Solid Waste Management Report

NECESSITY AND IMPORTANCE:

College students, staff, and faculty often lead busy lives and value convenience;
as they go about their day rushing between activities and classes, the purchase of
single-use products is often the most convenient choice. The consequence of this
convenience comes in the form of high quantities of waste. In an era where
societies around the world are becoming more conscious of the issues
surrounding waste, students, faculty, and staff must be properly educated on
proper waste management practices.
Although the introduction of more recycling bins on campus may help increase recycling rates, a study
noted that any recycling or waste management system depends not only on technical factors and
availability, but also the motivation of the users to participate in the process. It can be understood that
waste management education is essential in reducing waste, increasing diversion rates and encouraging
environmentally friendly behavior.
ABOUT INSTITUTE:

The KDK Group of Institutes, including KDK College of engineering, is located on a beautiful campus of
16 acres. The college main building is on the bank of the Nag River. The whole campus is divided in five
blocks namely A,B,C,D and E blocks . The college has also adopted the ‘Green Campus’ system for
environmental conservation and sustainability. There are main three pillars i.e. zero environmental foot
print, positive impact on occupant health and performance and 100% graduates demonstrating
environmental literacy. The goal is to reduce CO2 emission, energy and water use, while creating an
atmosphere where students can learn and be healthy. The college administration works on the several
facets of ‘Green Campus’ including Water Conservation, Tree Plantation, Waste Management, Paperless
Work, and Alternative Energy.
OBJECTIVES :

The main objective of the solid waste management system in the campus is to promote the Environment
Management and Conservation in the College Campus. The purpose of the current available system is
• To identify, quantify, describe and prioritize framework of Environment Sustainability in
compliance with the applicable regulations, policies and standards.
• To introduce and aware students to real concerns of environment and its sustainability
• To secure the environment and cut down the threats posed to human health by analyzing the
pattern and extent of resource use on the campus.
• To establish a baseline data to assess future sustainability by avoiding the interruptions in
environment that are more difficult to handle and their corrections requires high cost.
• To bring out a status report on environmental compliance.
CONTEXT:

1) Toilet blocks of all the campus are connected to sewage line network of the campus. The line is
connected to Nagpur Municipal Corporation Main sewage line which goes to Bhandewadi
Sewage treatment plant where treated water is diverted to Nag River.
2) Institute is paying “ Mal Gal Kar “ Tax to Nagpur Municipal Corporation every year for
providing waste disposal facility
3)Kanak Resource management (agency hired by Municipal Corporation) lift the solid waste from
canteens and hostels on daily basis which is then converted to green energy forms ( biogas and
manure)
4) Institute is also planning to utilize all the kitchen waste for production of biogas in the campus
itself and biogas plant for the same is under construction.
5) Institute has applied the NO PLASTIC POLICY for project report submissions to minimize the
plastic waste.
6) All the used and waste papers are sent for recycling to vendor who supplies low cost (made of
recycled papers) copies for students.
7) Single side used papers are reused for writing and printing in all departments. Important and
confidential reports/ papers are sent for pulping and recycling after completion of their preservation
period.

METHODOLOGY: The diagram indicates the strategy of institute in above context.

.
Various methods adopted for solid waste disposals are

• Sanitary landfilling
• Composting
• Incineration
• Pyrolysis
• Recycling
From above methods composting and the recycling are the methods adopted by the institute.
IMPLEMENTATION:

The total solid waste collected in the campus is 50 Kg/day. Waste generation from tree droppings, lawn
management and kitchen waste, are major solid wastes generated in the campus. However, it also
includes papers and bottles which is segregated at source by providing separate dustbins for Bio-
degradable and Plastic waste. The capacity of dustbin is 20 kg. Total population of campus is estimated
as 3000 including student and staff. As per institutional need per capita water demand is supposed to be
45 lit/day, accordingly the total liquid waste generated is 0.135 MLD. The sewer carrying the liquid
waste is designed by the experts with all proper provisions along with ventilation and manholes. Sewers
are then connected with the main sewer of municipal corporation which convey the sewerage to
Bhandewadi waste treatment plant.

2. No pollution of nearby natural water body.

3. Minimum plastic waste by NO PLASTIC POLICY.
4. Full compliance with environmental policies of corporation (government).
