For my analysis, I chose three academic directions:
• Sociology
• Cellular and molecular biotechnology
• Design
Design:
The training program allows students to gain fundamental knowledge, relevant skills and
a sought-after profession. There are many profiles: communication design, animation
and illustration, visual effects, environment design, interior design, design and
programming, digital product design and promotion, design and contemporary art,
game design and virtual reality, theatre and cinema artist, media and design, comics,
design and advertising, allowing students to develop in areas that attract them, that
they are interested in. Graduates of this program contribute products from various fields
to society: architecture, fashion, online game development, animation projects, interior
design, programming, contemporary art, performances, media.
In searching for information about these areas, I used the HSE educational portals,
media news channels and articles about HSE students and graduates.
▪ What does the field explore? (Talk about the science in a way that not only the
experts but also your friends will understand)
Students can choose any sphere of human life and study it within the framework of course
and project activities. If we talk about the subjects studied, then these are both basic
sociological theories, the foundations of psychology, philosophy, and the study of sociology
in various fields, for example, economic sociology, sociology of consumption, medicine, and
so on. Sociology also includes knowledge of several programming languages that allow you
to analyse large amounts of information for further research. Sociology is the science of
analysing data related to human life in society.
▪ Where does this field research at the Higher School of Economics? (List the
laboratories and research groups.)
There are several scientific groups:
▪ With whom can you do research in this field? (Tell us about your interactions with
students/staff who have helped you)
Yulia explained that she did not work in any of the laboratories, but she knows several
people who are closely connected with them. According to her, the laboratories allow
working with both HSE staff and students to conduct any research.
▪ How can you share your results with the world? (Tell us about the thematic
conferences of Vyshka, scientific journals, sci-fi projects, etc.)
Every spring, the Yasin (Ясинскую) Conference is held, and the R&D (НИРС)(competition of
students' research papers) is also held. Moreover, there is the journal "Economic Sociology"
and the competition of research and design works "Aerobatics"(Высший пилотаж). At the
same time, the book is published: Radaev V.V. Teaching in crisis. — M.: Publishing House of
the Higher School of Economics, 2022. — 200 p. So we can see that LESI (ЛЕСИ) (Laboratory
of Economic and Sociological Research) helps in the promotion of research and works.
▪ How can you develop in this direction? (Look for options for academic mobility,
research assistantships, summer schools, etc.)
According to Julia's narration, several of her classmates flew under the academic mobility
program. Moreover, LESI (ЛЕСИ) (Laboratory of Economic and Sociological Research)
conducts a lecture every week and this year will host the eighth summer school "Economic
Sociology: Turning Points". At the same time, you can go to work as an assistant to a teacher
in the subject that you are interested in and you have a good grade on it. Yulia said that she
worked as a teaching assistant on the course "Data Visualization in PowerPoint". This
experience helped her to develop the skill of communicating with students, with a teacher,
taught her how to give feedback correctly, helped her to develop her vision and further
develop in this direction independently.
