1.4 Installation
This section provides instructions before installing OMS 846 unit.

NOTE! The instructions in this section primarily address the

installation of the OMS 846. Codes and regulations for
installing racks, electrical wiring, raceways, and other
equipment is not covered in this manual,

1.4.1 Requirements to Installation Locations

1.4.1.1 Permanent grounding of equipment

In general, it is not recommended to connect to telecom circuits
exposed to over-voltages, to avoid excessive over-voltage surges in
the equipment and for SAFETY purposes. If connection to TNV-1 or
TNV-2 circuits can not be avoided, installation with a permanent
connection to safety ground is required, minimum 1.0mm2. In
Finland, Norway and Sweden equipment connected to TNV-1 or
TNV-2 should only be installed in a Restricted Area Location (RAL)
by service personnel and be permanently connected to protective
earthing / equipotential bonding.

1.4.1.2 Installation in Restricted Access Location (RAL)

When installed in a telecommunication centre, the OMS 846 must
be properly mounted in a grounded rack with brackets or in other
ways properly connected to safety ground. The OMS 846 DC power
source must not be located outside the RAL.

1.4.1.3 Installation outside RAL

If installed outside a RAL area, the OMS 846 - 48V DC power
source and all communication interfaces connected must comply to
SELV circuits requirements. The -48V DC power must not exceed -
60V DC, and must be powered from an safety certified AC to DC
power supply unit or a battery unit. Connection to building/safety
ground is recommended, but not necessary for safety purposes.

1.4.1.4 Optical Fiber Interfaces

Only interfaces classified as Class-1 laser as specified in IEC
60825-1, IEC 60825-2 or IEC 60825-12, can be used on the optical
interfaces (SFPs).

1/1531-CRA 119 0511/11 Uen A 2007-11-15 5

Marconi OMS 846 R1.1 Quick Reference Guide

1.4.1.5 Definitions

Restricted Access Location (RAL)

A location for equipment where both of the following paragraphs
apply:

• access can only be gained by service persons or by users who

have been instructed about the reasons for the restrictions
applied to the location and about any precautions that shall be
taken; and
• access is through the use of a Tool or lock and key, or other
means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible
for the location.

SELV Circuits
SELV Circuits are ports that have maximum DC working voltage
level less than 60Volt (42.4V AC). In addition, the ports must not be
connected to telecommunication networks in the EN 60950 meaning
of the term (see CEI/ IEC 60950-1 2001-10 standard clause
1.2.13.8).

In practice, the electrical cables shall not exit the building. In

addition, the electrical cables shall connect to equipment that either:

• is installed in RAL, or
• shall not have electrical cables that exits the building unless
those ports are TNV circuits, or
• shall have a written consent or in other ways evident that its
connecting port towards the SELV circuit port is not a
telecommunication network.

Telecommunication Network
A metallically terminated transmission medium intended for
communication between equipment that may be located in separate
buildings, excluding:

• The mains system for supply, transmission and distribution of

electrical power, if used as a telecommunication transmission
medium;
• Cable Distribution System;
• SELV Circuits connecting units of information technology
equipment.

6 1/1531-CRA 119 0511/11 Uen A 2007-11-15

Marconi OMS 846 R1.1 Quick Reference Guide

TNV Circuit
A circuit which is in the equipment and to which the accessible area
of contact is limited and that is so designed and protected that,
under normal operating conditions and single fault conditions (see
CEI/IEC 60950-1 2001-10 standard clause 1.4.14), the voltages do
not exceed specified limit values.

Caution!
When installing in an environment where compliance to safety
standard ETS/EN 60950 is required, consider the following:
If not all interconnections can be classified as SELV, the
equipment must only be installed in Restricted Area Location
(RAL) and be permanent connected to safety-ground via rack or
separate ground.

An additional national requirement applies for Norway, Sweden

and Finland; this equipment must only be installed in Restricted
Area Location (RAL) and be permanent connected to
equipotential bonding.

All interconnected equipment and shielded cabling must be

connected to the same ground potential. The interfaces cables
(especially E1 interfaces) must not run in the same pipes as the
power cables

connector (transmit direction /Out/Tx) and toward the
connector (receive direction /In/Rx).

2. Align the SFP module in front of the slot opening.

Make sure that the SFP module has the correct orientation, either a
latch-up or a latch-down orientation.

3. Insert the SFP module into the slot. Insertion is correct when you
feel the module-connector snap into place in the rear of the slot.

2 Configuration of the OMS 846 2

2.1 Initial configuration

2.1.1 Commissioning of IP address via VT100

Interface
Brief Description
A local terminal with VT100 emulation is required during the first
commissioning of the network element in order to set up the
necessary communications parameters enabling access to the
element via AXX 9820 CRAFT over the Management Port. After the
first commissioning, the VT100 interface can be used for modifying
the communications parameters and perform some status checks of
the network element. The VT100 interface is password protected.

