TEST II: FLUID MECHANICS (OPEN BOOK) COURSE CODE: CHE F212
DATE: 27/10/2016 TIME: 1 HR (4.00 – 5.00 PM) MAX. MARKS: 30
________________________________________________________________________
Question 1 [8 Marks]
A 300 reducing elbow is shown Fig.1. The fluid is water. Evaluate the components of force that must be
provided by the adjacent pipes to keep the elbow from moving.

Question 2 [7 Marks]
An incompressible liquid with negligible viscosity flows steadily through a horizontal pipe. The pipe
diameter linearly varies from 10 cm to 2.5 cm. over a length of 2 m. Develop an expression for the
acceleration of a fluid particle along the pipe centreline.

Question 3 [10 Marks]

For a steady, incompressible and laminar flow of fluid through a straight circular tube of constant cross
section, find the velocity profile, volume flow rate, mean velocity, maximum velocity and the relation
between velocity, mean velocity and maximum velocity using Navier-Stokes equation. Write all the
assumption for the above problem.

Question 4 [5 Marks]
Water flows steadily through an 82mm diameter pipe and discharges through a 32 mm diameter nozzle
to atmospheric pressure. The flow rate is 93 L/min. Calculate the minimum static pressure required in
the pipe to produce this flow rate.
