Project Title: CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDING (Residential)

TARGETS SET FOR THE WEEK

To understand alternate building materials, post excavation process, test for bricks.

ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE WEEK

1. Fly-ash bricks were used instead of regular bricks in the construction of one bedroom flat

constructed for people below poverty line (B.P.L).Following are the advantages stated by the

engineer:

*Its strength is more as compared to regular clay bricks, therefore it does not break during

transportation.

*It does not require 24 hours soaking in water, sprinkling of water will be enough.

*It has low water absorption.

*It is also light weight and use of mortar is also reduced.

2. After excavation is done the earth which comes out is transported through trucks to other place

where filling is required. By using brick and mortar & dumpy level reference points are marked

on the ground according to which other excavation is carried out .All these points should be at

same level ,which is checked by using dumpy level. PCC is done after this and all the slabs are also

checked using dumpy level.

3. There are number of test for bricks ,but in the laboratory of site we have carried out

compressive strength test for bricks :

 Five numbers of whole bricks from sample collected should be taken .the dimensions
should be measured to the nearest 1mm

 Immerse in water at room temperature for 24 hours. The moisture is drain out at
room temperature. Fill the frog and all voids in the bed faces flush with cement mortar
(1:3, cement: sand). Store it under the damp jute bags for 24 hours filled by
immersion in clean water for 3 days .Remove and wipe out any traces of moisture.

Procedure
(I) Place the specimen with flat face s horizontal and mortar filled face facing upwards
between plates of the testing machine.

(II) Apply load axially at a uniform rate of 14  per minute till failure occurs and note
maximum load at failure.

(III) The load at failure is maximum load at which the specimen fails to produce any further
increase in the indicator reading on the testing machine.

*The bricks used had the compressive strength of 8.2 , and was classified by the
engineer as second class bricks.

FUTURE WORK PLANS

Next week I am going to study about raft foundation, R.M.C. plant ,etc.
