The interface is running at a data rate of 19,200
baud, no parity, 8 bits, 1 stop bit, and no hardware flow control. VT100 terminal
codes are used.
The synchronization port is used for SETS function on the main card.
Not used.
2.2.4.6 Power
The voltages are generated on board, with the exception of the +5.2 V that
comes directly from the power module(s).
The module is equipped with a reset-circuit that resets the card in case of a
fault in one of the voltages.
The OMS 870 supports up to four service modules. It is possible to freely mix
the four interface modules. There are no fixed positions for specific modules.
This section describes the common functions of the Service modules. For more
details on the different modules, see Section 4 on page 20.
The OMS 870 consists of a unit with a main card with space for up to four
plug-in modules (Service modules). The plug-in modules support a number of
different external interfaces and different transmission media. The internal
interface with the main card are identical for all Service modules.
2.2.5.1 Memory
The modules containing one or more FPGAs also contain a local flash used to
store FPGA configuration data in two banks.
The FPGA configuration is automatically loaded from the active flash bank upon
power-up. New FPGA files can be downloaded from the management system.
Also, the flash bank selection is controlled by the management system.
The modules are connected to the main card through a 16-bit wide time
multiplexed address and data bus. The DXC devices on the main card are
responsible for generating module chip select and the translation from a time
multiplexed bus towards the modules to a separate data and address bus
towards the processor.
2.2.5.4 DCC
The modules terminating one or more STM-N lines are able to terminate both
the DDC-R (192 kbps), and DCC-M (576 kbps) channels.
2.2.5.5 G.Link
2.2.5.6 TDM
2.2.6.1 Instruction
The OMS 870 supports all SFP types given in the appropriate module variant
description. A list of all SFP manufacturers and product numbers qualified for
the OMS 870 is available on the Ericsson extranet product catalog.

• Finisar, FTRJ8519P1BNL
Note: If using other SFP modules than delivered from Ericsson, Ericsson
disclaim responsibility of possible damage or malfunction that might
occur to involved equipment. Ericsson may also introduce coded SFPs
in the future, which will complicate a SW upgrade.
At the moment, in general two S-1e suppliers are qualified to be used in the
OMS 870:
• ITT/AimBridges
Due to the tight solution with the 2x4 ganged SFP cage, only ITT/AimBridges
SFPs can be used in the OMS 870 TM 8xSTM-1 SFP.
The Teridian SFP body outside the cage is too big, and is mechanically not
compatible with the MSA specification. A ganged side-by-side installation is
not possible.
Special slim 1.0/2.3 coaxial cable connectors are required to interface the S-1e
SFPs in the OMS 870 TM 8xSTM-1 SFP. ITT Cannon and Compel are possible
sources for these connectors.
The following events are reported when inserting (and removing) SFPs.
If an SFP is plugged in that is not on the qualified list, the system will still try to
put it in service, but in this case we cannot guarantee for regular behavior.
For OMS 870 R3.4, the SFP Optical TX and RX Level can be read and reported
through the network management system. For more details, see the document
OMS 800 CRAFT R1.3 User Guide, Reference [2].
The OMS 870 can be equipped with AC power adaptor to use 230V AC power.
For more information about the power port or the power cable connector, see
the document Cable Diagrams, Reference [1].

The connector used is a 75-ohm coaxial connector type 1.0/2.3. The screen
on the input connector and the output connector is always DC coupled to the
ground.
5 AC Power Adaptor
The OMS 870 does not include an internal AC power supply. However, it can
still be powered from an AC power source with the help of an external AC
power adaptor.
Special cables for the high-density E1 modules are provided for connection
between OMS 870 and a patch-panel. For more details of the patch panels and
LFH cables, see Cable Diagrams, Reference [1].
