Physical Education Quiz (Badminton)

1. As with all sports there is a governing body. What is the governing body of badminton? Explain.

The governing body of badminton is the Badminton World Federation or BWF. BWF is responsible for
promoting, managing, developing, and regulating the sport worldwide. The organization was formed on the 5th
of July 1934 and its headquarters is currently located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. To date, BWF has 176 member
nations around the world

2. How many feathers should be in a shuttle cock? Label the parts and explain.

There are 16 feather on a shuttle cock.

Parts of a shuttle cock:

Cork head – The heaviest part of a shuttle cock. This is the part that is hit by the racket
Glue – Used to hold the base of the feathers attached to the cork head
Feather stem – This is what is attached to the cork head
Lining or coil – Used to hold the feathers to maintain the shape of the shuttle cock
Feather head – Responsilbe for giving the shuttle cock the stability it needs during its “flight” when hit by a
racket
3. How many times can a player strike a shuttle cock before it flies over the net? Explain.

A player can only hit the shuttle cock once. Hitting it more than once is considered as a fault and the opposing
side wins a point.

4. Explain the scoring system in badminton

o A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.


o Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
o The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
o At 20 all, the side which gains a 2-point lead first, wins that game.
o At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
o The side winning a game serves first in the next game.

Singles
At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from the right service
court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court.

If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court.

If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the
appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.

Doubles

o A side has only one ‘set’.


o The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.
o At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When it
is odd, the server serves from the left court.
o If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves again from the
alternate service court.
o If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side becomes the new serving
side.
o The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when their side is serving.

If players commit an error in the service court, the error is corrected when the mistake is discovered

5. When the shuttle travels flat across the court it is known as what? Explain.

It is called a “Drive.” It is an effective move that is hit to the opponent’s rear court. When used properly, it forces
the opponent to lift the shuttle in reply w/c allows the other player to deliver a smash.
