Using your Inventory File Template

This page contains information you need to create, validate and upload your inventory file to Amazon
recommend that you print this page so you can refer to it as you go.
Save a copy of this file as an Excel worksheet on your hard drive. Then proceed to enter your produc
data into the Template tab, using the guidelines below.
Data Definitions Tab
The Data Definitions tab contains the acceptable values that can be used as you fill out the Template
We recommend printing the Data Definitions sheet for reference.
The Data Definitions tab also indicates whether a field is Required, Preferred or Optional:
Required: Required fields are the minimum values necessary to create your product in the Amazon
catalog. Required columns have bold headings in the template. Failure to enter a valid value in a req
field will prevent your product from being added to the catalog. Other data may be required as well,
depending on the values you enter elsewhere. (For example, you must provide a sale date if you pro
a sale price.)
Preferred: Preferred fields give customers the basic information they need to make an informed
purchasing decision. We recommend that you provide product data for all fields in the Preferred colum
Not providing this data can result in inadequate product descriptions or make it difficult for customer
find your listing. For example, you can create a page in the catalog for your product without providin
Price and Quantity, but your offer for it will not appear on the site until you provide that data.
Optional: Optional fields give customers product information that is useful, but not critical, when ma
purchasing decisions. We recommend that you provide as much Optional product data as possible for
product. In some cases, fields we have labeled Optional may be important to your product or busines
required per your seller agreement.
Valid Values and BTGs

As indicated in the Data Definitions tab, some fields require that you use terms from the Valid Values
These terms are specific to the product attribute and are used for product discoverability and
categorization.
Some cells require that you use valid codes from the Browse Tree Guide (BTG). The BTG is a separat
Excel file that can be downloaded from seller Help. BTGs are category-specific and contain the rules t
Amazon uses to assign products to categories on our site. In it you will find mappings between brows
nodes and Amazon's controlled terms which allow products to surface in those categories. In the BTG
your category, find the category most appropriate for your product, then use the corresponding quer
determine what field and value you need to put in your template to place your product in that catego
Image Tab
Refer to the Image Info tab for Amazon’s image standards. Images you upload to Amazon must con
to these standards.
Example Tab
See the Example tab for an example on how to enter product information. This information is for
reference only. In order to avoid including invalid product data in your inventory file, do not work on
own items within the Example sheet.
Template Tab
The Template tab contains the template from which you will create an inventory file. Column headers
bold indicate required data. For best results, also submit as much preferred and optional data as pos
for your products. If you are not providing data for a particular field, leave the cell blank. Feel free t
color, bold, borders and other formatting (not additional text) to the template if it is helpful to you. P
note that high ASCII characters (such as ®, ©) and HTML tags are not allowed.
Validation Macros
This template may contain validation macros that will help you to complete the template correctly. If
present in your template, these macros may be turned on or off at your discretion, but we urge you t
keep them enabled at least the first few times you create and upload your inventory file.
Helpful hints for using the validation macros:
Enabling the macros: If you disabled the macros when you opened this file, you will need to close
file and open it again to enable them. You can do this two different ways:
Option 1 (recommended): Reopen the file and check “Always trust macros from this source” in the
security warning that appears. Next, select “Enable Macros.” This will enable the macros each time
access the file.
Option 2: Before you open the file again, set your security level for Excel to low. In Excel, from the T
menu, choose Macro > Security, and select “Low” on the Security Level tab.
Drop-down menus: Some fields have dropdown menus with lists of valid values to choose from. Fo
some of these fields, you must select a value from the drop-down menu. You cannot type in your ow
value, even if it is valid. If you receive an error, delete the existing value and choose an alternative
the drop-down menu.
Other fields have dropdown menus with values that are suggested but not required. You can type in
own value if you wish. If the value you enter is not valid for that field, it will cause a validation warni
when you validate your data.
To make a dropdown disappear, press Escape; press Escape again to make it reappear.
Amazon.com Toolbar: This “floating” toolbar appears when the macros are enabled. It provides qu
access to Seller Central, a Validate option, and a toggle button for turning the validations on or off. T
Validate button allows you to run a validation on the data that has been entered into the template. T
feature works regardless of whether the validations are on or off. If you close the Amazon.com Toolb
can be reopened; for more information, please see Excel Help for working with toolbars.
.log File: The macros create a .log file of errors and warnings in the same location as your Product
Template. The warnings will indicate which cells still require an entry. The errors are macro failures.
can delete this .log file once you have successfully uploaded your inventory file.
Importing data: If you have data in an Excel file that is in another format (such as with different fie
names in a different order), you can use the Import button on the Amazon.com toolbar to import it in
this template. Data in columns with headers that are exactly the same will be matched automatically
regardless of where they appear in the imported file. You will be given the opportunity to manually m
headers that are not the same.
Save your Inventory File
When you have finished entering your product data into the Template tab, save the Template tab (on
as a Text (tab-delimited) (*.txt) file. (For the China Marketplace, save as Unicode Text (*.txt).)
This is your inventory file that you will upload via the Upload Products & Inventory tool in your seller
account.
Validate and Upload your Inventory File
Validate your data and upload your file to Amazon at the same time by clicking the “Upload file” butt
the Amazon.com toolbar.
Before your offers are uploaded to the site, our system will automatically validate your data. Data tha
fails validation will be outlined in red in your file and an explanation will appear in the cell comment.

