ANSWERS TO WEEK 10 -ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

1.) Collect and attach a picture for each classification of solid waste.
2.) In the picture attached. Explain why each is classified under it. Make two sentences.

a.) MUNICIPAL WASTE

Frequently used goods like product packaging, grass clippings, furniture, clothing, bottles, food
scraps, newspapers, appliances, paint, and batteries are included in municipal solid waste
sometimes known as trash or garbage. This is produced in our residences.

b.) HOSPITAL WASTE

This waste category includes bodily fluids, human fluids, tissue, blood, body parts, and
contaminated animal carcasses. All vaccines and medications that are unused, out-of-date, or
tainted fall into this category, for addition, antibiotics, injectables, and tablets are also included.
c.) HAZARDOUS WASTE

Cleaning solvents, used acids and bases, metal finishing wastes, painting wastes, sludge from
air and water pollution control units, and many more abandoned items are examples of waste
that is frequently dangerous. In addition to abandoned home items like paint thinner, cleaning
solutions, and outdated batteries, hazardous wastes can also contain things like chemicals,
heavy metals, or substances produced as byproducts during commercial production processes.

d.) AGRICULTURAL WASTE

Waste generated as a result of various agricultural processes is referred to as agricultural

waste. It comprises garbage from farms, slaughterhouses, and poultry houses as well as waste
from harvesting operations, fertilizer runoff from fields, pesticides that end up in water, the
atmosphere, or soils, and salt and silt that has been drained from fields.
3.) Give the color coded bins for solid wastes and itemize the waste for colored bin. Give 4
for each.
a.) BLUE BIN
● Cardboard
● Food tins
● Glass bottles
● Tetra pack packaging
b.) RED BIN
■ Polystyrene
■ Sticky tapes
■ Cling wrap
■ Glazed wrappers
c.) GREEN BIN
■ Vegetables
■ Eggshells
■ Coffee grounds
■ Newspapers
d.) GREY BIN
■ Shredded papers
■ Mixed glass and jars
■ Envelopes
■ Junk mail

4.) Among the waste management, which do you consider the best for:

a.) Organic Waste

○ > Composting is the best waste management for organic waste, as it is a
controlled procedure that uses microorganisms that are naturally present in soil
and organic debris to break down organic material. Water, oxygen, and basic
nutrients are needed by these microbes for rapid decomposition to take place.
b.) Inorganic Waste
○ > Inorganic wastes may be effectively managed through recycling since they are
frequently cut and cleaned to remove impurities. In order to create garbage bags,
pilings, fences, road signs, roofing materials, and many other goods, they are
then dried, melted, and molded into pellets.
