Mrigasring

In Rasashastra the use of mrigshring was done for treatment of various


diseases. Its reference can be found in Atharvaveda also. In Bruhatrayi it
is mentioned in Sushruta samhita which describes Mashi kalpana. A
short description is available in Rasa tarangini 12/105-107.

General Description

It is jangama dravya abtained from deer (Cervus dama of cervidae


family) especially from antilopes. Antilopes are hunted for various
benefits such as horns, skin, meat, etc.

Deer and Antlers(Horns)

Mrigashringa (deer horn) which is used for the purpose of medicine


should be long, should possess small outgrowths, it should be heavy
and firm.

Sanskrit- Haranasing

English- Hart’s horn, Deer horn

Colour- white

Odour- odourless

Tasteless

Samanya karma -Powder- nutritive and demulcent


Dose- 15 to 25 grains

Anupana- ghee, milk or cream

Indications- heart burn, gastritis, abdominal colic, Cough, asthma,


low fever, loss of appetite and phosphaturia especially in children.

Therapeutic uses

• Hiccup- Fumes of horn are recommended

• Internally used in painful affections of joints, sciatica, lumbago,


cardialgia, pleurodynia and other affections of heart

Shodhana procedure

References of shodhana procedure of Mrigashringa are not available


but according to author of Ayurvediya Rasashastra Dr. Siddhinandan
Mishra it should be boiled in swarasa or kwath of Amla (sour)
dravya’s.

Marana procedure – Mrigashrunga bhasma preparation

2types of marana procedure are given after shodhana

1. Krishna bhasma preparation

Take mrigashringa and cut it into pieces then place them in sharava
samputa and subject it for heating in gajaputa after it becomes cool
open the samputa, now obtain the powder and give bhavana with
Arka kshira, then make it into chakrika’s and again subject to
gajaputa, process should be repeated three times. Thus we obtain
Krishna bhasma of mrigashringa.

2. Shweta bhasma preparation

Place mrigashringa on burning charcoal , when they become hot


remove them and make it into powder in khalva yantra and give
bhavana with Arka kshira, then make it into chakrika’s and subject to
gajaputa, process should be repeated three times. Thus we obtain
shweta bhasma of mrigashringa.

Therapeutic uses of Mrigashrunga bhasma

1. Hrudaya shula – mrigashrunga bhasma is mixed with ghee or


butter and given internally.
2. Parshvashula –bhasma is mixed with honey and given internally
3. Shwasa (asthma, Bronchitis) – bhasma is mixed with bharangi
churna , marich churna and pippali churna and given internally.
4. Hikka (hiccups) – bhasma is mixed with apamarga tandula and
pippali churna and used internally.

Dose – 1-2 ratti (125to 400mg)

Anupana – cow’s ghee, madhu etc

Chemical composition –

Iron in feSo4 form -32%w/w

Calcium -25%w/w

Phosphorus – 43% w/w

Magnesium – 4%w/w

Calcium carbonate -31% w/w

Phrmacological Actions -
Shringa Bhasma mainly acts as expectorant and mucolytic. A list of
medicinal properties of Shring bhasma is given below:

Indications
Shringa Bhasma is used in respiratory disorders accompany with a
productive cough, wheezing, chest congestion, chest tightness, chest
pain or fever. The main therapeutic indications include:
1. Productive Cough
2. Bronchitis
3. Pleurisy
4. Pneumonia
5. Intercostal Neuralgia
6. Influenza
7. Common Cold
8. Chest Pain
9. Angina Pectoris
10.Chronic Fever or Fever in Tuberculosis
11.Rickets
12.Pyorrhea
13.Pyelonephritis

Benefits & Medicinal Uses


Shringa Bhasma is mainly beneficial in respiratory disorders and bone
disorders. It also provides strength the bones, joints, cartilages, lungs
and heart.
Dosage & Administration

The general dosage of Shringa Bhasma is as follows.

Infants 20 to 60 mg *

Children 50 to 125 mg *

Adults 125 to 375 mg *

Pregnancy 50 to 125 mg *

Geriatric (Old age) 125 to 250 mg *

Safety Profile
Shringa Bhasma is LIKELY SAFE and WELL TOLERATED, when used
in therapeutic dosage described above.

Side Effects

There are no side effects observed with the use of Shringa Bhasma.

Contraindications

Dry cough is an absolute contraindication of Shringa Bhasma. It


produces dryness in the airways, which may worsen the dry cough.