Any errors in the upload will appear in a Processing Report. This report can be downloaded from the
"Review File Status and History" section of the Upload Products & Inventory page in your seller accou
You can also run validation without uploading the file by clicking the Validate button on the Amazon.c
toolbar. Making a change to a cell will automatically remove that cell's red border and cell comment.
Note: We recommend first uploading 15 or fewer products for testing purposes. You can upload the r
of your inventory once you have completed a successful test.
Updated Templates
When Amazon.com updates valid values, data validation rules, or explanatory text for the data valida
cell comments, you can get the updated template by clicking the Update Template button on the
Amazon.com toolbar. (You will need Internet access.) When done, you should see the new valid valu
the drop-down menus, and any new data validation rules will be applied the next time you validate y
data.

Image Standards
Every product on Amazon needs one or more product images. Choose images that are clear,
straightforward, and easy to understand. They must accurately represent the product and be
information-rich and attractively presented. Show only the product that is being offered for sale, with
minimal or no propping. Text, logos, and inset images are not allowed. Whenever possible, provide
several images, with each one showing different angles and details of the product. This is your
opportunity to show your product to your customer, so quality matters.
We reserve the right to reject images that do not meet our image standards.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have all necessary rights to the images you submit.
MAIN Images
*The background for a MAIN image must be pure white (pure white blends in with the Amazon search
and item detail pages, which have RGB values of 255,255,255).
*A MAIN image must not be a graphic or illustration and must not contain accessories that are not
being dispatched with the product, props that may confuse the customer, text that is not part of the
product, or any logos, watermarks or inset images.
*The product must fill 85% or more of the image.
Additional Images
*MAIN images should be supplemented with additional images showing different sides of a product,
the product in use, or details that are not visible in the MAIN image. For media products, this could
include the back cover, sample pages, or screenshots. You can add up to eight (8) images.
*A white background is recommended, but not required. Additional images may not include logos or
watermarks, and all props or accessories must be presented in a way that will not cause customer
confusion.
Image Size
Images should be 1000 pixels or more in either height or width as this will enable the zoom function on
the website (zoom has been proven to enhance sales). Files measuring less than 500 pixels on the
longest side will be rejected by our system.
Naming and formatting
*Amazon accepts JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), or GIF (.gif) file formats (JPEG files are preferred as they are
smaller in size and can therefore be processed and uploaded more quickly).
*A suggested way to name an image file is to save the image on your web server using the product SKU
as the file name followed by the view type or variant code--MAIN, PT01-PT08 (additional images),
SWCH (usually a color swatch only used on products with more than one variation). Examples:

Uploading your Image files

Once you have named the file and saved it to your web server, enter the URL of the image file in the
appropriate cell of your product template.

Definition and Use

A unique identifier for the product, assigned by the

merchant. The SKU must be unique for each product
listed. After you have established a SKU for a product,
please do not change it without first deleting the original
SKU from our systems through a delete feed.
A short title for the product. This will be displayed in

bold on the product page and in the title bar of the
browser window.
Note: Please *ONLY* include size and color information

in child sku titles. Parent sku titles should never contain
size or color information as they represent the entire sku
family, not any specfic size or color.
A standard, alphanumeric string that uniquely identifies

the product. This could be a GCID (16 alphanumeric
characters), UPC or EAN. This is a required field if
product_id_type is provided.
The type of standard, unique identifier entered in the
Product ID field. This is a required field if Product ID is
provided.
The brand of the product.
A text description of the product. If you see #### signs

where you should see the text, clear the format of the
cell. This can be done by clicking Edit in main menu,
select Clear & then Formats.
A category that best describes the class of product.
If applicable, please submit the style number for the

product. For most products, this will be the
manufacturer's unique number that identifies the
product; may also be referred to as model number. Style
number will be required if you are using Global Catalog
ID (GCID) as your source for product-id
Specifies the type of operation (Update, PartialUpdate or
Delete) to be done on the data provided. If left blank,
the default behavior is "Update." Use "Update"
whenever you are changing any field in the existing
product's information, including reducing the inventory
to 0. Only use "Delete" when you wish to remove a
product completely and permanently from the catalog.
After you have established a SKU for a product, please

do not try changing it without first deleting the
associated product from our systems through a delete
feed.

