Right Data. Right Place. Right Time

Let’s start with a major goal for our customers which is digital transformation. This is centered on achieving
competitive advantage through insights gained from data. However, we know from industry analysts that
many transformation projects are failing. The issue boils down to this: Organizations need the RIGHT data,
at the right PLACE, and at the right TIME – and this is harder than you might think. Our aim is to accelerate
data-driven innovation by enabling intelligent data operations which deliver analytic insights, data
governance and increased agility. We call this the DataOps advantage.

Data Stairway to Value (SEAM)

Store

 The Data Stairway to Value is a simple model which can be used to guide a customer conversation and
to navigate the spectrum of our capabilities at a holistic level.

 We can add value to our customers across every step. At the bottom, the value we provide is more
operational – such as 100% data availability and lower cost of ownership. Towards the top right, returns
on data will be more transformational such as driving new revenue streams or revolutionizing customer
experience.

 Engagement can start at any level. This may be driven by the contacts you have relationships with.
However, to really tackle our customers’ transformation goals, we need to be aiming towards the top
right which requires confidence talking at a business level to senior stakeholders.

 The model starts with storing data. This level also includes managing and protecting data as well as the
underlying infrastructure, compute and networking, to process and mobilize it.

 Data needs to be enriched with metadata. This means adding descriptors so that information can be
found, classified and more easily governed.

 Activating data is about putting it in the hands of those who need it. This includes integrating data from
multiple sources and feeding it into analytics processes.

 To monetize data, customers need to derive insights which will power their business models. To help
them, we have applications which can leverage data for specific business needs.

 Our ability to solve challenges across this whole spectrum is what sets Hitachi Vantara apart. It is the
combination of technologies and services from across the portfolio, which make the value
of the whole greater than the sum of the parts. A large part of your success will depend on
your understanding of what you can do for your customer with these solutions in your kit-
bag. The aim of this course is to get you started.

Performance Hybrid Capacity

 Every organisation is challenged by data which needs to be stored, protected, governed and made
available securely to those who need it.

 In most cases, storage infrastructure will include a mixture of vendors.

 Storage serves a variety of applications, each with differing needs for performance and capacity.

 New storage technologies like Flash, have enabled solutions to specialize.

 All-Flash systems have become the norm for high performance applications. These now include NVMe
which is a new connectivity technology which makes solid-state storage even faster. Also watch out for
Storage Class Memory, or SCM, which is available on the high end VSP 5000 and potentially on other
models in the future.

 Traditional SAS hard drives have continued to grow in capacity.

 Some vendors provide hybrid solutions which can accommodate both.

 Organizations also have the option of using Public Cloud for their applications and storage. Typically,
with more than one vendor, this is called “multi-cloud”.

 Moving data between these silos has become a major headache. And yet it’s something that needs to
happen for two main reasons:
‐ Cost optimization
The cost per terabyte of stored data varies considerably and so needs to be placed on the right
media. Flash is highly expensive – so should only be used where its performance is
required.
‐ The second reason is Technology Refresh
All data sitting on the old system needs to be moved at least once as it is
decommissioned, and the new system brought online.
These challenges are compounded further when we consider geography and the global nature of many of
our customers.
Hitachi Ops Center
Enterprise
Midrange

Common operating system

 Hitachi Vantara technology can tackle these challenges in three ways:

‐ The first is to provide hybrid storage which can accommodate flash and traditional hard-drives in a
single system. Significantly, our solution includes Hitachi Dynamic Tiering which means data can be
moved seamlessly and automatically, between tiers of storage. So, for example, from Flash to hard
disk drives.
‐ Secondly, we offer a single family of storage devices called Virtual Storage Platform or VSP. This
means customers can simply choose which systems they need based on performance and capacity.
Midrange systems can scale upwards by adding disk trays. Enterprise systems have a higher degree
of scalability. Migration between systems is easy due to having a common operating system and
management tools.
‐ Thirdly, every VSP, as suggested by the name, is capable of storage virtualization.
 This is technology which can combine storage systems together into a single pool – meaning that data
can be moved from device to device non-disruptively - so applications keep running. Dynamic tiering can
now be extended to these disparate systems.

