1. Insulator Withstand Test:

A dielectric withstand test (or pressure test, high potential or hipot test) is an electrical test performed
on a component or product to determine the effectiveness of its insulation. The test may be between
mutually insulated sections of a part or energized parts and electrical ground.
• The voltage of about 75% of the test voltage is applied and then increased gradually to reach
the test voltage in a time not less than five seconds.

• The test voltage is maintained at this value for one minute as per I.S. 2071 (Part II) – 1974.
Two flashover at positive polarity and one flashover at negative polarity is permitted.

2. Insulator Flashover and Puncture

Dry Flashover Tests: In these tests the a.c. voltage of power frequency is applied across the insulators
and increased at a uniform rate of about 2 per cent per second of 75% of the estimated test voltage, to
such a value that a breakdown occurs along the surface of the insulator. If the test is conducted under
normal conditions without any rain or precipitation, it is called “dry flashover test“.
Puncturevoltage:
The motivation behind this test is to decide the puncture voltage. The insulator to be tried is
suspended in protecting oil. A voltage is applied and expanded bit by bit until the puncture takes
place . The voltage at which insulator begins to penetrate is called as puncture voltage. This voltage
is normally 30% higher than that of the dry
flash over voltage for a suspension type insulator.

5. Test Procedure

Connect one unit of clean, dry suspension insulator across the high voltage AC power
supply. Tum on the circuit breaker and gradually increase the applied voltage till the
insulator flashover occurs. As soon as the flashover happens, switch off the main circuit
breaker quickly. Repeat this procedure three times recording flashover voltage each
time in a values Calculate the average value of peak flashover voltage (ie. Vy voltage).
b) Repeat part (a) for a string of two and three similar suspension insulators under
clean and dry conditions Repeat part (a) with only one unit under wet condition. c)

submit it during the next lab session. The report should contain title page, objectives,
