Question 1 [5 Marks]
For the inclined-tube manometer of Fig. 1 the pressure in pipe A is 4.14 kPa. The fluid in both pipes A
and B is water, and the gage fluid in the manometer has a specific gravity of 2.6. What is the pressure in
pipe B corresponding to the differential reading shown?

Question 2 [12 Marks]
The gate shown Fig. 2 is hinged at H. The gate is 3 m wide normal to the plane of the diagram. Calculate
the force required at A to hold the gate closed.

Question 3 [7 Marks]
A two-dimensional reducing bend (Fig.3) has a linear velocity profile at section 1. The flow is uniform
at sections 2 and 3. The fluid is incompressible and the flow is steady. Find the maximum velocity, V1,
max, at section 1.

Question 4 [6 Marks]
The velocity distribution for laminar flow between parallel plates is given by:, where h is the distance
separating the plates and the origin is placed midway between the plates. Consider flow of water at 15 0C
with maximum speed of 0.05 m/s, viscosity µ is 1.14×10-3 Ns/m2 and h=0.1 mm. Calculate the force on a
1 m2 section of the lower plate and give its direction.
