Program Notes
Stanislao Mattei (stah-nee-SLA-o mah-TEH-ee), born in 1750, a native and lifelong resident of
Bologna, Italy, was a student and friend of Padre Martini, in whose footsteps he followed by entering
the Franciscan order of Friars Minor Conventual. In 1776 Mattei became substitute and successor to
Padre Martini at Basilica di San Francesco in Bologna, inheriting the position of Maestro di Cappella
in 1784 upon the death of Martini. In 1789 Mattei assumed the same position at Basilica di San
Petronio, after which he was accepted as a member of the famed Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna.
As professor at the newly founded musical conservatory in 1804, Mattei counted among his students
Rossini and Donizetti. He died in 1825.
Stanislao Mattei’s Beatus Vir (Psalm 112), for SATB chorus, 2 oboes, 2 horns in A, 2 violins, viola, cello,
bass and continuo, was composed in 1823 for the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna. This edition is
based upon a hand-copied score (OO.175) located in the library of Museo Internazionale e Biblioteca
della Musica di Bologna in Bologna, Italy. The manuscripts are housed at the Conservatorio di Musica
“G.B. Martini”. The title page of the manuscript reads Beatus Vir/ a 4o/ F.S. Mattei/ 1823/ f#/ Partitura
ms. The hand-copied score is laid out over seventeen pages, with eleven staves per page.
The present edition adheres closely to the above-mentioned source, noting editorial markings in
parentheses. Voice parts, notated in moveable clefs, were rewritten in treble clef; where text was indi-
cated in only one voice part, the text has been written out in full; repeated text, indicated only in one
voice part, was written out in full; phrase markings were added in the voice parts where two or more
notes occur for a single syllable of text; the piano reduction was prepared from the orchestral material.
This editor is indebted to Museo Internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica di Bologna, as well as the
staff of the library of Conservatorio di Musica “G.B. Martini” for allowing me to examine the original
source material as well as granting permission to publish this modern performing edition.
