Lesson 1
Salvation

A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to understand the condition of man and the atoning
work of Christ.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, the student should be able to:
a. Explain how the Bible describes the condition of humankind at
creation.
b. Explain why man needs salvation.
c. Explain how one should respond to the sacrifice of Christ.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that
whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God
did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the
world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but
whoever does not believe stands condemned already because He has not
believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:16-18, NIV)

D. THEME EXPOSITION:

1. The Condition of Man at Creation

“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created
him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27, NIV)

a. Man was created in the image of God / in the likeness of

God.

b. Man was endowed with characteristics of God’s image:

● Man is a living soul - emotion, will, intellect.

● Man has a spiritual nature – he is able to have fellowship and

communion with God.

c. Man was given two gifts at creation:

● Gen. 1:28a – the gift of dominion.

3
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● Gen. 1:28b – the gift of fruitfulness and increase.

2. The Fall of Man – Genesis 3:1-7

a. The Temptation and the Fall of Man

● Man was deceived, chose to disobey God, and sinned.

b. The Consequences of the Fall

● Man stands guilty of sin before a holy God.
(Romans 3:23; 5:19)
● The Fall resulted in spiritual death. (Romans 5:12)
● Man’s mind became wicked and perverted . (Romans 1:18-32;
3:13-18)
● Man became under the control of the devil (1 John 5:19)
● The ground became cursed. (Genesis 3:17)

The Fall of man in the Garden of Eden brought a curse of sin, sorrow,
disease, strife, suffering, and death to man and to the world.

3. The Atoning Work of Jesus Christ

“Because of sin, God’s wrath was poured upon mankind.

Because of love, God sent His Son.” (Edmund Chan)

Jesus came to pay the price for man’s salvation! (Acts 4:10-12)

a. Jesus did for man what he could not do for himself.

● John 3:16 Jesus took man’s place.

● 1 Peter 1:18,19 Jesus took man’s punishment.

b. Jesus’ suffering and death satisfied God’s judgment on sin and

reconciled us back to the Father.

● Romans 5:6-10 Man is redeemed by His blood.

● Ephesians 2:13 Man is reconciled to God by Christ’s atoning
work.

4. How to Respond to the Sacrifice of Christ:

Jesus replied, “I assure you, unless you are born again, you can
never see the Kingdom of God.” (John 3:3, NLT)
4
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

a. Romans 3:23 Admit you are a sinner in need of a

Savior.

b. John 5:24; 3:16 Believe Christ’s sacrifice is enough to pay

for your sin.

c. 1 John 1:9 Confess your sin, repent , ask God to

forgive you
John 1:12 and receive Jesus as your Lord and
Savior.

E. CONCLUSION:
Man is lost in sin and can never save himself. It is only through the atoning
sacrifice of Jesus Christ that man can be saved from his sin. Christ’s
sacrifice is complete to provide for man’s redemption, but man needs to
respond by accepting this gift of salvation that Christ has provided on the
Cross.

Lesson 2
Repentance

A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to understand that repentance is the only way to
be restored in our relationship with God.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the lesson, each student should be able to:
1. Describe mans condition as a consequence of sin.
2. Explain the difference between repentance and remorse.
3. Explain the redemption concept and steps to repentance.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let everyone of you be baptized in
the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive
the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)

D. THEME EXPOSITION:

1. The Consequences of Sin for Mankind

2. The Redeemer’s Plan for Mankind

a. The purpose of God for mankind is summarized in the word
redemption. There are three Greek words that are
translated into the word “redemption.”

● Agorazo: “To buy in the market”; this word gives the idea of a slave
market.
● Exagorazo: “To buy and to take out of the market”, to be taken out
of the market, no longer for sale.
● Lutroo: “To loose,” to free someone through payment of price.

b. Redemption covers three areas:

6
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● Physical Isaiah 53:4,5; Psalm 23:1;

Philippians 4:19

● Emotional/Mental Psalm 147:3; Isaiah 40:29

2 Timothy 1:7; James 3:17-18

● Spiritual Ephesians 1:7; Col. 1:21-22

3. Man’s Response to Redemption

a. Man can avail of God’s forgiveness and redemption through

repentance.

b. Repentance is a change of thinking that leads one to turn away

from sin and turn towards God.
“Repentance means hating sin enough to turn from it.”

c. Difference between Repentance and Remorse (2 Cor. 7:10)

Remorse Repentance
(ex. Judas)
(ex. Prodigal Son)

Feeling sorrow for sins committed Feeling sorrow for sins

but does not confront sins committed and confronts sins

Deep anguish over sin but Deep anguish over sin

does not change direction of life and changes direction

Emotional experience only Faith choice

*sinner goes back to sin *sinner turns from sin

to God

4. Specific Steps for Repentance

a. Psalm 51:3,4 Admit and ackowledge your sin.

b. I John 1:9; Ps. 32: 5 Confess your sin.

c. Gal. 3:13; Col 2:14-15 Renounce your sin and change

direction.

7
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

CONCLUSION

When someone truly repents, fulfilling each one of these steps, then the
person is ready to enjoy the benefits that God has already prepared.

Each person needs to go through a time of restoration with God according

to the steps and scriptures you have just learned. We will do this through
the “Encounter” but even now start to repent, ask God to reveal to you
what is not pleasing to Him in your life, and when He does repent of it
immediately.

A change in your direction from sin towards God can happen only when
you surrender yourself totally to the control of the Holy Spirit and be led
by Him in your thoughts, speech and actions.

The message of man’s fall and God’s redemption can be summed up in

the following as shared by Ps. Edmund Chan:
1. We lost it all.
2. Christ paid it all.
3. God redeems it all.
4. We surrender it all.

c. 5. Reading the Bible
One of the keys to a Christian’s spiritual growth and abundant and
victorious life is a regular time spent in reading the Word.

Here are practical steps you can follow to benefit from a regular time
of Bible reading and meditation:

a. Select a specific time.

b. Choose a specific place.
c. Follow a simple plan.
✔ Ask God to meet you in Scripture.
o Pray that God will speak to you through the Scripture.
✔ Read with a teachable spirit.
o Don’t just read for information, but for transformation.
✔ Choose a brief passage from the Bible (plan systematically).

o READ. What does this text say?

o MEDITATE. What does this text say to me?
o PRAY. What do I want to say to God
through this text?

o ACT. What difference will this text make in my

life?

