Forms of Energy

1. A fresh water lake with an area of 2400 m2 and an average depth of 5m is

located in a mountainous region which is 350m above a valley floor. What is the
PE stored in this lake of water.

2. An airplane has a mass of 196 000 kg and carries 400 passengers having an
average mass of 60 kg each. What is the total energy of the loaded airplane
when travelling @ 820 Km/hr at a height of 9500 m above sea level?

3. A large hotel requires 1500 liters per hour of hot water at a temperature of 90 oC.
Water enters the heater at a temperature of 25 oC and is heated by the
combustion of fuel oil having a combustion of fuel oil having a calorific value of
40000 kJ/kg. If the fuel costs $1.02 per kg. What is the daily cost of fuel for the
heating of water in the hotel?

4. A crane is used to lift a load of bricks to the top of a new office building. Calculate
the work done if the load of bricks weighs 1600N and the building is 50m tall.
Compare the work done with potential energy of the bricks when @ the top of the
building.

5. A force of 1200N is req’d. to propel a motor car @ 99 Km/hr along a level road.
Ignoring all loses, determine the power output needed from the engine.

6. The output shaft of an engine delivers a torque of 66 Nm. If the shaft rotates 240
times in 4.2 seconds, calculate the power output of the engine.( A typical motor
car engine produces 25 KW )

7. In a heat treatment process, a cast iron component with a mass of 40 kg is

heated from 30oC to 700oC in 7 minutes in a furnace. Calculate the heating
power of the furnace, assume that the specific heat capacity of cast iron is 0.5
KJ/kg K.

8. An electric motor is used to drive the shaft of a small water pump. During a
performance test, the torgue on the motor shaft is found to be 7.16 N.m when the
motor is drawing 600 W of electrical power. What is the rotational speed of the
pump shaft?

9. An elevator and its contents has a mass of 1200 kg. What is the electrical power
to the lifting motor if the elevator is raised through a height of 36 m in 32
seconds? Assume that only 86% of the electrical power input to the motor is
available to lift the elevator.

10.A motor driven pump transfers 5505 liters of oil per hour through an elevation of
18m If the specific gravity of the oil is 0.8, what is the monthly cost of running the
pump motor if it operates for 8 hours every day and electricity cost PhP 3.50 per
KW-hr?
