Bartleby the scrivener is a victim of the capitalist expansion in America.

By declining the offer to

work in the job obviously shows rebellious behavior to the lawyer who expects obedience from
his workers. However, the lawyer has other workers who does not work to the full efficiency but
accepts their attitudes. In the early 1800s, wall street started an exceptional workspace from the
past. By gathering people and putting them in one room for a day, many people, like Bartleby,
started to feel like a cog in the machine, losing life. This leads to exceptional behavior like the
apparent disagreement Bartleby shows to the lawyer, due to the sudden oppression brought by
the capitalist expansion. While everyone else pursues being the “yes man”, Bartleby’s action
challenges the hierarchy that is born in Wall Street.
