Many people believe that social platforms and the online world are of more
importance than the reality in cultural identity development. However, I do
believe that real life also plays a crucial part in it. To begin with, the virtual world is important in developing culture among the younger generation. As young people nowadays spend a large proportion of time online, everything is impacted such as fashion, opinions, beliefs, hobbies and interests. For instance, when posting on social media, young people can try out personalities that differ from those they have in the real world. Furthermore, E-learning which mixes students from all over the world is becoming increasingly popular among young people. This can result in better integration and the youth can learn others’ different cultures which affect theirs. What’s more, since more and more young people in the world are becoming obsessed with online gaming, this facilitates safe integration into different scenarios and experiences of different cultures. In spite of all the things above, the real world is still important in the construction of young people’s cultural identity. Language is regarded as the primary source of identifying with culture and a person’s mother tongue is influenced in their formative years. As a result, upbringing is still the sole factor in determining cultural identity. To summarize, although social media plays a crucial part in developing culture because of the large proportion of time online, E-learning, Online gaming, the real life is still important owing to the person’s language.