✔ Take one thought or verse with you through the day.

✔ Memorize a verse.

6. Seven Points to Remember in Reading the Bible*

a. Read it lovingly – the Bible is the Word of my Savior to me,
(Psalm 119:11)

b. Read it reverently – the Bible is the Word of God, the

Almighty Savior and Judge

c. Read it prayerfully – the Bible is God’s message to me, to

my own heart and life.

13
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

d. Read it meditatively – be like Isaac of old and meditate on

the Word of God.

e. Read it systematically – read right through the Bible, not just

selected portions.

f. Read it resolutely – I will obey that which my Father teaches

me from His Book.

g. Read it daily – not just on Sundays but every day of your life
read a portion.

*Source Unknown

e. F. CONCLUSION
Do not stay as a baby that needs milk. Once you have been in the Church
for a while there is a need to stop breastfeeding and start taking bread
and solid food. You need to grow and become strong to move from being
a child to become a parent who can feed others.

1. The Basic Elements of Prayer

a. What
● Prayer is communion and fellowship between God and man.

b. Why
● Prayer is the believer’s lifeline; no believer survives without it.
o It gives you spiritual endurance (Luke 18:1)
o It brings you into the spiritual realm (2 Kings 6:17)

● Prayer consists of at least four elements:

Adoration Praise and worship of the soul/spirit to

God (Matthew 6:9).

Confession Repentance from every sin (Matt. 6:12).

Thanksgiving Being thankful for everything (Phil. 4:6).
Supplication Petitions, requests, intercession, desires
(Matt. 6:11,13).

● Our prayers should be directed to God the Father (Acts 12:5), in

the name of Jesus (John 14:13), through the power of the Holy Spirit
(Eph. 6:18).

2. God’s Answers to Prayer

a. Yes – “Before you call, I will answer . . . . “ (Isaiah 65:24)

b. No – Paul asked for healing but God said “no.”
(2 Cor. 12:7-10)
c. Wait – We must wait for God’s will and God’s time.

c. Psalm 66:18 - Sin

16
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

d. James 4:3 - Asking Amiss

E. CONCLUSION

1. We will never learn to pray by learning about the subject – we

must pray!!

2. Be sure to thank God constantly for answered prayer, whether the

answer you receive is yes, no or wait.

3. Pray with an open Bible and use a notebook to write down anything
God may tell you and to record your petitions. Make a note of when
you started praying for something and the date it is answered.

4. Remember, “The devil is not terribly frightened by our human efforts

or credentials. But he knows his kingdom wil be damaged when we
begin to lift up our hearts to God.” (Jim Cymbala, The Greatest
Discovery, p.20)

Lesson 5

Water Baptism

A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to understand what the Bible says about water baptism
and the importance for all believers to obey God in this area.

B. GOALS:
At the end of this session, each student should be able to:
1. Explain what water baptism is.
2. Explain why water baptism is necessary.
3. Explain the requisites of water baptism.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19

D. THEME EXPOSITION:

1. What is Water Baptism?

a. Baptism comes from the Greek “baptizo” and the root word
“bapto” meaning “to sink or immerse.”
● Baptism is a public declaration that one has received Christ in
his/her life, and that he/she now has a new life.
● It is an outward symbol of an inward reality; an outward sign of
what God has done within you.

b. Baptism is identifying with Christ - Romans 6:4-13.

● In Christ’s death – the Christian being laid down in the act of

baptism.

● In Christ’s burial – the Christian being immersed (buried) in water.

● In Christ’s resurrection – the Christian coming up from the water

signifying new life.

18
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

o Baptism in water reveals to others that the person has repented,

been forgiven and saved, is identified with Christ in His death and
resurrection, and has begun his Christian walk with a definite, tangible,
and physical act of obedience to Christ (George O. Wood, “Acts,” p. 52)
o As the believer is immersed in water, he is saying goodbye to his
old master Satan and dying to the rule of his sinful nature.
o As the believer rises from the water, he is rising to a new life in
Christ, and declaring that he now wants Jesus to live His resurrection life
through him.

2. Why should we be baptized?

a. To follow Christ’s command ( Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38)

● Baptism is NOT an option for the believer.

b. To follow Christ’s example (Matthew 3:13-17)

● Though Jesus did not need to go through the baptism of
repentance of John because He had not committed sin nor was there
any deceit in his mouth, Jesus did it to give us the example of obedience
.

3. Who Should Be Baptized?

a. Those who have heard the Word of God and believed it.
( Mark 16:16)

b. Those who have believed, trusted and received

Christ. (John 3:3)

c. Those who have repented. ( Acts 2:38)

4. How Should One Be Baptized?

a. In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
(Matthew 28:19)
b. By immersion. Matthew 3:16; Acts 8:38-39

E. CONCLUSION:
As a follower of Christ, each believer needs to be water baptized. It is a
visible sign of repentance and obedience. Each student attending the
School of Leaders should be water baptized before the end of Level 1.

19
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

Lesson 6
Faith

A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to understand the Biblical concept of faith and its
importance in living a life of victory.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, the students should be able to:
1. Understand what faith really is.
2. Realize its importance in living a victorious Christian life.
3. Apply faith in his/her daily walk.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“And without faith, it is impossible to please God.” Hebrews 11:6

D. THEME EXPOSITION:

1. What Faith Is

a. Dictionary – Faith is belief, trust, fidelity, or loyalty

b. Bible – Hebrews 11:1 - Faith is the confident assurance that

what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of
things we cannot yet see.

● Faith is not the blind act of the soul; faith is confidence upon two
things:

o The Person of God – who He is

✔ Faith that causes you to act because you know who He is

o The Word of God - the best source of faith

✔ Faith that causes you to act because _____________________ .

● Faith is believing to the extent of turning over your life to God’s

control.

20
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● Faith is neither knowledge nor assent (agreement); faith involves

appropriation (to take possession of; to make use of). It is taking God
for His Word!

