DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES

6 MONTHS: Motor: lifts chest and abdomen off the couch Rolls over from prone to supine Adaptive: grasps his feet and brings it to mouth Language: smiles & vocalizes at self in the mirror Monosyllabic babble Social: may show stranger anxiety 7 MONTHS: Motor: rolls over from supine to prone Sits briefly with support of pelvis Adaptive: reaches out for large objects & grasps Transfers object Takes all objects to mouth Palmar grasp Language: polysyllabic sounds Social: pats image of self in mirror Resists if toy pulled from hand Vision & Hearing: turns head towards sound above the lev el (7-9 months) 8 MONTHS: Motor: sits alone with back straight Cruises Adaptive: uncovers hidden toy Attempts to retrieve fallen toy Language: combines syllables, says mama or dada Social: plays peek-a-boo Waves bye-bye Responds to sound of name 9 MONTHS: Motor: stands holding onto furniture While sitting can lean forward Adaptive: grasps object with thumb & forefinger Brings two cubes together as if comparing Language: babbling with many syllables, mimicking native language Social: puts arm in front of face to prevent mother from washing face If a ball dropped is not seen, persist in searching, finding objects hidden under a cloth or behind parents or examiners back (object constancy)

RED ALERTS: Lewis R First & Judith S Palfrey (1994) Motor development: not able to - sit without support by 7 -8 months - stand holding on by 9-10 months Fine motor development: does not -hold an object in each hand by 7 months -absence of pincer grasp by 10-11 months Language development: does not -say da or ma by 8-9 months -say dada or mama by 10-11 months Psychosocial development: -child should laugh in play situations before 6 -8 months -should be easy to console & should not stiffen while crying by the age of 1 year Cognitive development: -does not reach for dropped objects by 6 -7 months -is not interested in peek-a-boo game by 8-9 months -shows no interest in searching hidden ob jects by 12 months.
