An elementary school (SD Muhammadiyah Belitong) needs ten students to open a new class. If the student is not enough, that school will be closed. Mr. Harfan (Ikranagara) as a headmaster and Miss Muslimah (Cut Mini) can only collect nine students until afternoon. Suddenly, Harun (Jeffry Yanuar) comes with his mother. He becomes a hero for that school and the other students, because of his arrival the class can opened. The ten students get group name Laskar Pelangi from Miss. Muslimah. The all students study happily and enthusiastically though the school building is broken. There are special students in SD Muhammadiyah, they are Lintang (Geofani) and Mahar (Veris Yamarno). Lintang has a special ability in all of subject matter especially Math, and Mahar has a special ability in art and music. There is a lot of challenge that the students must face to defend that school and to get their dream. This film tells about friendship between the members of Laskar Pelangi . Besides that, it also shows the parents struggle to fulfill daily needs, and their children help them when the school is holiday. The most important in this film is the struggle of the students to keep survives for study in their school. The entertain part in this film is the calf love between Ikal (Zulfani) and A Ling. The story is simple and not different with the no vel so the spectator who had read the novel feels satisfied. This film takes place in Belitong and shows the Seventieth period, so when we read the novel and watch the film our imagination is not really different. The performance of the actor, especially the kids, looks so natural because they are Belitong

inhabitant. Although they are not a movie star like Cut Mini and the others, but their performance can stun the spectator. There is a character addition in this film that does not mention in the novel, that is Pak Mahmud (Tora Sudiro), but it doesn t change the main story. The different story in this film is when Pak Mahmud distributes calculator in Math class. It makes me think, Does it really happen in that era? But, generally this film is great. Watching it can make we laugh and cry. Laskar Pelangi is a good film for all age. This film shows how important education is. Even though the economic situations does not support, it cannot be a reason to give up for getting their (the students) dream. When the other films show romantic and horror story, this film can give other choice. A lot of moral value can we get by watching it. **** (out of *****)
