COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND ITS IMPACT TO PUPILS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN

CABANGAHAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

I. Introduction
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) originated in Wuhan, China. It is an
infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the
virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without
requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require
medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely
to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously
ill or die at any age. It is now spread across six continents and in more than a hundred
countries. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused an extraordinary
crisis that affects educational systems over the world.
There is an old saying that goes, "Education is the only inheritance which nobody
can take away from you." Our elders have always emphasized the importance of
education in one’s life, no matter how dire one’s circumstances in life are. Some
people put a premium on it to uplift their quality of life. This old saying was never
truer than when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in our country. Students still
continued with their studies despite economic and physical setbacks brought about by
the pandemic. The Philippine educational system has identified different modalities to
cater learners' education in times of pandemic.
Education plays a pivotal role in producing qualified human power that
accelerates economic development and solves the real problems of a community.
COVID-19 brings chaos to the Philippine educational system. This results in a
regression and a wide learning gap in the learners' academic performance, especially
in reading and numeracy.

II. Counter Argument

The COVID-19 pandemic had a positive impact on the emotional aspects of
learners' lives because family members had more time to support their child's
education as a facilitator of learning at home. Best practices were also developed,
such as supporting the independent learning of a child and providing support for
educational needs at home as parents' involvement was developed.
III. Your Argument
COVID-19 results in regression and wide learning gap, some learners lost interest
in learning for the reason that some parents don’t have enough knowledge to
support the learners educational needs.