 Hitachi storage virtualization can encompass storage from other vendors with no need for re-formatting,
making it uniquely valuable to customers with a diverse and distributed infrastructure who wish to extend
the lifetime of existing assets.

 In addition, these older systems can inherit many of the modern features which VSP has on offer and
can now be managed by Hitachi Ops Center.

Hitachi Content
Platform

 Hitachi Vantara delivers a flexible set of storage management offerings that start with embedded
management, typically best suited for the entry and midrange markets with upgrades or options to go
directly to federated management as delivered through the Hitachi Ops Center suite which will be
discussed later in this section.

 Most customers will be using public cloud for at least some of their applications and storage.

 One of the popular choices for long term retention of data in the cloud is object storage. This is because
of its extremely low cost per terabyte and its inherent resilience (it does not need backing up). Hitachi
Vantara provides several ways of tiering to object storage and importantly, can achieve this to public
cloud or to a private cloud solution called Hitachi Content Platform (or HCP) which can also enhance
data governance.
So now if we return to our view of a global customer, we can see that their storage infrastructure has
become simplified and easier to govern. Management can now be achieved using Hitachi’s management
suite – Hitachi Ops Center.

CDP = Continuous Data Protection

 Data has always been a critical asset and of course needs to be protected from loss or corruption.
However, as organizations become more data-driven, simply keeping copies of data for protection
purposes has become highly expensive, complex and risky.

 The situation is challenging organizations from three perspectives:

‐ The first relates to recovery – keeping copies of data is only worthwhile if there is a fast and reliable
way of recovering from lost data, and in some cases, continuing business operations without a glitch.
‐ The second relates to Governance – IDC reckons on average there are 13 copies of data and Gartner
indicates 28% of data resides only on mobile devices. From a governance perspective, in the light of
increasing regulations, this can become a liability and controls need to be put in place.
‐ The third relates to Agility – with the rise of DevOps and demands to release products and adapt
business models just to stay ahead, services are required which maintain secured access to data
throughout its lifecycle.

 Hitachi’s solution goes beyond simply data protection and is better described as Enterprise Copy Data
Management.

 Our storage solutions include a range of technologies which can support data Recovery, Agility and
Governance.

 To realize full potential from these, we have an orchestration tool called Ops Center Protector. In
combination – these provide our Enterprise Copy Data Management services.

 Ops Center Protector provides modern data protection capabilities across many environments. Let’s see where it
really shines.

 Large databases, let’s say 3TB or more, present real challenges for data protection. As the data grows, customers
experience extended, often unacceptable backup times or, more importantly, longer recovery times.

 When placed on Hitachi storage devices, Ops Center Protector provides:

‐ Instant Protection using snapshots which avoids backup window issues and allows the creation of more frequent
recovery points (so achieving much better recovery point objectives).
‐ Instant restore plus full, application aware restores. We can optionally automate many of the application steps
required to recover and so improve recovery time objectives.
‐ Disaster Recovery capabilities provide disaster recovery and failover management using synchronous,
asynchronous and High Availability active-active replication technologies.
‐ Furthermore, it can provide both local and remote data instances, which protects against primary array failure
and maintains recovery points even if the first array is unavailable.
‐ And Agile Copy Services automate data repurposing for use cases like DevOps, reporting or analytics. Ops
Center Protector makes it easy to create and refresh copy data on a schedule or using ad hoc triggers.

 For additional data protection, Hitachi VSP integrates with industry leading applications offered by Veritas,
Commvault and Veeam. All of which allow a full data protection to be applied to meet your customers size and
needs.

 There is an old saying in IT that if you don’t have three copies of your data – you don’t have your data.
This may sound a little over the top but consider this – IDC research indicates that on average, there are
13 copies of data in existence. This is a real challenge.

 This is not driven by data protection requirements alone. Think of a file you may have generated –
perhaps a Word document. Do you have it in more than one place on your hard drive? Have you shared
it? How many people did you share it with? How many copies do they have?

 Another huge concern for customers is data governance. Let’s imagine now that our Word document
contains customer information including personal details and some transaction history. Now, this data is
putting the organization at risk from a slew of governance regulations. Having potentially 13 copies of it
turns this headache into a nightmare.