✔ Head Belief – knowledge about God or Christ, and a general

acceptance of the Bible.

✔ Heart belief – faith from the heart that causes the person to act on
his faith.

● Faith is believing God’s Word.

(Matt. 8:5-13)
● Faith is trusting God completely. (Proverbs 3:5)
● Faith is doing God’s Word.
(James 1:22)

✔ The proof of genuine faith is the actions that result from it.
✔ We must base our faith on Christ and His Word and not on our own
faith.
✔ “Faith is soul leaping forth to embrace Christ in whom it believes.”
-Alban Douglas

2. Where Faith Comes From:

a. The Divine Source – faith is the work of God

● God the Father – Romans 12:3

● God the Son – Hebrews 12:2
● God the Spirit – Galatians 5:22

b. The Human Source:

● By hearing/ reading the Word of God

(Romans 10:17)

● By asking for greater faith

(Mark 9:24, Luke 17:5)

● By exercising it daily

2. What Faith Does:

21
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

a. Faith leads to salvation . (Acts 16:31)

b. Faith makes us please God. (Hebrews 11:6)

c. Faith makes us conquerors. (Roman 8:37)

● By faith, we overcome the world.

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world.
This is the
victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who
is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that
Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:4,5 (NIV)

● By faith, we overcome every argument against us.

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the
contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish
arguments and every pretension that sets itself against God, and we take
captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:4,5
(NIV)

E. CONCLUSION:
Faith is fundamental to Christian belief and conduct. Faith is ABSOLUTE
TRUST that the believer places in God and in His Word. It allows the
believer to declare things that are not as if they already are. Faith is the
main requirement that God demands of us in order to approach Him. It
operates in all areas of our lives, helping us to experience the
supernatural.

Lesson 7
The Holy Spirit
22
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to know who the Holy Spirit is and understand the
importance of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, the students should be able clearly understand
and explain:
1. the person of the Holy Spirit and in relation to God the Father and
God the Son.
2. the work and ministry of the Holy Sprit.
3. the necessity of the Holy Spirit in one’s life, and desire to receive
the power of the Holy Spirit.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter
(Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby)
that He may remain with you forever - the Spirit of Truth, Whom the
world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know and
recognize Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. “(John 14:16-
17)
Other References: John 14:25-26; 15:26; 16:7-16

D. THEME EXPOSITION:

1. The Person of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead.
(Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Genesis 1:26; Luke 3:21-22;
Acts 2:32-33)
● He is a person.
o Not a mere influence, force or power
o Has intelligence (hears & speaks)
( John 16:13-14)
o Has feelings or emotions (Eph. 4:30)
● He is God .
o Has divine attributes
▪ Omnipresent (Psa. 139:7-10)
▪ Omnipotent (Gen. 1:2; Luke 1:35)

▪ Omniscient (1 Cor. 2:10,11)

o Performs divine acts

23
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

▪ Creation (Gen. 1:2; Job 33:4;

Psa. 104:30)

▪ Salvation (1 Cor. 6:11; Eph. 1:13)

▪ Life ( John 6:63)

▪ Conviction (John 16:8-11)

2. The Work and Ministry of the Holy Spirit

a. In relation to the Pre-Believer.

● The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin – John 16:8-11
● He does this largely (though not exclusively) through the testimony
of believers for the Holy Spirit operates on the conscience of men
through the Word of God.

b. In relation to the Believer

● John 14:16-18 He is the Counselor.
● John 14:26 He teaches us all things and reminds us
all the things Jesus has taught us.
● John 15:26 He reveals Christ to us.

● John 16:13 He guides us into all truth.

Acts 13:2

● Romans 8:14-17 He assures us we are His children.

Gal. 4:6
● Romans 8:26-27 He intercedes for us.

● 2 Cor 1:21-22 He seals us as a guarantee of our

Eph 1:13,14 inheritance.

● Gal. 5:22-23 He enables us to bear the fruit.

● Ezek. 36:27 He gives us the power to obey.

❖ The Holy Spirit is called the “Comforter” (Parakletos- somebody
called to come alongside to help us, to guide us, to empower us, to
counsel, to teach, and to anoint us).
24
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

3. The Power of the Holy Spirit

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you
will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to
the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 (NIV)
The New Testament speaks of two distinct experiences of the disciples
with the Holy Spirit. These experiences are available to every believer
today.
a. John 20:21-22 “Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the
Father has sent me, so I am sending you.’ And with that He breathed
on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.”’
● In the life of the believer, this experience is the entrance of the
Holy Spirit in your spirit at the moment you received Christ as Lord and
Savior and you were born again. This is the INDWELLING of the Holy
Spirit. (John 4:10; 13-14)

b. Acts 1:4-8; Acts 2:1-4 “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
● In the life of the believer, this experience is the Baptism in the
Holy Spirit when God wants to be overflowing with His power. This is
the INFILLING of the Holy Spirit. (John 7: 37-39)
● This is the Baptism of power, equipping and anointing for ministry,
evidenced initially by speaking in tongues. (Acts 19:2-6)
● Being baptized in the Holy Spirit is being “immersed” into the Holy
Spirit so that you will be “led, controlled, and influenced” by the Holy
Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18)
● Being baptized in the Holy Spirit:
o empowers you to serve God more effectively (as in the experience
of the disciples after they were Spirit baptized – they became bold
witnesses of Christ);
o empowers you to live for Him for Him victoriously as you spend
time building up yourself by praying in the tongue God has given you (1
Corinthians 14:4a).
o gives you power and freedom in the expression of your worship
and prayers (1 Corinthians 14:2).

E. CONCLUSION:
We can be what God wants us to be and do what He wants us to do
ONLY through the Holy Spirit!

Lesson 9
Overcoming the Devil
Reference: “Discipleship 201,” Bethany World Prayer Center, 1998, pp. 31-36.

A. OBJECTIVE:

27
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

For each student to understand that the devil is a real enemy who can
be overcome.

B. GOALS:
By the end of the class, each student should be able to:
1. Understand the foundation of his victory in Christ.
2. Identify the three basic weapons of Satan against him.
3. Identify and apply the ways to overcome Satan.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you.” (James 4:7)
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the
one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
(I John 4:4).