A price greater than 0. Do not include thousands
separators or currency symbols.
Manufacturer's suggested retail price or list price for the
product. This is not the same as the offering price, which
is specified in the item-price field.
Amazon.com's standard code to identify the tax
properties of a product.
Indicates the time, in days, between when you receive

an order for an item and when you can ship the item.
The default leadtime-to-ship is one to two business days.
Use this field if your leadtime-to-ship is greater than two
business days.
Specify the Date for when this item can launch on the
site (this applies only to you product uploads after you
have launched). For upload and testing purposes, set
this date to a date at one year into the future. When
you perform the final upload, use previous day's date.
The first date on which you can deliver a pre-orderable
product (one that has never been available prior to this
date) to a customer.
This is the date that a merchant will be able to ship any
back-ordered items to a customer.
Merchant-fulfilled products: Enter the quantity of the

item you are making available for sale. This is your
current INVENTORY commitment. Quantity is required
for all "child" or stand-alone items. If left blank when
first submitting the product information, the item will be
displayed as "Out of stock." Do not enter quantity for
parent items.
Amazon-fulfilled products: Do not enter quantity, as it is
not applicable for products fulfilled by Amazon. Instead,
submit fulfillment_center_id in a separate column (see
data definition for details).
The sale price at which the merchant offers the product
for sale, expressed in local currency. The site will
strikethrough the product's standard_price and indicate
that the item is on sale at the sale price.
The date that the sale price will begin to override the
product's standard_price.
The last date that the sale price will override the item's
normal price; the product's standard_price will be
displayed afterwards.
Indicates the maximum number of these same items
that can be shipped together in the same package.
Number of products included in an ASIN. This specifically

refers to what typically is referred to as an "each" or unit
of sale.
Examples:
1 bag of 8pk socks: item-package-quantity = 1
5 Bags of 8pk Socks: item-package-quantity = 5
If you can print a gift message with the item indicate that
here. If left blank, defaults to 'false'.
If you can gift wrap an item indicate that here. If left
blank, defaults to 'false'.
Indicates whether the manufacturer has stopped making
the item.
Sellers can create a set of ship configurations based on

business needs and use cases. The ship configurations
can be region based and have rules to set SLA and rate
for the region. When listing product to create offer,
seller needs to select one ship configuration for the
product. The ship configuration will be used to retrieve
the valid ship options on the website.

The weight of the product when packaged to ship. This is
displayed on the product page and used to calculate
shipping costs for weight-based shipping, if available.
The unit of measure used to describe the weight of the

product when packaged to ship, expressed in grams or
kilograms.

Amazon will automatically have the item's title and
brand in the search index, these additional search terms
help locating the product when customers perform
keyword searches on our site. It is in your best interest
to make use of these additional search terms.

The URL where a main image of the product is located.

It's important that this is supplied for all products.
The URL for additional images of your product.
These images will be shown on the detail page when the

customer clicks through to see other views associated
with the product. For example, you can use this field to
show the label information or packaging of your product.
Upload additional images with different views to the
item, or with some emotional surrounding as additional
image.
The URL where an image of a color swatch from the

product is located.
-related information for either Amazon-fulfilled (FBA) or seller-fulfilled orders.
Amazon-fulfilled products: For those merchants using

Amazon fulfillment services, this designates which
fulfillment network will be used. Specifying a value other
than ‘DEFAULT’ for fulfillment_center_id will cancel the
Merchant-fulfilled offering. Resubmitting with a blank or
‘DEFAULT’ value for the fulfillment_center_id, along with
quantity, will switch the item back to Merchant-fulfilled.
Merchant-fulfilled products: Do not enter
fulfillment_center_id, as it is not applicable.
The height measurement of the package. If you are an

FBA seller and are using a non-default value for
fulfillment_center_id, package height is required and
must be populated.
The width measurement of the package. If you are an

fulfillment_center_id, package width is required and
must be populated.
The length measurement of the package. If you are an

fulfillment_center_id, package length is required and
must be populated.
The unit of measure used to describe the dimensions

(width, length, height) of the package expressed in
inches, centimeters, or feet. Required if package
dimensions are provided.
The weight of the package.

Parent products are not purchasable; the "parent"
product simply specifies the attributes of the product

This field is required if any of the following columns are

populated: variation_theme, color, paper_size,
maximum_expandable_size, line_size. If the product
does not participate in a variation relationship, use the
value "child."
For further information about how to construct a

product variation, please refer to this template's
"Example" tab.
If the product is a child product, list the SKU of the
parent product which is related. DO NOT FILL IN THIS
FIELD FOR PARENT PRODUCTS.
Describes the relationship between products that are
related.
Describes the parameter(s) by which the parent product

may vary. The value input for this field should be the
same for both the parent and child SKUs. Example: If the
product varies by size, input the value Size. If the
product varies by color, input the value Color. Terms
used for variation themes are created by you the
merchant. (e.g. 'count' can be any number that you
choose).

Complete only if Import Designation is “Imported.”

Select country shown on product label (i.e., if label says
“Made in China,” select China). If some products under
this ASIN are made in a different country than others, do
not complete this field.
If product contains real fur, include fur origin country.

Also note if the fur is dyed/colored or if the fur is used,
damaged, or contains paws, bellies, tails or waste.
Correct: “Natural rabbit fur (Korea)/Dyed lamb shearling
(China).” Do not use “haircalf” as a description.
Describes the pattern on shoes.
