The Academic Word List (AWL) Practice

Vocabulary is one of the fundamental aspects of language learning. One challenge faced by most language
learners is knowing what words are worth learning, especially in reading and writing academic texts. The aim
of the exercise is to improve English Language Learners’ repertoire of academic word list not just at the
knowledge level but also at the levels of comprehension, application, and synthesis. Learn Academic Words in
Practice is a series of ten volumes setting short term vocabulary learning goals based on the AWL
subdivisions. The AWL has been divided into 10 rank ordered sublists containing 60 items according to the
decreasing frequency of word families. In order to improve your vocabularies, you will have to finish a Sublist
every week and you will be tested to assess your quality of learning.

• You have to practice the sublists in orderly manner (i.e. start from sublist 1 and finish at sublist 10)
• You will be tested on most of the sublist but not all of them
• Sublists will be discussed in class, and you have to practice the sublists in your own time. You can
access the website anywhere and anytime
• Website: http://www.englishvocabularyexercises.com/academic-word-list/index.html#sublist1
• The first graded exercise will take place next week during the class scheduled time but it will be online
on Blackboard.
