IRGAMET® 42 Water soluble metal deactivator

Typical chemical and IRGAMET 42 is a liquid, water / glycol soluble, tolutriazole derivative which acts as a
physical properties metal deactivator

Applications and All types of water based fluids,when used at 0.1 - 0.3%
typical treat levels with pH > 7, such as :
recommended Antifreeze (engine coolants)
High water based hydraulic fluids (HFA)
Water glycol hydraulic fluids (HFC)
Metal working fluids (emulsions and synthetics)

Benefits Easy to handle liquid


Suitable replacement for benzotriazole and tolutriazole
Protects yellow metals and cobalt alloys from corrosion

Restrictions Not recommended for use in combination with nitrites due to the possible formation of
nitrosamines

May begin to crystallise if stored at temperatures below 5 °C

Multimetal protection The combination of IRGAMET 42 and Irgacor L 190 neutralised with triethanolamine
is very effective in providing multimetal protection in aqueous fluids e.g. HFC

Engine coolants The liquid IRGAMET 42 provides the same degree of copper protection, but better ferrous.

Copper protection metal inhibition, than the solid tolutriazole in an engine coolant conforming to the French
Standard NF R 15-601.

These are typical metals/alloys used in the
construction of engines.

Copper and brass: 15 secs in HCl 37% soln(1:1) 1 = metal salts deposits on total surface
water. Then soft brush under tap water. 5 = pits or marbled on 25% of surface
Solder: 5 mins in boiling soln. of 1% glacial 10 = unchanged
acetic acid. Then soft brush under tap water. P = pitting , M = marbled
Cast Al: 5 mins in 2% soln H3PO4 (85%) at 80 °C.

Rinse under tap water.Soft brush under tap water


and rinse again.Repeat until deposit film disappears.
Take all metals, rinse with distilled or deionised water.
Dry with acetone and soft paper. Leave for 1 hr in
desiccator and weigh.

Corrosion inhibition Mixtures of IRGAMET 42 and Irgacor L 190 are very effective in providing iron protection.

50 ml test fluid together with 25 mg
cobalt powder and 5 g glass
beads (4 mm) are shaken
intensively together for 5 days
at ambient temperature. Then the
solution is filtered off. Concentration of
cobalt ions determined by atomic
absorption.
