I. Objectives

During the learning engagement, students are expected to:

1. Identify and correct errors in subject-verb agreement;


2. Choose the correct form of the verb to make it agree with the subject; and
3. Reflect on the importance of using correct subject-verb agreement in daily
conversations and in written texts.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Rules on Subject-Verb Agreement


Reference: English 7 Learning Plan (pages 27-32)
Materials: Chalkboard

III. Methodology

A. Activities

1. Prayer and checking of attendance


2. Motivation
 Present a short paragraph which contains sentences with common errors in
subject-verb agreement.
 Require the students to study if the sentences in the paragraph were written
correctly.
 Elicit from the students their observations, with particular focus on the
subjects and verbs of the sentences.
 Present the version of the paragraph that shows grammatically correct
sentences.

3. Presentation
 Discuss the rules on subject-verb agreement.
 Have the students make generalizations concerning the following rules of
subject-verb agreement:
o a/the number
o there is, there are
o intervening words, phrases, and clauses
 with, together with, including, accompanied by, in addition
to, or as well
 prepositional phrase
 relative clause
4. Analysis
 Open the class for queries and clarification
 If all are clarified, ask the following question:
o Why is it important to use correct subject-verb agreement in daily
conversations?
5. Abstraction
 Ask the students the following questions:
o Ask students about what would happen if the subject and verb
didn’t agree.
o Give some examples of incorrect sentences (e.g. The dogs chases
the cat)
o Explain that subject-verb agreement is important because without it
a sentence can be confusing. To communicate clearly in English,
we must follow rules like this one.

IV. Evaluation

Underline the correct verb form.

1. The men in the factory (work, works) long hours.


2. One of the delegates (is, are) late.
3. Champorado and dilis (is, are) a delectable breakfast.
4. The sound of the insects (was, were) fascinating.
5. He (seem, seems) eager to do the work.
6. Either these magazines or that book (include, includes) information for your report.
7. My uncle with his two guests (has, have) arrived.
8. Measles (has, have) kept many students out of school.
9. Poets (expresses, express) their ideas in verse.
