2.2.1 Set Relations

Equal sets – are sets which exactly the same elements and number of elements
regardless the order of enumeration.
- The relationship is written as A = B
Example: A = {M, A, T, H} B = (T, A, H, M}

Equivalent sets – are sets with the same number of elements.

- Equivalent sets may be denoted by the symbol
A B.

Example: A = {a, b, c, d} B = {20, 21, 22, 23}

Joint sets – are sets with common elements

Example: G = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} L = {4, 5, 7, 8, 9}

Disjoint sets – are sets with no common elements

Example: M = {a, e, I, o, u} N = {b, c, d, f}

Seatwork # 2.2.1
A. Give pairs of sets that are equal.
A = {a, b, c}
B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} 1.
C = {l, o, v, e} 2.
D = {c, a, b} 3.
E = {4, 3, 2, 5, 1}
F = {o, v, l, e}

B. Tell which pair of sets equivalent

V = {x|x is a letter in the word “rose”}
X = {letters of the word “rode”}
W = {x|x is a letter in the word “sore”}
Z = {d, r, o, e}
1.
2.

C. Tell which of the following statements describe the relation of the pairs of
sets.
A=B
A B
A and B are joint sets
A and B are disjoint sets

1. A = {numbers divisible by 2 and less than 9}

B = {2, 4, 6, 8}

2. A = {months of the year}

B = {one dozen of eggs}
