Skater girl
power
ImillaSkate
is a female
skateboarding
collective from
Cochabamba,
in central
Bolivia,
launched in
2018 “as a cry
for inclusion”,
says its
founder Dani
Santiváñez, 26.
Imilla means
”girl” in
the native
Quechua
and Aymara
languages.
They wear
polleras, the
bulky skirts
associated with
indigenous
women – once
an object of
discrimination
– as a symbol
of resistance,
borrowing
them from
aunts and
grandmothers.
“We believe
everyone
deserves
respect.
Diversity
makes
beauty,” says
Santiváñez.