HCP Anywhere

Laptop Network Copy

 Consider this: about 80% of data is unstructured – sitting typically in files (as opposed to databases).
This type of data is a great fit for object storage. Our object store is called Hitachi Content Platform or
HCP.

 HCP Anywhere is an additional product which is installed with the HCP and a plug-in is installed on the
laptop. This runs an automated file synchronization process between the laptop and HCP which runs in
the background. This avoids the need for any network copies. Only one instance of the file is needed on
HCP (due to a single-instancing process). Files are also compressed.

 HCP Anywhere can also synch files to mobile devices like phones and tablets, providing protected
access to files on the move.

 One of the benefits of object storage is that it is self-healing. It can be architected to span two or more
locations with the data spread across the system such that if any part of the system fails, it can re-
construct the missing data. The result is highly protected storage which eliminates the need for backups
completely.

 When a file needs to be shared, the user can send a link to the file in HCP. The file is not copied into
email – recipients can access the original via the link thus eliminating email attachments.

 With files now stored in HCP and copies reduced, it is easier for IT to apply governance policies.

 This example tackles user generated file data but is not all encompassing.

 Enterprise Copy Data Management and Data Protection are covered in more detail in another module –
however, HCP potentially has a role to play here too. It can make an ideal target for a data protection
solution due its long-term retention capabilities and low cost per terabyte.

HCP Gateway

HCP Anywhere

Laptop Public Cloud

 Another feature of HCP is that it can act as a secure gateway to Public Cloud.

 This means, based on policies defined by the customer, data within the HCP can reside either on-
premise in low-cost commodity storage, or can be migrated seamlessly to one or more public cloud
providers. This provides a unique level of flexibility for our customers.

 HCP Gateway is software that can be deployed in remote offices. It provides a local network file share,
eliminating the need for file servers or NAS devices. It has the benefit that files are automatically copied
to the HCP meaning they are fully protected.

Gateway Hitachi Content Intelligence

 Let’s summarize Hitachi Content Platform:

‐ It is a massively scalable, low cost-per-terabyte data store which can help improve governance of data
across an organization, even out to public cloud. It can eliminate the need for backups as it is self-
healing.
‐ Coupled with HCP Anywhere, it can replace network file shares and provide access to data even on
mobile devices.
‐ HCP Gateway extends the platform out to remote offices and provides local file services whilst
keeping a centralized copy in HCP.
‐ Being an object store – HCP can be used to store enriched data. Objects include the original file as
well as metadata which describes the file. This can be used to support analytics, data quality
assurance and a huge range of other use cases. This aspect of HCP is covered in more detail in the
module on Data Enrichment and Hitachi Content Intelligence.

Software for File

 The newest offerings in the HCP family include:

‐ HCP Cloudscale, which is a new generation of HCP designed using a micro-services architecture.
This results in virtually unlimited scalability as well as much more flexibility for deployment within a
private or public cloud environment.
‐ And Hitachi Content Software for File which adds the ability for extremely high-performance data
mining, used for example to assist in machine learning projects.
Converged and
Hyperconverged
Network

Servers

Storage

 IT infrastructure underpins the applications which run the business. It is formed of three components:

‐ Storage
‐ Servers
‐ And networking

 Provisioning of infrastructure to support new applications can be highly challenging and time consuming.
Storage, Networking and Servers are typically managed by separate teams and there may be a fourth
team for the applications. Due to the critical nature of these applications, the teams need to collaborate
and ensure all the components will work reliably with the application. Putting a new application into
production can take many months.
Network

Servers

Storage

Traditional Converged

 One way to speed up this provisioning cycle is to use a Converged Infrastructure.

 The difference is that ownership for validating the various components is taken on by the manufacturer
(or in some cases, some manufacturers working in partnership).

 This brings several benefits:

‐ The manufacturer can speed up deployment by providing validated designs for specific purposes. One
of the implications here is that solutions may be validated for a particular application – for example
Oracle or SAP. Another common validated solution is to provide a general-purpose infrastructure to
support a virtualized environment – for example using VMware or Microsoft. And a recent trend is to
support containerized software.
‐ Ongoing management of a converged infrastructure can be simplified by using advanced
management tools provided by the manufacturer. These can speed up processes by automating many
steps.
‐ Finally – a converged infrastructure can be wrapped up in a single support contract provided by the
manufacturer.
Network

Servers

Storage

Traditional Converged Hyperconverged

 Hyperconverged takes this packaging concept even further.

