5. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Considerable number of Nokia Base Station Radio Modules are replaced and returned to Nokia
Hardware Services which are then recovered merely by a SW update at the repair center.

Restoring the Radio Module to its original factory settings, provides a viable onsite recovery
step potentially preventing unnecessary unit swap for repair.

Restore Factory Settings application for Radio Modules shall be utilized whenever the regular
recovery procedures (e.g. block/unblock, resets, reconfiguration, SW download) are not
possible or they do not recover the Radio Module from fault state.

6. QUICK GUIDE

Scenarios where restore factory setting can help:

a) Problems during installation and commissioning, example HW exchange

b) SW mismatch between different kind of modules
c) Failure during SW update
d) Commissioning is going wrong or not possible
e) Deletion of double target ID

Prepare Restore Factory Settings application

1) Deflate Restore Factory Settings delivery package to local directory (e.g. C:\Temp), if not
done yet
2) PC's network properties shall be specified to match the following settings:
IP address as 192.168.255.126 (192.168.255.130 for 2G FSMF)
Subnet mask as 255.255.0.0. Disable/enable LAN adapter to make sure new settings are
taken in use.
3) Prepare target SW release to be available (in zip format).

Prepare FSM and RFM(s) unit for restore procedure

4) Power up FSM
5) Connect LMP cable - check ping response at 192.168.255.129/192.168.255.131
6) Connect BTS Site manager – observe RFM’s in Hardware view.

Start recovery

7) Collect data from BTS

8) Select RFM(s) to be restored
9) Select target SW release
10) Confirm to execute recovery

To install target SW for both partitions, recovery procedure needs to be run twice.

For typical recovery scenario, refer for more information at chapter 8.

7. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

7.1 WHAT DOES IT DO

With the Restore Factory Settings application, Flexi Multiradio Radio Module is restored into
factory delivered condition from SW management point of view. Restore tool does not
conduct any HW analysis/diagnostics.

Effectively the Restore Factory Settings application deletes the files from the memory
partition, from where the Radio Module start up is attempted, and restores it to an ideal state
with user selected target SW release.

Restore procedure is independent of any BTS HW or SW configuration, thus it can be executed

for BTS site without removing the Flexi Multiradio Radio Module.

After each recovery procedure execution, a log file is created.

7.2 WHEN TO USE IT

The following are examples of fault states, restore factory settings procedure is expected to
recover Radio Module from – unless the fault is caused by more severe HW or SW failure.

1) A problem happened during installation/commissioning phase when new/replacement

unit has been installed to network.

Recovery procedure will update BTS SW to Radio Module. There is no need to remove RFM
from BTS Site in order to attempt recovery.

2) SW mismatches between different Flexi BTS HW modules. SW download progress may

not start at all or is partly downloaded to BTS but not completely. BTS SW will refuse to
allow any further actions. Power may have been switched off-on between upgrade
attempts and BTS cannot fully recover.

Recovery procedure removes existing BTS SW configuration and will upload and flash new
BTS SW files to RFM memory. Also check FSM SW configuration and check the need to
System Module recovery.

7.3 WHEN NOT TO USE IT

Restore Factory Settings application is a SW update tool merely. The application does not
make any analysis on reported alarm history or events stored to RFM or FSM unit.

In case of more severe fault, restore procedure may be concluded successfully. However, it is
likely that the more severe fault state may not recover. Radio module is set to factory
settings only from SW management point of view.

1) No ping response at 192.168.255.129 / 192.168.255.131

Recovery procedure cannot be started in case TCP connections cannot be created

towards Flexi System Module at 192.168.255.129 (WCDMA or LTE BTS scenario) or
192.168.255.131 (2G BTS scenario).

2) RF Module is not detected by Flexi System module

RFM is required to be fully detected by Flexi System Module so that necessary

identification and recovery procedure can be executed. In case RFM does not show up in
BTS Hardware view in BTS Site manager, recovery procedure cannot work on the
particular module.

3) Fault ID that can be connected to more severe failure is reported

Refer to existing BTS alarm documentation / BTS Site Manager Online Help for further
information on BTS fault descriptions and to be able identify fault ID’s that are caused by
real HW failure.

Typically 1907, 1908, 1910 and 1920 cannot be cleared with SW update.

4) Despite of successful recovery procedure, Fault ID is reported again and BTS

functionality / service is affected

Since restore application does not make analysis during RFM during recovery session, it is
possible that problem situation can reproduce after RFM unit has been once restored. In
this case further troubleshooting activities are needed to identify possible product SW
problem / HW failure. Radio RFS does not fix false alarms generated by RF SW.

8.2 TIME REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE PROCEDURE

Typically about 20 minutes is required for Restore Factory Settings application to complete
radio module recovery.

Make sure that RFS tool application can execute completely without any interruptions. In case
of accidentally interrupted session it is anyway worth trying again.

Switching power off-on between attempts may cause unrecoverable condition to radio
module.

8.3 BTS PREPARATIONS

There is no need to remove the radio module or any of the power/optical cabling in the
existing BTS setup when using restore tool. Recovery is performed on selected radio
module(s) only. Therefore, the other Flexi BTS modules can remain in the hardware
configuration.

Connect RF modules to Flexi System module. Modules can be connected to any FSM
 ESMB/C & FSMF running GSM BTS SW
