CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2

virus. Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and
recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require
medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop8 serious
illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
From the confines of their homes, teachers and administrators were put to the task of
revising and adapting course syllabi and requirements as they shifted to alternative or remote
teaching modalities, both synchronous and asynchronous. Where students and teachers had
access to electronic devices and reliable Internet connections, learning managements systems
such as Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, and applications like Google Hangouts, Zoom and Skype,
were used. But where students had limited access to computers or unreliable access to the
Internet, teachers and students used smartphones to exchange messages, notes and materials,
through text messaging, e-mail, Facebook Messenger, and Twitter.
The closure of schools and social isolation implemented globally can result in sudden
anxiety among teachers (Talidong & Toquero)Teachers are transitioning through an uncertain
period in terms of their professional (Allen et al., 2020) and personal lives. Apart from the
obvious risks to physical health, the psychological impact of COVID-19 also carries significant
threats and dangers to mental health and well-being as higher levels of anxiety and stress are
further exacerbated by the on-going uncertainty of the situation. Moreover, aside from the
conceivable stresses teachers face regarding the threat of COVID-19 to themselves and their
families, they are forced to transition into the new normal in the educational landscape and
undertake effective remedial education (Guillasper et al., 2020; Moralista & Oducado, 2020).
Teachers may not necessarily have the technologies, resources, and competencies that they
need to engage and succeed in this new modality of teaching.
In 2020, schools globally were fully closed for an average of 79 teaching days, while the
Philippines has been closed for more than a year, forcing students to enroll in distance learning
modalities.Given that face-to-face classes are not allowed, DepEd is pursuing various distance
learning delivery modalities. When Albay was placed under the modified general community
quarantine (MGCQ) status last June, They immediately repacked and distributed relief goods to
her students, along with some reading materials so that they could continue learning. Teachers
bought everything using their own savings. Before the health crisis struck the country, teachers
needed to take three rides just to report to her school which is 13.5 kilometers away from the
Daraga town proper. They said she had to endure the long travel which took away precious time
from attending to the needs of her husband and two children.
The impact of Covid-19 are cause many prooblems not just to students but also to
teachers.Hence, this study is designed to investigate the problems encountered of teachers
during pandemic and how they overcome ro this situation.