OMSCLI is a line-oriented ASCII-based RS-232 management

interface embedded in the network element. The OMSCLI is
accessed via the VT100-port. The serial connection
communications parameters are fixed:

• 19200 bit/s,
• no parity,
• 8 bits,
• 1 stop bit,
• and no hardware flow control.

VT100 terminal codes are used.

NOTE! Default VT-100 password: omscli

The VT100-port (Console port) for the network element is provided

using a RJ-45 connector. The cable for connecting the VT100-port

to the serial-port on the PC can be provided. The specification of

this cable is the following:

Figure 8 VT100-CABLE (Console cable)

NOTE! Pin 4,5 and 7 are only used for debug purposes.

1. Connect the VT100 interface of the network element to a free

COM port of the PC running the VT100 terminal application.

2. Enter COM port name (e.g. com1) and select OK.

3. A CLI session is invoked by typing omscli in the terminal

window. User authentication (password, 6-12 ASCII characters)
is required, as the following session start-up sequence shows.
Default password is omscli.

Exit:
It is sufficient to type the first characters of the command name to
avoid ambiguity – the same applies to keywords. The BACKSPACE
or DELETE key may be used to edit the command line. Commands
and keywords are not case-sensitive.

The Management Port IP address is a compulsory parameter, and

must be specified by you. All the other parameters (except default
gateway) are defaulted to pre-defined values if they are not
specified.

2.2 Assign an IP-address to the OMS 846

The OMS 846 supports remote management solutions by means of
Telnet and SNMP. The possibilities that regard to connectivity can
be rather advanced for the OMS 846, so the only explained solution
in this document is when directly connected the management-port
(MNGT). For more information refer AXX 9820 CRAFT User Guide
and Technical Reference Manual for OMS 846.

To achieve one of the above mentioned management solutions it is

necessary to assign an IP-address, subnet-mask and if required, a
default-gateway.

System Mode
System mode has one option: IP UNNUMBERED.

The ip unnumbered configuration command allows you to enable IP

processing on any DCN interface (DCC, OSI-tunnel, LICC, etc.)
without assigning it an explicit IP address. The ip unnumbered
interface can "borrow" the IP address of the MNGT interface already
configured on the NE.

2.2.0.1 Assign an IP-address

The command for IP configuration is:

OMSCLI>Device\Management-Configuration\IP-Configuration
IP-ADDRESS=193.69.136.104 SUBNET-MASK=255.255.255.0

For most commands, if no parameters are supplied then all the

current parameter values are displayed.

OMSCLI>IP-Configuration
IP-ADDRESS: 10.0.0.1
SUBNET-MASK: 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT-GATEWAY: 10.0.0.254 (optional)

1/1531-CRA 119 0511/11 Uen A 2007-11-15 27

2.2.1 Change Passwords

OMSCLI>ch ?
Usage:
Change-Passwords
[OMSCLI-PASSWORD=<string[6:12]>]
[TELNET-PASSWORD=<string[6:12]>]

By this command, TELNET and OMSCLI passwords can be

changed. Both passwords can be changed in the same command or
they can be changed one by one.

2.2.2 Configure Community-handler

The following example shows how to set community for a default
user. If you want to set the community for a specific user, enter the
corresponding IP address instead of 0.0.0.0. If you enter 0.0.0.0., a
log-on can be done from any IP address.

The network element supports three community access levels:

• ReadOnly - only read access to the whole MIB

• ReadWrite - read and write to the MIB, but can not change
community strings
• Super - read and write to the complete MIB.
The community value is working as a password when you later will
log on with AXX 9820 CRAFT.

1. OMSCLI>com

2. Press Enter.

3. OMSCLI>Community-handler\ ?

4. Press Enter.

*** current menu path:

COMMUNITY: public
ACCESS: super
TRAPS: disable

OMSCLI>Community-handler\

When “traps” is enabled, the OMS 846 automatically sends

notifications to the management system.

2.2.3 Erase a Community string

To remove a community string, the following command can be used:

1. CLI>Community-Handler\remove manager=0.0.0.0
community=public

2. Press Enter.

MANAGER: 0.0.0.0
COMMUNITY: public
removed.

2.2.4 Configure User Management (UMA)

UMA is an extension to the basic SNMPv1 authentication and
access control model. This extension consists of a client software
process, a server software process residing in the target hardware
and in the craft and/or element manager respectively. The
application provides extended authentication and access control of
SNMP clients.

Read more about UMA in the Marconi OMS 846 Technical

Reference and the AXX 9820 CRAFT User guide.

It is possible to turn on or off the UMA function through the OMS

Command Line Interface (OMSCLI) application.
