Introduction to Mevex
• Manufacturers of medium sized electron beam
accelerators
• E-beam systems from 2 - 40 MeV
• Power up to 50 kW per unit
• X rays for low dose applications (Phytosanitary and foods)
• Located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
• Installed Beam systems in America, Europe and Asia
• Excellent global support
Overview of the presentation
• Wide range of Mevex solutions: X, E, or X+E
• X-ray energy: 5 or 7.5MeV?
• Treatment of boxes or pallets?
• Pallet treatment with double row
• Pallet treatment for optimized DUR

Mevex accelerators for P I
• All energies come from a single scan horn.
• High Energy linacs:
• 10 MeV EB
• 10 MeV EB; 7.5 MeV E + X
• 10 MeV EB; 7.5 MeV E + X; 5 MeV E + X
• 7.5 MeV compact E + X
• 5 MeV compact E + X
• eXTRA (electron and X-ray Treatment and Research Accelerator)
• Adjustable from 4 MeV to 10 MeV E + X
• Pilot-production facility
• Flexible research tool
• Diversified and affordable machine for government organisations
• Installed Base
• More than 40 Ebeam machines world-wide
• 10 X-ray worldwide including 3 Industrial 7.5MeV X-ray machines
eXTRA – A tool for growing food irradiation
• What niche:
• Commercial: 10 MeV EB and 5 - 7.5 MeV X-ray
• Research: 3 to 10MeV electrons with x-ray at all energies.
• Why:
• Because a majority of countries do not yet have an access to a food treatment
electron /x-ray facility with a capacity for real size testing
• Because most countries do not yet have a RESEARCH Tool combining EB and
some X-ray
• Who:
• Typical user is a pilot plant operated through a collaboration between
governmental organizations, growers, exporters, and the food industry.
• Such a pilot plant in every country can demonstrate the technical and economic
feasibility of PI.

Note:
• Conservative estimates
• Simple single-row, 2-sided treatment of pallets
• These values are to show order-of-magnitude effects.
• Higher density tends to improve x-ray efficiency.
• Densities correspond to PI product mixes.
Select the best EB energy to minimize the DUR
• DUR requirements are challenging when using ebeam for PI
• Take the example where the minimum required dose is 400Gy.
• Maximum allowed dose is always 1000Gy
• Therefore the maximum allowed DUR is 2.5
• By the time the process uncertainties are added to the max and
min doses the allowable DUR could be reduced to 2
• By selecting the ideal energy from the thickness vs DUR curve for
the specific product to be treated, it is possible to improve the DUR
• Many product packages become “treatable” with ebeam if energy is
adjusted to obtain the best DUR
• Throughput efficiency improves with optimal energy selection
Selection of optimal EB energy to reduce DUR
If the product thickness is
7.5MeV 10MeV
6g/cm^2 then the DUR at 10MeV
would be 2.5:1 without foam
packing. DUR for 7.5 and 10 MeV
3.00
If the energy can be lowered to
7.5MeV then the DUR is 1.5:1
2.50
without foam.
2.00
The RED area at 10MeV becomes
a GREEN area at 7.5MeV.
