Cat® D6 GC vs. Komatsu D85ESS-2A


Overview:

A productivity study was performed at the


Caterpillar Tosno Demo Center (TDC) to compare the
Cat® D6 GC to the Komatsu D85ESS-2A track-type
tractor in construction applications. The study
consisted of slot dozing and trench backfilling
operations. Cycle times, sprocket revolutions during
dig, dirt volumes, and fuel consumption were
recorded. Productivity and efficiencies were calculated
based on the recorded information.

Objective: Document and compare the productivity


and efficiency results of the two machines
during slot dozing and trench backfill operations.
Study Dates: 10 – 17 May, 2021
Location: Tosno, Russia.

Overall Summary:
1. The D6 GC exceeded D85ESS-2A in slot dozing productivity by 15%, consuming 8% more fuel which
resulted in +7% fuel efficiency.
2. The D85ESS-2A was more efficient (+4%) in trench backfilling application consuming 7% less fuel than D6
GC and showing -3% productivity. This is mainly due to larger blade with +10% capacity and +10% width
3. In a combined working cycle when 70% is slot dozing and 30% backfill D6 GC is 13% more productive
consuming +8% more fuel. As a result, D6 GC is 5% more efficient than D85ESS-2A in medium application.
4. D6 GC is a better machine for medium to high load application with focus on fast job completion.

Other factors to consider:


1. Grouser working area on D85ESS-2A was 33% less due to wear.
2. D85ESS-2A is 8% lighter and has 15% lower ground pressure than D6 GC which resulted in better flotation
on sand.
3. D6 GC additional 8% in weight and engine power was visible during the test.
4. D6 GC ground speed on 2nd reverse gear is 5% higher based on published technical specifications.

Test Preparation:

A differential (Dual-chamber) DFM 250 DS7 HP fuel meter was used to measure the fuel consumption during the
entire test. In addition to that a “top-the-tank” method was used to validate the results.
The data from the fuel meter was sent to the server each 10 seconds and was used to create charts and calculate
consumptions for selected time intervals.

Productivity Results:
Machines were working in “Sandbox”. The layout is shown below.
Because of the nature of the sand there was no need for compaction during the test. Each machine dug a total of six
pits. On the last day D85ESS-2A customer operator dug two trenches to check the maximum efficiency.
Operators were rotated to remove them as variables in the data.
Machines used 1st gear for all digging and 2nd gear for return.
Pit volumes were measured after each test run using Trimble Business Center.
Material: Dry sand, 1300 kg/m³

Applications:
Each machine dug a slot approximately one blade width wide, 2/3 blade height deep and 40 meters long.
The dig, transition and dump sections of the pit are shown below. Sprocket revolutions were counted during the dig
portion only to calculate track slip. Times were recorded for the start of the dig, start of the carry, and return.
Two people were used per pit for timing and recording. One person was responsible for counting sprocket
revolutions, one person recorded data.
Both blades were measured in pitch angle from the back of the blade and adjusted to the same angle for the test.

Results

Trench Backfill
The trench backfill operation was done after each slot dozing.

Combined cycle results:


70% of the time is slot dozing and 30% is a trench backfill operation.

Idling
D6 GC is consuming 3.9 liters of fuel per hour when idling and D85ESS-2A is at 4.0 l/h with just 1% advantage to D6
GC.