D. THEME EXPOSITION:

1. Truths About Overcoming the Devil

a. God’s will for you is VICTORY! (1 Corinthians 15:57)
● Because of Christ’s victory at Calvary over sin, death, and the devil,
every believer has the right and ability to walk victoriously in life, free from
guilt, condemnation, fear, bondage, and defeat.
● God always leads you to triumph in Christ. (2 Corinthians 2:14)

b. You can overcome the devil. (James 4:7)

● As a believer, you can resist the devil and he will
flee from you.
● The Bible declares that greater is He that is in you
than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

c. You must know the devices or tricks of the

enemy. (1 Peter 5:8)
● To overcome the devil effectively, you must know the
____________ of the enemy.

2. The Three Basic Weapons of Satan Against the Believer

a. Temptation (he is the tempter – Matthew 4:3; 1 Thes. 3:5)
b. Accusation (he is the accuser – Revelation 12:10-11)
c. Destruction (he is the destroyer – John 10:10a)

28
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

3. Ways to Overcome the Devil

a. TEMPTATION
● How Temptation Works (James 1:12-15)
o The devil looks for an area of your life where you are weak.
▪ Lust of the flesh (ex. sexual immorality, gluttony, vices, laziness,
other sins of the flesh)

▪ Lust of the eyes (greed, covetousness, and others sins relating to

money and possessions)

▪ The pride of life (vanity, strife, anger, envy, idolatry or whenever you
put self at the center of all things and relationships)

o He then entices you in that area. (1 John 2:16)

o If you give in to the temptation, sin is conceived.
Temptation is not sin; it is giving in to temptation that is sin.

o After sin gets a “hook” in you, it becomes stronger and stronger (if
you do not repent) until it controls you and finally destroys you.

● How to Successfully Overcome Temptation

o Build yourself up spiritually through prayer and Bible study. (1 Thes.
5:17; Matthew 4:1-11)

o Use the Word as a sword against temptation and the devil’s lies.
(Ephesians 6:17; Matthew 4:1-11).

o Repent and renounce all known sin in your life, specially

unforgiveness, bitterness, rebellion, or occult

involvement as these left alone can allow access to Satan to build

strongholds in your life. (Proverbs 28:13)

o Stay away from evil influences . ( 1 Cor. 15:33;

1 Tim. 6:11; 2 Tim. 2:22; 1 John 2:15)

o Stay in close fellowship with other believers through your local

church. (Hebrews 10:25)

29
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

o Stand on the promise of God that He will not allow Satan to tempt
you beyond what you can handle but will give a way of escape. (1 Cor.
10:13)

2. ACCUSATION

● How Satan Brings Accusation that Leads to Condemnation

o He keeps you looking inwardly at your own shortcomings and

failures instead of looking upwards ,(Hebrews 4:16) so that you will be
distracted.

o He wants you to quit.

▪ Through accusations and condemnation, he tries to get you to give
up and quit spiritually.

▪ He convinces you that you are not changed, that God does not love
you, or that you will never get victory so that you will get discouraged and
quit.

● How to Overcome Satan’s Accusation

o You have three areas of protection based on Revelation 12:11 which

tells how the accuser of the brethren was overcome by believers.

▪ The blood. “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb.”

● When the devil accuses you of past failures, inadequacies,
shortcomings, and sins, you are to point him to the blood of Jesus.

● The devil has no case agains you before God because the blood of
Jesus cleanses you from all sin. (1 John 1:7)

▪ The spoken Word. “They overcame him by….the Word of their

testimony.”

● You are to speak (or testify) what the Word says about you and your
sins.
● When the devil attacks you with condemnation, speak the Word to
the thoughts and accusations coming against you.

▪ Absolute surrender to the Lord. “They overcame him … and they

loved not their lives unto death.”
● Be sold out to the Lord that not even death could make you turn
back.
30
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● When your commitment to God is sure, the devil’s darts of

accusation fall harmlessly off without hurting you,

3. DESTRUCTION

● How Satan Sows Destruction

o The devil is like a “roaring lion, walking aboutm seeking whom he

may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

o He comes “to steal, to kill, and to destroy.” (John 10:10a)

o The following are his major areas of destruction:

▪ Physical sickness
▪ Bondage (to alcohol, drugs, sexual sins, gossip)
▪ Mental and emotional attacks
▪ Financial problems
▪ Family problems

● How to Turn Back the Enemy’s Destruction

o Stand on God’s promises.

▪ Find out God’s promises regarding your particular area of need, and
claim them for your own life.

▪ For example, if the devil is hitting you with sickness, study what the
Bible says about healing and believe that for your life.

▪ Speak the Word.

● Speak God’s Word to the need and to Satan when he attacks.

● This is what Jesus did when He was tempted by the devil in Matthew
4.

▪ Obey God.

● Make sure you are walking in obedience to the known will of God.
● Disobedience brings destruction.

▪ Walk in faith.
31
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● Without faith, it is impossible to please God or5 defeat the devil.

● Faith is a shield that is able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked
one. (Ephesians 6:16; 1 John 5:4)

▪ Bind and loose.

● Bind the devil in Jesus’ name and loose the blessings of God from
Satan’s grasp (Matthew 12:28-29; 16:19)
● Act as God’s delegated authority and enforce the victory that Christ
has already won for tou over the devil and his power. (Luke 10:19)

▪ Stand.
● Stand your ground and don’t give up. (Ephesians 6:10-18)
● Stand against him using your weapons of spiritual warfare.
E. CONCLUSION
Satan has been defeated at the Cross. He no longer has any power over
you. The only power he has over your life is what you allow him to have.

Lesson 10
Knowing What We Believe

A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to understand the basic doctrines of our Christian faith.

B. GOALS:
By the end of the class, each student should be able to:
1. Identify the basic doctrines of our Christian faith.
4. Understand these doctrines and be able to explain them.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give
an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that
you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15

D. THEME EXPOSITION:
The following are the basic doctrines of Christian faith that we believe in.
Take time to know and understand them as they are essential in your
sharing the Gospel to others; in your growth as a Christian; and in your
spiritual warfare against the devil, who will always try to make you doubt
the truth.

