1. Re-visit the philosophical perspectives of the self.

Identify which among them best reflect your

personal philosophy of how you make sense of who you are. Explain why by incorporating topics that
were discussed.

Growing up, I always ask myself “Who I am exactly?” – a straightforward question yet difficult to answer.
At every stage of my life, there are abrupt realizations that struck my mind. From time to time, these
understandings filled my thoughts with curiosity as I try to figure out things about myself. My lived
experiences, mustered knowledge, and most importantly, my learnings in life were like nothing but
things that just passed by because I was doubtful if those things are what I truly desire myself to be.
Fretted by this personal crisis, I came into a verdict to find myself first before anything else, as self-
knowledge is vital in perceiving one’s true capabilities and potentials. That being said, this act of finding
myself coincides with Socrates’ philosophical view about thyself. On this perspective, he firmly believed
that all difficult things that life has to offer will be eradicated once a person knows himself to the core.
After continuously seeking for myself, I was able to find my purpose in all the things that I do. Unlike
before, I do things now not for the sake of conforming with tasks and responsibilities dictated by
everybody else, but rather based from the choices that I truly aspire the most.

2. Based on this discussion about sociological perspectives of the self, justify whether one’ social self is
existent or not given that we are interacting in digitize environments. Explain your answer in detail.

With the advent of different social applications nowadays, the world we used to know have gone to
digitalization. Another factor that brought these advancements is the pandemic, wherein physical
interactions is strictly prohibited. In the absence of these real-time socializations, technology importantly
paved a new platform for an interactive communication with others even though they are afar. Notably
speaking, “Social Distancing” became the word of this year’s ongoing health crisis. Based from its literal
meaning, it refers to the conscious way of distancing ourselves from others six (6) meters apart but
socializing did not end there. Although we’re physically separated by this pandemic, we still meet and
greet people virtually because during these grueling times, a support system from others is what we
ultimately seek for to keep moving forward.

3. Culture and the Self relate with one another. Explain how culture help define how individuals see
themselves and how they relate to others.

Every one of us is uniquely involved to various groups of people with their very own characteristics,
customs and beliefs. As we acquire our personal identity, cultural factors alter the way that we perceive
ourselves as a whole. Cultural background and heritage directly influence one’s personality, in such a
way, it molds a person according to the generally accepted norms of a specific group. A person is to
relate himself with others to better know himself from the roots. Furthermore, culture cultivates self-
identity while self-identity enriches cultural belonginess.