 If we look inside an industry standard server, we can see that on top of its compute capability, it can also
house disks (storage) and it has network connectivity (via network cards). However, as a standalone
unit, it has very limited ability to scale.

 This can be overcome by using virtualization software which encompasses compute and storage. This
enables a scale-out architecture in which a pool of storage and compute can be scaled simply by adding
boxes.

 Hyperconverged carries many of the advantages of converged systems including fast provisioning and
scaling, automated management tools and a single support contract. In addition, by using only industry
standard server components, it has the potential to be cheaper.

Converged Hyperconverged

 Hitachi Vantara can bring unique value to customers with our Converged and Hyperconverged solutions.

 A critical component in the portfolio is Hitachi Unified Compute Platform Advisor – or UCP Advisor for
short.

 This is a centralized management tool which spans our converged and hyperconverged solutions and
supports three main use cases.

‐ Increasing Infrastructure efficiency using automated workflows to assist with troubleshooting and
remediation.
‐ Data Center Simplification by providing a single management interface for process automation and
orchestration, across servers, storage and networking. For VMware, SAP and Oracle environments,
tight integration with these toolsets using adapters, makes management even simpler for operators to
learn.
‐ And Life-Cycle Management so new applications and services can be deployed faster, speeding time
to value.

 Hitachi Unified Compute Platform CI (for converged infrastructure) has a range of configurations which
are validated, built and supported by Hitachi Vantara and has the following benefits:

‐ Compute and storage can scale independently – leveraging VSP family storage.
‐ It supports business critical applications such as Oracle Database and SAP HANA.
‐ General purpose applications in virtualised environments are also supported with tight integration for
VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V which can be extended out to hybrid-cloud.
‐ A great use case for UCP CI is to provide the infrastructure for intelligent data
operations, powering analytics, AI and machine learning solutions.

 One of the unique advantages of Hitachi UCP solutions is that we can bridge the divide
between converged and hyperconverged. UCP CI can integrate Hitachi hyperconverged
nodes (UCP HC) this further breaks down infrastructure silos.

 Hitachi Unified Compute Platform HC (for hyperconverged) leverages VMware’s vSan

technology for storage virtualization and vSphere for server virtualization.

 It has the following benefits:

‐ Linear scaling from small to large solutions, leveraging virtualized commodity storage or
uniquely, can use VSP storage when connecting into UCP CI.
‐ Supports business critical applications with built-in data services and business
continuity features – as well as general purpose applications within a VMware
virtualised server environment.
‐ Packaging of the Hitachi Vantara and VMware HCI includes an appliance bundle that
allows you to quick quote and configure based upon a T-shirt sizing methodology of
Small, Medium and Large.

 Two more great use cases include:

‐ Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (or VDI).

‐ And Remote Office Back Office – providing the infrastructure for edge applications.

 For the ultimate in performance, there is an option for All NVMe – using ultra-fast
connectivity and Flash storage in combination.

 For the ultimate in software defined solutions, we have UCP RS (for Rack Scale).

 With this solution, we add VMware Cloud Foundation, vRealize and NSX.

‐ This solution can accommodate traditional and cloud native workloads – with the ability
to securely migrate and manage applications across on-premise and cloud.
‐ It exclusively uses scale-out storage which can be linearly scaled.
‐ And through software lifecycle management, is a great platform for developing new
applications, then seamlessly scaling into production.

 Its all very well storing and protecting data – the real challenge arises when customers want to start
using it as part of their data-driven initiatives.

 Data needs to be enriched and for several reasons. Some examples are:

‐ Making information easier to find. Let’s say we want to find all the pictures which feature Mary.
Without data enrichment, this would be impossible. In this case, we might want to “tag” the pictures
with people that appear in them. Now we can find pictures based on anyone who’s been tagged.
‐ Classification of data to make data management easier. Let’s say we have a large collection of data-
sheets and we want to restrict which audiences can access them. Tagging allows us to more easily
enforce restrictions. In this example – indicating which groups can access each file.
‐ Adding rules so data governance can be automated. With governance in mind, we might want to tag
documents with other classifications – for example “confidential” or “restricted”, or documents which
contain personally identifiable information. Or we can take this a stage further and add tags which can
enable automated governance policies – such as retention period. Note that tagging alone does not
achieve this – we also need a process which acts upon the tags.