1. The Scriptures Inspired

32
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

We believe that the Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are
verbally inspiered of God and are the revelation of God to man, the
infallible, authoritattive rule of faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:15-17;
1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21)

2. The One True God

We believe that the one true God has revealed Himself as the eternally
self-existent “I AM,” the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer
as embodying the relationship and association as Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10,11; Matthew 28:19); Luke 3:21-
122; Revelation 4:8-11).

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. The
Scriptures declare:
a. His virgin birth (Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:31; Luke 1:35)
b. His sinless life (Hebrews 7:26; 1 Peter 2:22)

c. His miracles (Acts 2:22; Acts 10:38)

d. His substitutionary work on the cross (1 Corinthians 15:3;
2 Corinthians 5:21)
e. His bodily resurrection from the dead (Matthew 28:6; Luke 24:39;
1 Corinthians 15:4)
f. His exaltation to the right hand of God (Acts 1:9; Acts 1:11; Acts 2:33;
Philippians 2:9-11; Hebrews 1:3)

4. The Fall of Man

We believe that man was created good and upright; for God said, “Let us
make man in our own image, after our likeness.” However, man by
voluntary transgression fell and thereby incurred not only physical death
but also spiritual death, which is separation from God. (Genesis 1:26,27;
Genesis 2:17; Genesis 3:6; Romans 5:12-19)

5. The Salvation of Man

We believe that man’s only hope of redemption is through the shed blood
of Jesus Christ the Son of God.
a. Conditions to Salvation
Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the
Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the
Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, man becomes an heir of
God, according to the hope of eternal life. (Luke 24:47; John 3:3; Romans
10:13-15; Ephesians 2:8; Titus 2:11; Titus 3:5-7.

b. The Evidence of Salvation

1) The inward evidence of salvation is the direct witness of the Spirit.
33
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

(Romans 8:16)
2) The outward evidence to all men is a life of righteousness and true
holiness (Ephesians 4:24; Titus 2:12).

6. Ordinances of the Church

a. Water Baptism
We believe that believers are to be water baptized by immersion. The
ordinance of baptism by immersion is commanded by the Scriptures. All
who repent and believe on Christ as Saviour and Lord are to be baptized;
thus, they declare to the world that they have died to sin with Christ and
that they also have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life.
(Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 10:47, 48; Rolmans 6:4)
b. Holy Communion
We believe in observing the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Supper, consisting
of the elements – bread and the fruit of the vine – is a memorial (reminder)
of his suffering and death (1 Corinthians 11:26);,

and a prophecy of His second coming (1 Corinthians 11:26). As you

partake of the Lord’s Supper, you remember what Jesus did for you on
the cross; you remember your desperate need for Him; and you rejoice in
knowing that He is coming back again.

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

We believe that all believers are entitled to and should ardently expect
and earnestly seek the promnise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy
Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This
was the normal experience of all in the early Christian church. With it
comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the
gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry. (Luke 24:9; Acts 1:4-5; Acts
1:8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31).

The experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the

new birth. (Acts 8:12-17; Acts 10:44-46; Acts 11:14-16; Acts 15:7-9).
With the baptisn in the Holy Spirit come such experiences as:
a) an overflowing fullness of the spirit ( John 7:37-39; Acts 4:8)
b) a deepened reverence for God ( Acts 2:43, Hebrews 12:28)
c) an intensified consecration to God and dedication to His work
(Acts 2:42)
d) a more active love for Christ, for His Word and for the lost,
(Mark 16:20)

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

We believe that the baptism of believer in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by
the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God
34
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

gives them utterance. (Acts 2:4) The speaking in tongues in this instance
is the same in essence as the gift of tongues, but is different in purpose
and use. (1 Corinthians 12:4-10; 1 Corinthians 12:28)

9. Sanctification
We believe that every believer goes through sanctification form the
moment he receives Christ into his heart. Sanctification is an act of
separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God. (Romans
12:1,2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 13:12. The Scriptures teach a life
of “holiness without which no man shall see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14)

By the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to obey the command: “Be ye
holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15, 16)

Sanctification is realized in the believer by recognizing his identification

with Christ in His death and resurrection, and by the faith reckoning daily

upon the fact of that union, and by offering every faculty continually to the
dominion of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 6:1-11; Romans 6:13; Romans
8:1,2; Romand 8:13; Galatians 2:20; Philippians 2:12, 13; 1 Peter 1:5).

10. The Church and Its Mission

We believe that God has established the Church (local and universal) as
the Body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Spirit, with divine
appointments for the fulfillment of the great commission. Each believer,
born of the Spirit, becomes a part of the Church or Body of Christ.
(1 Corinthians 12:12-14) which God has established for a three-fold
purpose:
a. Worship of God (John 4:23,24)
b. Evangelization of the world (Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:19,20;
Mark16:15-20)
c. Building a body of saints being perfected in the image of His
Son(Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Corinthians 12:28; 1 Corinthians 14:12)

The LOCAL CHURCH is a part of the UNIVERSAL CHURCH. All

believers need to be a part of a local church (Hebrews 10:25). By being
a part of a local church:
a. you are submitting yourself to spiritual authority (a spiritual covering);
b. you are protecting yourself from false doctrine, seducing spirits, and
deception;
c. you are strengthened and encouraged by other members of the Body
of Christ;
d. you are able to serve God by exercising the gifts He has given you,

11. Divine Healing

35
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

We believe in divine Healing as an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance

from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all
believers. (Isaiah 53:4,5; Matthew 8:16,17; James 5:14-16).

12. The Blessed Hope

We believe that the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ
and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto
the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the church. (1
Thessalonians 4:16,17; Titus 2:13; 1 Corinthians 15:51-55)
a. Believers should be ready for the imminent return of Jesus, for we do
not know the day or hour of His return.
b. As that moment, the belivers in the grave will be resurrected, and
those who are still alive will be caught up to the Lord in the air and will
brought to heaven.

