I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Mathematics is generally considered as basic preparation of every

informed citizen and serves as a gateway into numerous career choices in

life. It is also the prime vehicle for developing students’ logical thinking and

higher order cognitive skills. Numbers is a basic concept in mathematics.

However, according to the study of Nur, Andi Saparuddin et al., (2022)

Game-Based Learning: Improving the Level of Performance of Grade 7 Learners along Addition
and Subtraction on Integers using Combination Of Colors (COC)
By Joshua C. Ciano and Roy Lawrence Frias
entitled “The Learning Trajectory Construction of Elementary School

Students in Solving Integer word problem” students still frequently

experience misconceptions, especially in negative integer, count

operations. Game-Based Learning strengthen the motivation of students

to participate during the discussion. According to Edoho, Emmanuel

Asuquo et al., (2020) teaching with instructional materials has a

significant effect on students’ academic performance in mathematics.

Play is a significant issue in children’s lives and can be used as a way for

teaching and learning. according to the study of Weijie, Mao., et al (2022)

entitled “Effect of Game-Based Learning on student’s Critical Thinking: A

Meta-Analysis” showed that Game-Based Learning had a significant

positive overall effect on students’ critical thinking and showed significant

heterogeneity.

In view of this we conducted a descriptive research entitled “Game-Based

Learning: Improving the Performance of Grade 7 Learners along Addition

and Subtraction on Integers using Combination Of Colors (COC)”. Upon

diagnosting the performance of grade 7 learners along operations on

integers for the SY: 2019-2020, only 20% of the grade 7 learners

understand the lesson. By the use of this game-based learning the

researchers want to improve the performance of the grade 7 learners

along this lesson.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This action research initiative aimed to determine the improvement of

Grade 7 learners along Addition and Subtraction on Integers in Tabgon

National High School SY: 2022-2023.

Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of performance of Grade 7 learners?

2. What is the level of performance of Grade 7 learners using COC?

3. What is the significant difference of grade 7 learners using COC?

EXPECTED OUTPUT:

1. At the end of this research at least 50% of Grade 7 learners improve

their performance along Operation on Integers.

2. At the end of this research this game-based learning can be apply by

mathematics 7 teachers in teaching operation on integers.

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

Game-Based Learning: COC (Combinations Of Colors) will used

by the researcher to addressed the issue of grade 7 students along

operations on integers. COC help the learners to cope up and improve

their performance along operation on integers in a more participative and

interactive way of learning inside the classroom. The game will be

implemented by the researcher to improve the performance of Grade 7

learners of Tabgon National High School along operation on integers for

the SY 2022-2023.

COC (Combination of Colors) – This game will be implemented

using cards filled with colors (red-indicates positive integers and blue-

indicates negative integers) with numbers. For the students to easily

understand the concept of operation on integers, the researcher used

improvised cards filled with colors having different sizes according to the

number written inside the card. Using this card, the students can easily

operate addition and subtraction of integers by combining the colors.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

This action research will employ descriptive method of research in

discussing the answers of the three research questions posted.

a. Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information

This study only concentrates on measuring the level of

performance on Operation on Integers of Grade 7 learners of Tabgon National

High School using Game-Based Learning.

Data Gathering Methods

For question number 1: The researchers administered an assessment

consisting of 20 item questions to measure their performance about Operations on

Integers.

For question number 2: The researchers administered an assessment

consisting of 20 item questions to measure their performance about Operations on

Integers after the discussion using Game-Based Learning.

For question number 3: The researcher uses the data gathered from the

assessment to test its significant difference using T-test.