 Collectively – these tags are called metadata.

 There are three distinct activities we need to consider if we want to start using metadata:

‐ The first is that we need a process for generating it. This can be a manual process – like the way
photos are tagged in Facebook, however, for most commercial applications – we will need to
automate this process.
‐ The second consideration is the mechanism for storing the metadata with the files so it
can be used.
‐ The third consideration is how this metadata is used – for example, an automated
process for restricting access to files based on classifications.

 Many Hitachi Vantara solutions can enrich and use metadata in a variety of ways.

‐ Pentaho works with structured and unstructured data – both of which can use metadata. “Metadata
Injection” is a Pentaho use case for ingesting data from multiple sources dynamically. It uses
metadata to help automate this process avoiding the need for perhaps hundreds of discrete
transformations.
‐ In our Smart Spaces portfolio, we can enrich video and LiDAR data, matching faces, detecting
objects, sensing queues and much more. These analytic outputs can be associated with the source
files in metadata so the information can be enacted upon. There are others too.

 In this module, we are going to stick with the theme of file data and introduce Hitachi Content Intelligence
or HCI.
Hitachi Content Intelligence
(HCI)

 HCI is content processing and workflow design software. It can connect to a wide variety of data
sources, be used to design and then execute series of processing steps called data pipelines, then send
outputs to a range of target data stores or follow-on processes.

 It can be used to enrich data by extracting information and putting descriptors into metadata. An example
might be processing text files and extracting useful search terms – or perhaps identifying personal
information like credit card numbers and classifying files appropriately. It can also be used to enact on
metadata – so helping to automate data management use cases.

 Top use cases are shown here including data classification, intelligent migration, data governance,
enterprise search and so on. It can also be used as a building block for accelerated development of data
management solutions by partners.

Cost Effective Storage Options

 Now that we have covered some ways to generate and use metadata – let’s focus on a unique platform
which is designed to store and manage data and its metadata. It’s called Hitachi Content Platform (or
HCP).

 It can be used in conjunction with all the examples we have highlighted including Pentaho, Smart
Spaces, Hitachi Content Intelligence and many more as well as third party software solutions such as
Veritas, Commvault and Star Storage. The reason for its compatibility with so many applications is the
open way in which it communicates. One of the most used protocols today is Amazon S3.

 At its heart – HCP is a feature rich object store.

‐ An object is the combination of a file plus its associated metadata. In HCP this is totally customizable.
It is highly scalable, self-healing and can be distributed across multiple locations.
‐ It is a unique solution when it comes to long term retention of data, especially in highly regulated
industries. This is because HCP storage is “immutable” – meaning users cannot delete or change files
once stored there. Governance policies can be automatically enacted such as retention period, file
version tracking and user activity logging.
‐ It is also a secure gateway to Public Cloud storage. This means the physical storage can be on media
owned by the organization (private cloud) or it can reside in one or more public clouds, or a mixture of
both with policies determining what classes of data are stored where.

 The traditional way is to feed processed data into dashboards, charts and reports. This is called data
visualization and it has become quite sophisticated. A challenge though, is this information is largely
created for the benefit of a few analysts and business leaders. It is also rear facing, because it is all
derived from historical information.

Insights

 Increasingly, insights need to be delivered to a much wider audience and at the point of need. This
means they need to be embedded in the applications which are used by workers day to day to improve
overall effectiveness. These insights also need to be forward thinking. Ultimately, providing guidance on
how to make better decisions which affect the future. This is enabled through advanced data modelling
coupled with machine learning and artificial intelligence.

 These two sets of requirements will continue in parallel.

Big Data

 The sharing of data to a wider audience, coupled with the demands of machine learning and AI is driving
the need to integrate a wider variety of data sources.

 So called Big Data includes machine generated data, social media feeds, internet of things, video and
many more. It is far more complex to derive insights from than traditional sources which are structured
and managed inside databases.

80% of effort
Data Prep

 And here is the challenge:

‐ Data Preparation – the ingestion, processing, blending and delivery of all data types is a highly
complex process and is estimated to consume up to 80% of the resources in an analytics project.

