CAMPUS APC

EXAM JANUARY 2020 (Supp)

EXAMINER: R BRITS

MODERATOR: L LINDEBOOM

DURATION: 3 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS ON THE PAPER IN PEN

2. CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED
3. INDICATE CLEARLY ALL CALCULATIONS
1. (a) Write down the complex sine function sin z in the form sin z = u(x, y) + i v(x, y) where (1)
z = x + iy.
(b) Now use your answer to find the real and imaginary parts of the function (4)

g(z) = sin(sin z).

(c) Sketch the image of the region D under the function f (z) = cosh z where D is given by (5)

D = {z ∈ C : Im(z) ≤ −1} .

2. (a) Let f (z) = u(x, y) + i v(x, y) be defined and continuous in some neighborhood of a point (6)
z0 = x0 + i y0 , and differentiable at z0 itself. Show that, at this point, the first–order
partial derivatives of u and v exist and that they satisfy the Cauchy–Riemann equations.
(b) Explain what is meant by a harmonic function u : R2 → R. (1)
(c) Let u(x, y) be a real-valued function on R2 such that u and eu are harmonic. Show that (7)
u is constant. Hint: First show that (ux )2 + (uy )2 = 0 if both u and eu are harmonic.
3. (a) State and prove Cauchy’s Integral Theorem. (5)
(b) Let D be a simply connected domain, and suppose f is analytic everywhere on D except (4)
at a single point z0 ∈ D. Let C be any simple closed curve in D surrounding the point
z0 . Using a diagram together with your arguments, show that
Z Z
f (z) dz = f (z) dz
C S

where S is any circle in D with centre z0 and the same orientation as that of C.
4. Calculate the following integrals. In both cases the curve C has a counterclockwise direction:
(a) Z (6)
sin z cosh z
dz,
z(z 2 − 4)
C

with C : |z − 1| = 5.
(b) (5)
zez
Z
dz,
(4z + πi)3
C

with C : |z| = 1.
5. (a) Find the Laurent series for the function (4)

1 π
f (z) = z sin +
z 2
which converges in the region |z| > 0.
(b) Use your answer above to calculate the integral (2)
Z
1 π
z sin + dz,
z 2
C

with C : |z| = 1 counterclockwise.

6. Find and classify (with justification) all the singularities of the function (6)
z
f (z) = .
sin z

7. The function
1
f (z) =
2z 2 +1
has two isolated singularities.
(a) Find the Laurent series expansions for f in the punctured neighbourhoods of each of these (7)
singularities. Also give the precise regions on which each of these series converges.
(b) With justification, use your answer in (a) to calculate (3)
Z
1
I= 2
dz
2z + 1
C

where C is the curve C : |z| = 1 with counterclockwise direction.

(c) Showing all steps, now calculate the value of the integral in (b) using Cauchy’s method. (4)