13. The Second Coming and Millennial Reign of Christ

We believe in the second coming of Christ which includes the rapture of
the saints, which is our blessed hope, followed by the visible return of
Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years.
(Zechariah 14:5; Matthew 24:30-31; Revelation 1:7; Revelation 19:11-
14; Revelation 20: 1-6).

a. Jesus will come back to the earth a second time (Acts 1:11) to set up
His Kingdom. This will take place at the end of a seven-year perios of
turmoil on earth called the Tribulation. (Daniel 12:1; Revelation 6,8-9,16)

b. Jesus will return to earth with His saints ( 1 Thes. 3:13) and will
overthrow the AntiChrist and his forces, to cast the devil into ta bottomless
pit , and to set up His earthly kingdom for a thousand years. (Rev. 19,20)
This millenial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel, (Ezekiel
37:21,22; Zephaniah 3:19,20; Romans 11:26,27) and the establishment
of universal peace. (Isaiah 11:6-9; Psalms 72:3-8; Micah 4:3,4).

14. The Final Judgment

We believe that there will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead
will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not
found written in the Book of Life, together with the devil and his angels,
the beast and the false prophet, will be consigned to the everlasting
punishment in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the
second death. (Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43-48; Revelation 19:20;
Revelation 20:11-15; Revelation 21:8).

15. The New Heavens and the New Earth

36
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

We believe that there is a literal heaven reserved for the believers who
will share eternity eith God. (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1- Revelation 22)

E. CONCLUSION
2 Timothy 2:15 commands, “Do your best to present yourself to God as
one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who
correctly handles the word of truth.” As we spend time to study and
understand what we believe in, we will be able to defend our faith in Him
and share to others the truths that we have known.

E. CONCLUSION:
Success is associated with a strategy that allows man to maximize his
potential in reaching the vision God has given to him. This strategy is
God-given. Just as God has given specific instructions to the people He
has called to do His will, like Noah, Moses, Abraham, and Joshua, God
has given the strategy for us to do His will of winning souls and making
disciples. All we need is to do is devote time to listen to His voice, to
obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and to implement this divine
strategy.

Lesson 3
Cells for Growth
A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to understand the importance of cell (CARE) groups in
the overall vision of The Living Word Fellowship.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, each student should be able to:
1. Understand what cells groups are and their importance in church
growth.
2. Know the Biblical foundation of cells groups.
3. Be encouraged to belong to a cell group meeting within the week.
4. Be motivated to someday or soon become a cell group leader, or
to be trained/mentored as one.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION: Acts 2: 42-47; 20:20-21

D. THEME EXPOSITION:

1. The Definition of Cell Groups

a. Cell groups are small groups of people who meet once a

week, usually in a home, primarily to study the Word of God
so that the unbeliever will be won to Christ and the believer
discipled or edified.
43
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

b. It is a place where members can develop, grow, and receive

support.

b. Cell groups are comprised of the following:

● The Host - the person who provides the place for the meeting
● The Leader – the person trained to lead/pastor the cell
● The Assistant Leader – the person who assists the leader
● The Members – every regular attendee, visitor, and first-time
guest

2. Cell Groups in the Bible

● The original church was founded in the home of the believers. It
was God's strategy for the church.

● Acts 5:42 – “And daily in the temple and in every house, they did
not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”

● Acts 2:44-47 - “Now all who believed were together, and had all
things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided
them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one
accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate
their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having
favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those
who were being saved. “

● 1 Corinthians 16: 19 – “The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila

and Priscilla greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their
house.”

3. The Importance of Cell Groups

a. The success of the church is in the cells.

b. Cells facilitate one-on-one pastoring.

c. Pastoral work becomes easier.

44
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

d. Cells are the backbone of the church.

e. Cells close the “back door” of the church.

f. Cells are the mine where leaders come from.

E. CONCLUSION:
The importance of cell groups and belonging to on can never be
overemphasized. Now that you know the benefits of being in a cell
group, join one if you are not a member yet. Coming to a Sunday
worship service is not enough. You need a group where you will grow,
develop, receive and give support and eventually be a cell group leader
yourself.

4. The GOAL of every cell meeting is to win souls and make

disciples!

E. CONCLUSION:
The cell is not just a meeting to go to regularly, it is a place where people
grow together in the Lord, where lives are changed, and where members
commit to being there for each other.

51
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

E. CONCLUSION
It is true that God has given us the vision and strategy to win souls for
His Kingdom, but this does not mean that we will do it in an improvised
way. Throughout the Bible, we see God choosing people (like Moses,
Joseph, Abraham) to fulfill the vision He had for them, but He also called
them to a time of preparation. God desires that we are full and wholly
prepared for His use as stated in 1 Thessalonians 5:23: “May God
Himself, the God of pace, sanctify you through and through. May your
whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ. The one who call you is faithful and he will do it.”

Lesson 6
Starting Your First Cell Group
A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to be equipped to start his first cell group.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, each student should be able to:
1. Understand the strategy of starting his first cell group.
2. Start his first cell group after Level 2 of School of Leaders.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you
will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to
the ends of the earth. “ Acts 1:8 (NIV)

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and
bear fruit – fruit that will last.” (John 15:16)

D. THEME EXPOSITION:
a. The goal of the vision: to make every believer a leader
soul winner and disciple maker).
b. The strategy of the vision: Open Cells (evangelistic cells) and
G12 structure (leadership cells).

c. The process of the vision: Ladder of Success: win, consolidate,

disciple, send

How to Start a Cell

● Attend Encounter and School of Leaders.

● Let he vision of the cell strategy be birthed in your heart.

● If there are groups currently going in your church, be an active part

of a group for at least six months.

● Volunteer to be an apprentice in that group when possible.

● Experience the call and desire to lead a group.

● If married, be in agreement with your spouse.

53
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● Speak with your pastor, minister of small groups, or group leader

about your desire.

● Pray and recruit people (at least four) from your circle of
influence. If you are starting a new group, recruit 2-3 couples or 4-6
singles who will help to establish the core of your group. Recruit
aggressively at each Sunday celebration, midweek meeting, church
social gathering, etc. Invite friends and family members.

● Pick a day and time convenient with those you have invited.
Sometimes it’s a good idea to start with a pot bless gathering and then
cast the vision of meeting regularly as a group.