‐ Traditional data pipelines have been around for decades and are highly efficient at managing a small
number of structured data sources from applications which run the business such as ERP, CRM and
HR. However, they cope poorly with Big Data and do not have the agility to onboard new data
sources quickly.

 These challenges are being felt by business users who need faster access to insights and by the data
operations teams (data engineers and data scientists) who are trying to fulfil these demands. These then
are the primary targets from a sales perspective.

Pentaho Platform

Pentaho Data Integration (PDI) Analytics

 Pentaho is a software platform which is equally at home with traditional and Big Data pipelines.

 It can be sold in one of two packages:

‐ The first is Pentaho Platform which includes data integration as well as business analytics. Business
Analytics includes tools for data modelling and designing reports, dashboards and charts so data can
be visualized. Data visualizations can also be embedded into other applications.
‐ The second option is Pentaho Data Integration (or PDI) standalone. PDI is designed to dramatically
speed up data preparation – perhaps by 10 times. It does this using a drag and drop graphical user
interface to build data transformations and jobs with hundreds of built-in templates and the ability to
dynamically ingest new data sources. It can feed data into the customer’s existing visualization or
advanced analytics tools.

 Pentaho is open and embeddable which means it can be used to augment existing applications and help
provide insights to the right place at the right time.

 It uses a drag and drop graphical user interface which speeds up design, eliminates hand coding, and
visually documents pipeline designs to make project handoffs between engineers much simpler –
ultimately achieving a quicker time to value.

 It can automate various processes including ingestion of new data sources, machine learning
orchestration and working with new data processing engines without changing dataflow logic. These
dramatically reduce the data integration effort required and so costs.

 It is a modern, open-source accelerated architecture with a strong roadmap which offers great
investment protection for customers wishing to build a more intelligent data operations practice and so
gain a competitive edge.

Outcomes
 Data Monetization is about using insights from data to materially impact business outcomes – in other
words money made or money saved.

 So, there are two sides to this which are inextricably linked:

‐ The first is business outcomes. To offer effective help here, we will need to leverage industry domain
expertise. For example, to help a manufacturer we need manufacturing domain expertise. To help a
finance organization, we need the appropriate finance domain expertise. Sales teams have a growing
pool of expertise to collaborate with, courtesy of the wider Hitachi group.
‐ The second is our ability to “shine the light on data” and expose insights with our Lumada portfolio. It
includes a growing suite of enabling technologies and solutions which can help our customers
transform by using advanced analytics and intelligent operations to become data-driven.

 Let’s start with Video Insights which is part of our Smart Spaces portfolio.

 This is technology which can be used to provide insights about the physical world, like the movements of
people, to enable data-driven outcomes. For example, by analyzing video we can detect things such as:

‐ Numbers of people entering a store

‐ Queues forming
‐ Suspicious objects being left behind
‐ A person entering a protected zone
‐ Live face matching
‐ Tracking of an individual across multiple camera feeds

 The Smart Spaces portfolio is broader than just Video Insights – we will come back to this later.

Production Agility

 Manufacturing is something Hitachi knows a lot about.

 Manufacturing Insights was built through collaboration between Hitachi Vantara with its IT and advanced
analytics experience, and Hitachi in Japan with deep manufacturing domain knowledge and experience.

 Many organizations have siloed production systems which often include aging technology. This reduces
their ability to innovate and acts as a barrier to optimizing operations.

‐ There is immediate risk of falling behind the competition.

 Our solution can help gain real-time visibility of processes and equipment with a single view which can
span from individual machines out to multiple factories around the globe.

 Specifically, it can help in these three areas:

‐ Production Agility – real-time and granular process data can help improve production line agility. For
example, enabling multiple product variants on a single production line or rapid addition of new
products.
‐ Improved Quality – prescriptive analytics can assist line operators and managers to identify and react
to quality issues earlier in the process, avoiding expensive recalls, product compliance risks and
impacted profits.
‐ Production Efficiency – new insights from new data sources can help reduce downtime whilst
performance improvement targets become easier to reach.

 There is recognition that using data plus machine learning and AI to assist in decision making – on a
real-time basis for operators – can provide competitive advantage.

