I. Introduction
The Rizal Shrine, also known as Dambanang Rizal sa Calamba, is a reconstruction of the
original two-story stone and hardwood structure ancestral house of Jose Rizal. The Spanish-
Colonial style house is located in the heart of the City of Calamba, Laguna, where our national
hero was born. The replica features the elements of the traditional bahay na bato where the lower
part is constructed with lime and stone and the upper part is built with the best hardwood. The
house is also constructed with red tile roof and wide capiz shell windows.
In addition, the shrine also features the following: The famous deep/wishing well; A nipa
hut where young Jose Rizal used to play; Fruit trees such as atis, santol, tampoy, makopa, plum,
balimbing, and kasuy; And a museum which has six galleries featuring Rizal’s early education,
his travels abroad, and nationalist undertakings in Europe.
This study aims to propose a lighting design plan for the national heritage site in the City
of Calamba in order to showcase and promote the said features as well as the Philippines’
historical, cultural, and architectural importance.
Placement of lightings in an historic structure gives character and value. With proper
illumination, unique elements can be showcased, hence increasing aesthetic quality. Moreover,
according to Decorative Elves Inc., outdoor architectural lighting gives safety and security features
that make the building attractive, well-protected, and safer for employees and tourists on location
at night. Architectural outdoor lighting also gives comfort and a sense of accommodation for every
individuals. For this reason, our team will be proposing various lighting application for every critical
part of the Rizal Shrine.
B. Landscape Lighting
The backyard landscape disappears into the darkness during night time. According
to Lehman, “By lighting the landscaping that is integrated into an architecture — the
building will sit nestled on its site. Lighting allows for an architectural site’s primary features
to be “pulled” from the darkness to work together with the architecture.”
To emphasize the shrine’s facade which highlights the stone walls and the capiz
shell windows the following lighting treatments are used:
C-1. Wall Washers
The aim of this study is to propose a lighting design plan for the national heritage site,
The Rizal Shrine, located in the City of Calamba in order to showcase and promote the
Philippines’ historical, cultural, and visual importance.
So we considered architectural navigation lightings such as ground lights and step linear
lights as it provides for the safety, experience, and a sense of accommodation for every
individuals. Landscape lightings such as LED outdoor beam, post lighting, and tree shedding
light that will bring out the beauty of the site. As it focuses on objects that would disappear in
plain sight at nighttime. Then, architecture emphasis lighting such as wall washers, LED lighting
strips, wall sconces, and recessed floor luminaire to emphasize the shrine’s facade which
highlights the stone walls and the capiz shell windows.
Mostly of the proposed light layout plan, the lighting treatment used in the site
development to emphasize its features, not only the building but also the landscape as it plays
along the path walk and nature. As designers we focused on balancing the sustainability of the
design with its technical sustainability by fully expanding the variety of the design's historical,
aesthetics and functional needs.
