US$520.65 billion, the 12th largest in the world.

Samsung is a major manufacturer of electronic components such as lithium-ion batteries,

semiconductors, image sensors, camera modules, and displays for clients such as Apple,
Sony, HTC, and Nokia. It is the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones and
smartphones, starting with the original Samsung Solstice and later, the popularity of its
Samsung Galaxy line of devices. The company is also a major vendor of tablet computers,
particularly its Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab collection, and is regarded for
developing the phablet market with the Samsung Galaxy Note family of devices. It has also

surpassed Apple up until 2021. It is also the world's largest memory chip manufacturer and,
from 2017 to 2018, had been the largest semiconductor company in the world, briefly
dethroning Intel, the decades-long champion.

Samsung recently moved into their new state of the art headquarters which are split across
two high rise buildings. These buildings have the latest technology and are some of the best
examples of smart buildings around the world.

1. Carefully read through the background of the scenario.

2. Ensure that you take note of the labels and content in the supporting image.

Answer the following questions in the space provided, based on the passage and
figures given:

1. The company is busy redesigning their whole telecommunication and networking

infrastructure and asked you to assist. What type of network would you recommend they
implement that will incorporate all buildings in the newly envisaged complex? (1)
2. Samsung wants to create an amazingly fast secure, backbone-based, network between
the different Research & Development centers marked A & B (refer to the image). Take
note that it should be easy to add new devices to the network. What network topology and
communications media would you recommend they use that will allow for such a
high-speed backbone? (2)

3. They are always at the forefront of design and development and want to be different from
other companies. Which innovative and rarely used technology or media other than BPL
can they use that would be already available in their buildings that would not require
changes to their building or current layouts? (1)

4. Which wireless technology do you recommend Samsung use to connect to cellphone

manufacturing plants around the world? (1)

5. Samsung is scared that people might hack into their guided media network and through
eavesdropping steal new ideas. Which guided media do you recommend they consider
avoiding this? (1)

6. What type of processing should they implement if they want to ensure that each Research
unit around the world can function independently? (1)

7. The Samsung buildings, A and B, are roughly 83 metres apart. Which communication
option/technology do you recommend they use to send information wirelessly between
these buildings? (1)

8. Samsung want to allow employees to gain access to the building using their
smartphones. communication option/technology do you recommend they use? (1)

9. Samsung is considering using land-based unguided media in the future. It should be

installed on top of their buildings and will have a line of site. What communications media
would you recommend for this. (1)

Scenario 2 INDIVIDUALLY

Gold Reef City is an amusement park in Johannesburg, South Africa. Located on an old gold
mine which closed in 1971, the park is themed around the gold rush that started in 1886 on
the Witwatersrand, the buildings on the park are designed to mimic the same period. There
is a museum dedicated to gold mining on the grounds where it is possible to see a
gold-containing ore vein and see how gold is poured into barrels. And multiple shops around
the park can be located.

The managing company has asked you to assist with information on telecommunications
and networks. They are going to develop an extension to the park (Figure 2, Label A) that
will be situated 700 metres from the main entertainment hub (Figure 2, Label B). The resort
should receive telecommunication services from the main entertainment hub.

Figure 2: Map of Gold Reef City

The park will contain a main entertainment area (Figure 2, Label B) and about 40 attractions
that are linked by various walkways. The communications hub is situated in the Town square
(Figure 2, Label C). The furthest attraction will be 80 meters away from the main hub. They
need to focus on wireless communication media as municipal by laws dictate that no guided
media may be used to connect the main entertainment area with the new extension that is
separated by ESKOM and road infrastructure. They have also decided to stick to wireless
communication media in the resort itself.