 Our industrial IoT solutions help critical operations be more predictable and manageable. We can run
customizable services at the edge, for example to collect and filter data, only sending what is needed to
the core. Here, we can run real-time analytics. These solutions provide building blocks which can be
used to accelerate the design and implementation of end-to-end operational processes.

 Today’s data operations are hampered by manual processes and data silos which puts IT in the front-
line, becoming a bottleneck, for delivering against new demands from the business.

 Lumada DataOps solutions can modernize data operations. These will be more automated, collaborative
(working across silos and stakeholders) and designed for the edge to core to multi-cloud environment.

 Data Integration and Analytics for all data types is provided through Pentaho.

 Data Catalog uses AI and patented “finger printing” technology to rapidly find then tag data with business
terms so it can be classified, governed and ultimately be put to better use. It also improves the
trustworthiness of data by exposing its lineage, where it came from, and scoring it for data quality.

 And finally, Data Optimizer for Hadoop is used to seamlessly tier data across Hadoop and Object
Storage like Hitachi’s Content Platform with the aim of reducing costs whilst maintaining analytics
capabilities.

 And video is not the only sensing technology we can use. For example, LiDAR, shown here on the left,
can be used to form a 3D representation of a physical space.

 By applying sophisticated analytics and feeding a data visualization tool (for example as shown), this can
provide insights based on say dwell times in a queue or around a specific place in a store, or heat maps
showing heavily used walkways in a stadium which might become bottlenecks and potential safety
hazards.

 Thanks to our consulting and development capabilities, we can even create custom solutions.

XaaS Agility

Simplification

 Everything as a service, X as a Service (or sometimes “zaahss”) is a trend which is accelerating in the
market. These are offered along with flexible financing options through Hitachi EverFlex.

 Whenever a solution need arises, organizations are faced with a basic “build” or “buy” decision. XaaS
adds a new option which is to subscribe to a service. This model can apply to software, infrastructure
and platforms.

 There are three reasons why this approach is proving so popular:

‐ The first is time to value – hungry to drive new efficiencies or new revenue streams – XaaS often
provides the quickest route to delivering business outcomes.
‐ The second is agility – XaaS can be an enabler for DevOps projects to move from concept to
production. The ability to ramp services up and down as needed means a faster response to the
market and more ability to change direction if needed.
‐ The third is simplification – many solutions require an underlying level of technical and domain
expertise. In the case of XaaS, much of this can be taken on by the service provider. This leaves the
customer to focus on the desired outcomes and not get tied up in the technology.

 Hitachi Vantara has several XaaS offerings.

 The first three of these relate to our digital infrastructure solutions:

‐ Virtual Storage as a service is a predictable consumption-based pricing offering. It is designed to be

delivered to the customer by our partners with a full-service web console to allow for agile usage
across defined pricing thresholds of storage. This means customers only pay for the storage they use.
‐ Data protection as a service – customers pay for data protection only as they use it and can leverage
our unique data protection and copy data management technologies.
‐ And Smart Data Center which provides advanced data center analytics combined with Hitachi Vantara
best practices to deliver high levels of IT automation.
‐ Additional custom solutions are available through Hitachi Vantara’s Unified Data Managed solutions
team or UDM.

This delivers a self-service environment which spans private and public cloud.

 Many customers are using at least one public cloud meaning that services which can help bridge the gap
between on-premise and public cloud are of high value. Hitachi Enterprise Cloud is an example of this
which includes an infrastructure component as well as services.

 We also have cloud service offerings which use technology and expertise gained from Hitachi’s
acquisition of REAN Cloud. These include Cloud Accelerator Platform, Cloud Migration Services, Cloud
Operations Services and Application Modernization Services. These can help customers optimize their
applications for a multi-cloud environment, speeding migration by automating whilst maintaining security.

 And finally, Data Services Hub.

 The Data Stairway to Value is a simple model which can be used to guide a customer conversation and
is also a useful framework for talking through our solutions portfolio.

 We can add value to our customers across every step. At the bottom, the value we provide is more
operational – such as 100% data availability and lower cost of ownership. Towards the top right, returns
on data will be more transformational such as driving new revenue streams or revolutionizing their
customers’ experience.

 Engagement can start at any level. This may well be driven by the contacts you have relationships with.
