1. The ovaries of females during their reproductive age produce eggs. One of the two
ovaries release an egg or ovum every 28 – 30 days. This process is called as
ovulation. The reproductive age is between menarche and menopause.
2. The walls of the uterus become thick and cushiony during these 28 -30 days to
receive the egg. If the egg is fertilized then it begins to develop in the uterus.
3. If fertilization does not occur, the egg is shed along with the lining of uterus. This
results in bleeding that lasts for 4-6 days and is known as Menstruation.
4. The cycle of producing and releasing a mature egg, the thickening of the uterus wall
and its shedding if fertilization does not occur is known as the menstrual cycle. The
cycle repeats after every 28-30 days.