● Decide as a group on the day, time, and place of your regular cell
meeting.

● Identify possible apprentice(s) and begin to invest in them.

● Continue to recruit new members at every available occasion.

E. CONCLUSION:
It is God’s plan for every person to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus
and grow in his faith so that he in turn can introduce Jesus to others.
This starts with winning the person to Christ and retaining him in the
faith. The best way to nourish and take care of a new believer is in a cell
group. Starting one is an obedience to the Great Commission.

Lesson 7
The Methodology For A Cell
A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to understand the Ladder of Success and acquire
55
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

the ability to win, consolidate (retain), disciple (train), and

eventually send (commission) people in their cells.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, each student should be able to:
1. Improve his skills in winning souls.
2. Know how to keep those persons who have been won to Christ.
3. Know how to build up the members of the cell group.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
- Matthew 28:19,20 (NIV)

E. THEME EXPOSITION:
The PROCESS/METHOD through which we win souls and make
disciples is through the LADDER of SUCCESS which has four steps:

1. WIN through your open cell group:

● The American Church Growth surveyed 10,000 people and found

that they came to church in the following ways:
o Evangelistic crusade - 1%
o Has a special need - 2%
o Program - 3%
o Walk-in - 4%
o Sunday School - 5%
o Pastor - 6%
o Friend/relative - 79%**

● **This shows that your friends and relatives are still best won to
the Lord by someone they already know – YOU.

● Generally, people will not accept Someone whom they do not

know from someone they do not know.

a. Prayer For Three

● List three friends or family members or co-workers that you want

saved.

56
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

b. Prayer Of Three
● Meet with three other believers from your cell group, and pray for
one hour each week, for four weeks, solely for the people that are in
your “Prayer for Three” list.

c. Net Event
● Decide as a cell to hold a monthly casual gathering of the cell
members where the unsaved are invited for fellowship, fun and food
(barbecues and potlucks are effective).
● During the event, find an opportunity to share Christ (someone can
give a testimony and relate it to salvation), and invite them to your cell
group.

d. One-On-One Soulwinning

1) Reach out with compassion and sensitivity.

o For one-time, short-time encounters (playground, bus, MRT, etc.)
✔ Have brief introductions and explore possibilities of further
encounters.
✔ Give out handbill (Living Word flyer and Gospel message on the
back).
o For multiple, long-term encounters
✔ Establish a friendship relationship.
✔ Focus on the person’s personal needs as a stepping stone to his
conversion.
▪ Know the needs of the person in order to meet them through
Christ.
▪ Extend acts of kindness to the one you want to share Christ to.
▪ These acts of kindness should be sincere and not a way to “bribe”
them into believeing in Christ.
✔ Present the Gospel in a casual, friendly manner.
▪ Rely completely on the Holy Spirit

▪ Ask questions.

⮚ Use questions that reveal their knowledge of God and their

religious practice.
⮚ Ask questions at the right time
to make it a natural flow of the conversation.
▪ Prioritize and focus on the establishment of a personal
relationship with Christ; don’t get side tracked by side issues.

57
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

⮚ Focus on the blessings of accepting Christ – God’s love and

purpose for his life; guidance towards a meaningful life; provision and
protection for his family.
⮚ Do not immediately point out….
i.Roman Catholic or other religious practices (graven images, rosary, etc)
ii.Vices – smoking, drinking, disco
iii.Obvious sinful involvements - adultery, prostitution, etc.
▪ Avoid using theological terms or difficult words the person will not
understand.
▪ Do not merely quote or read passages from the Bible; let the
person read the passages.
▪ Maintain a friendly atmosphere by avoiding:
⮚ Controversial and divisive issues/doctrines.
⮚ Arguments over trivial and distracting matters.
⮚ Unfriendly parting.
▪ Be courteous and humble. Do not project “holier than thou”
attitude.
▪ Never lose your temper.
▪ Don’t be in a hurry.
▪ Ask the person to pray with you. Difficulties can disappear in
prayer , and many stubborn people yield when they are brought into the
presense of God.

▪ Be sure to consolidate the person who receives Christ.

2) Master the plan of salvation, and stick with it as much as

possible. - A MUST!

Mastering the Plan of Salvation:

Every believer who desires to share Christ to others must know the plan
of salvation by heart. Although the presentation will vary, the following
four truths must be integrated in the presentation.

1. All have sinned – Romans 3:23

▪ Because of sin, man is separated from God and as a result, we
have become spiritually dead – Romans 6:23

2. God loves us and provided for a way for us to be reconciled back

to Him by having Jesus die for our sins – John 3:16; I Cor. 15:;
Romans 5:8
▪ Jesus is the only way back to God – John 14:6

58
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

3. We must confess our sins and repent – I John 1:9; Isaiah 1:18

4. We need to accept Christ into our lives as Savior and Lord –

Romans 10:9,13; Rev. 3:20,

In summary, it is your goal to have the person you are witnessing to

come to these realizations:
1. I am a sinner.
2. I realize I need a Savior.
3. I confess and forsake my sins.
4. I accept Christ in my life.

REMEMBER: Prayer is to go along with whatever strategy you

employ!

2. CONSOLIDATE – Follow Up
Whenever you win someone for Christ, it is your responsibility to care for
the new believer. It is like giving birth to a baby and looking after and
taking after that baby.

a. Spend time regularly with the new believer to encourage him and
help him grow as a Christian.

b. Show the new believer how to take care of hisnew-found faith so he

is able to grow .

b. Develop a strong friendship with the new believer, and encourage

him
to be a part of your cell group and church.

c. Encourage them to attend church and cell regularly.

d. Encourage them to attend the Encounter.

e. Consolidation involves “pastoring” the members of the cell.

▪ Call the newcomer within 48 hours.
▪ Call the regular comer at least once a week.
▪ Visit them.
▪ Be concerned about their needs.
▪ Guide them.

59
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

▪ Make time to listen them.

▪ Pray for them consistenly and regularly (at least once a week).
▪ Love them.

