PAST CONTINUOUS
REMEMBER:
PAST CONTINUOUS
The past continuous to describe an action in progress at a specific moment in the past.
Usar la expression de tiempo es opcional.
Examples:
AFIRMATIVE FORM:
 I was watching TV.
 Susan and I were cleaning the kitchen yesterday morning.
Structure:
David was writing a letter (yesterday).
subject + was/were + verb ing + complement + time expression
NEGATIVE FORM:
 I wasn´t watching TV one hour ago.
 Susan and I weren’t cleaning the kitchen yesterday morning.
Structure:
David wasn’t writing a letter yesterday.
subject + wasn’t/weren’t + verb ing + complement + time expression
INTERROGATIVE FORM:
 Were you watching TV one hour ago?
Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
 Was Susan cleaning the kitchen yesterday morning?
Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t.
Structure:
Was David writing a letter yesterday?
was/were + subject + verb ing + complement + time expression

• Yes, he was.
• No, he wasn’t.
Time expressions for past continuous
Rules
1. You add ing for the most of verbs. (agregas ing para la mayoría de los verbos)
Work – working
Sing – singing
Watch – watching
2. When a verb ends in a vowel, you eliminate the vowel and add –ing
(Cuando un verbo termina en vocal, eliminas la vocal y agregas –ing)

Write – writing
Dance – dancing
Drive – driving
Exception when the verb ends in –o
Do – doing
Go - going
3. When a verb ends in consonant – vowel – consonant, you double the last
consonant and add –ing.
(Cuando un verbo termina en consonante-vocal-consonante, duplicas la última consonante y agregas –
ing)
Swim – swimming
Run – running
Get – getting
Exceptions
Listen – listening
Fix - fixing
Box - boxing

PAST CONTINUOUS
• We use past continuous for an action in progress at a specific time.
They were writing a song .
I was buying fruits.

SIMPLE PAST
• We use simple past for mention a completed action
I took a photo.
She drove a car.
They were writing a song When I took the photo.
When I took the photo, They were writing a song.
SIMPLE PAST VS PAST CONTINUOUS
• We can use simple past and past continuous in a sentence.
• The simple past interrup an action that it was happening.
• We can use “when (cuando) and while (mientras) ”
Examples
I was sleeping when the phone rang.
When the phone rang, I was sleeping.

Carlos was eating while the baby cried.


While the baby cried, Carlos was eating.
I was running when the accident happened.
When the accident happened, I was running.

Camila and Rosa were playing basquet when the tree fell.
When the tree fell, Camila and Rosa were playing basquet.

Juan was playing while his brother did his homework.


While his brother did his homework, Juan was playing.

I was cooking spaghetti while Alexis cleaned the house.


While Alexis cleaned the house, I was cooking spaghetti.
EXERCISES
Write 5 pairs of sentences using “when” and 5 pair of sentences using “while” and translate.
