owned and traded.
• The concept of pure capitalism was first described in 1776 by a Scottish economist named

Types of Economies
Laissez-Faire
• Smith advocated a laissez-faire (from the French “to let alone”) economic system in which
the government does not interfere with the free market at all, allowing the interplay of supply
and demand to determine prices.

Types of Economies
Keynesian Economics
• In later years, other economists, such as John Maynard Keynes, argued that in the real world,
governments must use a combination of tax and spending programs to stabilize a capitalist-
based economy.

Types of Economies
Central Planning
• Some countries have installed economies based on central planning—in other words,
government ownership of a country’s resources and government control of its economic
activities.
• All the means of production in the Soviet Union were owned by the state, which decided what
would be produced and when.
• In a socialist country, many of the largest industries (such as the transportation industry or
the steel industry) are owned and operated by the government, as is a comprehensive
system of public welfare.

Types of Economies
Mixed Economy
• The United States, like most countries today, practices a modified version of capitalism,
sometimes called a mixed economy.
• The government regulates some aspects of business (for example, the Food and Drug
Administration makes sure that products sold in our stores will not poison us) and offers
some social welfare systems, but the majority of economic decisions are made by private
individuals and companies.

Types of Economies
Entrepreneurialism
• The practice of taking on the risk of starting a business with the hope of paying off in
substantial profits.
• Entrepreneurs either sell their business for a large amount of money or continue developing
their businesses.