3. DISCIPLE – Teach them the Word of God and help

them get rooted in it.

a. Teach them the Word with passion and conviction.

b. Incorporate the basics of Christian growth.
c. Always show how Biblical principles taught can be applied in
their daily lives.
d. Encourage the members to attend cell and church regularly.
e. Encourage them to attend the School of Leaders.

4. SEND - Help them discover their skills, talents, and gifts and
guide them into using these gifts and finding their place of
ministry. Train the members and raise them up (mentor).
f. Help them discover their gifts.
g. Guide them in knowing what ministry the Lord wants them in.
h. Teach them to become leaders (persons of influence).

i. Be with them the first few times (or as long as needed) when they
exercise their ministry.
j. Continually encourage them to go on inspite of mistakes.
k. Most of all, pray for and with them.

E. CONCLUSION:
Three victories to win the war for a soul:
● Win them to you.
● Win them to Christ.
● Win them to your cell group and church.

Lesson 8
Leading Discussion In A Cell
A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to learn how to lead discussions in a cell.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, each student should be able to:
1. Know how to lead discussions.
2. Know other guidelines that will help him lead a cell.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct,
rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction.” 2
Timothy 2 (NIV)

D. THEME EXPOSITION:
● The goal of every cell meeting is winning souls to Christ and
making disciples.
61
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

o This goal is achieved not only during the cell meeting but
outside of the cell meeting as we establish relationships with each cell
member.
o But a bulk of the winning and discipling process happens
during the sharing of the Word in a cell meeting. It is very
important therefore that the leader is preapred to handle
the sharing of the Word.
a. Guidelines for leading a discussion in a cell meeting:
● Serve as a facilitator, not a lecturer. Your goal is to attract
personal interaction and self-discovery. Avoid pitfalls of being overly
directive or too passive.

● Focus on what Scripture has to say - and not what you have to
say as the leader. Point members to Scripture and allow the Holy Spirit
to make application according to each member’s needs.

● Maintain an atmosphere of love and acceptance which will lead

to open discussion. Never put down a person’s comment or
contribution.

● Ask open-ended questions which have several possible answers

and which can’t be answered by a simple “yes” or “no.”

● Encourage involvement by calling on non-participants by name to

respond. This also helps control the “overly” talkative.

● Stimulate discussion by active feedback to responses such as:

o Acknowledging responses whenever you can.
o Asking follow-up questions to clarify too-general or “vague”
response.

● Deal with wrong responses and comments by asking the other

members, “What do you think?” or “Does everyone agree?” Make sure
the correct answer/principle is clear and understood by everybody.
Never tell a person he is wrong. This kills an open discussion
atmosphere.

● Do not talk down to your members by asking, “do you get it” or
“do you understand?” If you need to check if they are understanding the
discussion, ask “Is there anything that is not clear?”

62
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● If a new issue is raised, acknowledge it but suggest that it be

discussed later until you finish your present discussion.

● Encourage application by asking, “What should we do differently

as a result of this discussion?”

● Summarize the main ideas that are presented to help keep the
group focused.

b. Other Guidelines to Remember

● All members share equally in the meeting. No one is to dominate
the discussion.
● Sharing should follow the general rules of brevity, appropriateness
and courtesy.
● Refrain from storytelling that is not relevant to the lesson being
discussed.

c. Other Methods of Leading the Cell

● Question and Answer
● Buzz Groups/Group Discussion
● Brainstorming
● Panel
● Interview
● Case Studies
● Circle Response

E. CONCLUSION
As a discussion leader, always remember the goal of your cell meeting –
to win a soul to Christ and to edify those who already know Jesus as
their Savior. Teaching the cell or leading the discussion is not to show
how much you know; it is to plant the seeds of God’s Word into
someone’s heart that will bring conviction and encouragement into that
person’s heart which will eventually bring change in that person’s life in
the power of the Holy Spirit.

Lesson 9
Resolving Problems In A Cell
A. OBJECTIVE:
For each student to acquire the ability to solve problems that may arise
in the cell group.

B. GOALS:
At the end of the class, each student should be able to:
1. Detect and identify any problem that will arise in the cell group.
2. Know how to resolve a specific problem in the cell group.

C. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to
all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he
must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the
sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:5-6 (NIV)

E. THEME EXPOSITION:
● A problem can be used by the enemy to discourage and bring
us down.
● The cell leader and members should be prepared anytime to
detect and identify any problem that arises in the cell. 1 Peter 5:8

64
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● A cell group is made up of people different from each other.

● Any abnormal situation of anyone can affect the whole group.

a. Most Common Problems in the Cell

● Lack of Commitment
● Spiritual coldness/lukewarmness
● Lack of Discipline in Time
● Murmuring
● Cell is stagnant (not growing in number)
● “Boring” Meetings
● Teaching is too long
● The teacher is not prepared
● Personal Issues

● Gossip

b. Guidelines for Solving Problems: Joshua 7 – A Case Study

● Detect and identify the problem (vv.1-5).

65
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

● Seek God and intercede (vv. 6-9).

o Seek God’s guidance; search for divine direction.
o Avoid acting in your own strength or trusting in your own ability.
● Wait for God’s direction (vv. 10-15).
o When we genuinely seek God’s direction, He reveals something
specific for us to do.
o Avoid acting in your own strategy or trusting in your own ability.
● Obey (vv.16-18).
o Do God’s leading and direction.
● Consult the leaders.

c. Ten Commandments for the Cell*

Problems are a reality of life, but the following can help prevent
problems from arising in the cell.

1. Love and embrace the cell vision.

2. Do not deviate from the cell vision.
3. Meet once a week.
4. Assist in family restoration.
5. Make every member a leader.
6. Keep watch over the holiness of the group.
7. Do not work on somebody else’s foundation.
8. Do not allow murmuring within the cell group.
9. Do not allow your cell group to be fruitless.
10. Work on goals strategically.
*Cesar Castellanos, Vision.

E. CONCLUSION
The key is for you to understand that there is no problem too big for God
and that if you will seek Him and look for His direction you will be able to
resolve any conflict. It is also important to understand that a problem is

66
Jesus The River Of Life Gospel Church, School of Leaders

an opportunity for you to trust God, draw close to Him and grow in your
faith as you mature and develop into the person God meant you to be.
