How to Use a Bevel Gauge

A sliding T bevel, also known as a bevel gauge or false square is an adjustable gauge for setting and
transferring angles. Different from the square, which is fixed and can only set a 90° angle, the sliding T
bevel can set any angle and transfer it on another piece.
The bevel gauge is composed of two elements connected with a thumbscrew or wing nut, which allows
the blade to pivot and be locked at any angle. The handle is usually made of wood or plastic and the blade
of metal. The bevel can be used to duplicate an existing angle, or set to a desired angle by using it with any
number of other measuring tools (such as a protractor, or framing square).

Tools and Materials needed:

• Bevel Gauge
• Piece of Wood

Careful do not grab by the blade. Risk of cuts if not handled properly.
1. Remove bevel gauge from the case.
2. Check the bevel gauge blade of any damages .
3. Make sure the bevel gauge is the right tool for the work.
4. Release the thumbscrew or the wing nut to move blade easily.
5. Place the handle of the bevel gauge on the object that you try to find the angle.
6. Adjust the blade of the bevel gauge so there is no space between the blade and object.
7. Tighten the thumbscrew or the wing nut to fix the bevel gauge blade in place.
8. Remove the bevel gauge from the object carefully.
9. Use a protractor to find the angle or to transfer the angle on the other piece of wood.
10. Measure one more time to make sure the measurements are correct.
11. Transfer the angle on the paper or on the wood.
12. Release the thumbscrew or wingnut so the blade moves.
13. Collapse the blade in the store position.
14. Tighten the wing nut or thumb screw with blade in stored position.
15. Return the bevel gauge in the case.

This bevel gauge is often used in a woodworking shop. This tool is very helpful in carpentry and
woodworking, which is used to duplicate and transfer or maintain an angle for cutting timber neatly into
surfaces that might not necessarily be at right angles to each other.
