INFORMATION SHEET 1.2-1
CHARACTERISTICS OF A SUITABLE SITE

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

1. Identify the Characteristic of a suitable site

Introduction:

Farmers considering building facilities on their farms must give

considerable through to the location of the new structures. Today, poultry
farmers must be aware of concerns related to (1) environmental issues like
water quality, odors and flies, litter applications on fields and high soil
phosphorous levels; (2) nearby neighbors and public areas like churches,
parks and businesses; and (3) laws and regulations that affect farming
operations. Future poultry farmers must place greater emphasis on
farmstead planning than has been done in the past. Considerations in site
selection for buildings must include utilities, roads, topography, prevailing
winds, existing buildings, neighbors, public areas, setbacks, and state and
federal government laws and regulations.

Neighbors – The location of nearby homes should be the number one

consideration when evaluating potential locations for poultry facilities. Good
neighbors can quickly become enemies if the building site is too close to
nearby homes. Some poultry companies require prospective poultry farmers
to discuss building plans with their neighbors before construction starts.
Even if discussions with neighbors are not required, this practice is
recommended. Reaction from neighbors may force alternate sites to be
chosen.

Setbacks – How far should poultry houses be set back from

residences, property lines, public areas, public roads, streams, wells,
sinkholes and flood plains?

Topography – Whether the site is level, gently rolling or hilly will

determine the amount of grade work that must be done to get a level area
for the buildings. Grade work can add substantially to the total construction
cost. Avoid low-lying areas near streams with flooding potential. Preferably,
the topography will allow the long axis of the poultry house to be located in
an east-west direction. This helps to minimize the amount of direct sunlight
that would enter through the sidewalls of the houses.

Storm Water – Adequate drainage for storm water control must be

considered because of the large amount of roof area. Storm water runoff
should not be allowed to create erosion problems around the houses. Grass-
covered water run-off ditches will help reduce potential erosion problems.
The immediate area outside the buildings must have sufficient slope to keep
runoff water out of the buildings.
Prevailing Wind – Prevailing wind direction must be considered when
wind currents flow from the chicken house toward any residence. Odors
from poultry houses must be given adequate time and distance to dissipate
before reaching a residence. The distance from the poultry house location to
any residence would need to be greater if prevailing winds were toward the
residence. Since poultry companies require mechanical ventilation in all
poultry houses; locating the poultry house to take advantage of prevailing
wind direction for natural ventilation is no longer important.

Wind Shed – Wind shed is a term which describes wind flow pattern
on the downside of an existing building. To help minimize complaints by
neighbors, strong consideration must be given to keep nearby homes out of
the windshed area.

Utilities – Some questions about utilities must be answered to help

determine building site location. Is electricity readily available or will the
local electric utility run new lines at a reasonable cost? Is water available
from wells or a municipal water system or both? It is important to have a
backup water system. Is the quality and quantity of the well water suitable
for a poultry operation? Is propane and/or natural gas available at
competitive prices?

Roads – The condition of public roads must be adequate to allow feed

trucks, chick- delivery vehicles and live-haul trucks access to the buildings
during all times of the year. Are there any weight limits or bridges that
would restrict access to the farm? How much will it cost to construct an
access road from the public road to the buildings? Can the heavily loaded
trucks travel easily on the access road in all types of weather?

Future Expansion – Does the potential building site allow the

possibility for further expansion? Often a poultry farmer will start with two
houses and want to build an additional two houses at a later time.
Other Buildings – The building site needs to have adequate land area
available for other buildings, such as dead-bird composting and litter
storage. These buildings should be out of public view if possible. The
buildings need to be located close enough to the production facilities to
minimize travel time, but far enough away to reduce possible disease
transmission. A distance of about 100 feet is a reasonable compromise.

Proper siting of new poultry facilities is extremely important. Problems

can result if facilities are built in unfavorable locations. The best time to
handle potential problems is BEFORE they occur. Proper planning will help
prevent environmental problems from occurring, and will save time, money
and headaches in the long run.

Site selection requirements for laying hens

The site selection of the laying hen farm is to facilitate the production
and operation, convenient transportation, good epidemic prevention
conditions and low investment. It is necessary to consider the requirements
of the chicken production for the surrounding environment, and to meet the
environmental quality standards of the poultry farm. The impact of the smell
and dirt generated by the chicken farm on the surrounding environment. It
is in line with the regulations on pollution prevention and control of
livestock and poultry breeding, meets the requirements of prevention and
control measures for laying hens (such as all-in, all-out, regional isolation,
etc.), adheres to the principle of combining agriculture and animal
husbandry, and the balance of planting and breeding, according to the land
surrounding the field. The ability of chicken manure to absorb. The manure
sewage treatment facilities with corresponding processing capacity are in
line with the biological characteristics and behavioral habits of the flock.
There should be sufficient stocking area around the free-range egg tart field,
good vegetation cover and Cordyceps.
Site selection requirements:

1. Topography

The laying hens should be selected in a place where the leeward is sunny,
the ventilation is dry, the terrain is high, and the drainage is good.

Plain area: choose high terrain and easy to drain.

Hilly area: choose the halfway up the mountain from the wind.

2. Epidemic prevention

To prevent the threat of skin diseases and pollution sources. There should
be no pollution sources for large-scale industrial and mining enterprises,
livestock and poultry slaughter processing plants and animal trading
markets around the chicken farm: the chicken farms and residential areas
and main traffic are 1000 meters away from each other.

3. Water source

The water source is sufficient and the water quality is good.

4. Power supply

The power supply of the chicken farm must be able to meet the production
needs, and the power supply must be guaranteed. Large chicken farms must
have dedicated lines or self-contained power generation equipment.

5. Transportation

Convenient transportation to meet the basic transportation requirements of

feed and products. The road surface should be level and there will be no
mud after the rain. If the site is built in a location with limited traffic, it is
necessary to consider in advance the road blockage and supply disruption
caused by heavy rain or heavy snow.

6. Soil quality requirements

The soil of the chicken farm is suitable for sandy loam soil. The soil is well
drained, the thermal conductivity is small, and the microorganisms are not
easy to breed. The soil is permeable and breathable, and can be kept dry,
suitable for vegetation growth and construction of chicken houses.

7. Air quality requirements

In order to ensure the feeding environment of the chicken, the air quality of
the site is guaranteed to meet the three-level standard of air quality.

8. Selection of poultry farming equipment

It is very important to choose a reliable poultry equipment suppliers

 To protect inclement weather, direct sunrays and rain.

 To minimize effect of dampness
 To provide safety from their predators
 To apply scientific management practices
 To provide suitable, atmosphere for expression of full genetic potential
Basis Principles to be observed for layout:

 Layout should not allow visitors (for office works) and outside vehicles
to come in contact with birds. From this, administrative block and
feed mill unit should be kept away from sheds on farm.

 The younger birds should be kept away from disturbances due to

movements of outsiders. For which brooder and grower houses are
preferably. Located at far end of site, away from administrative block
and mill unit.

 The houses should be necessarily placed on the upwind flow side to

avoid cross-infection from adults to youngers through air. In our
country for major part pf year, west is the upwind flow side.

 Feed mill is generally attached to medium and large size poultry farms
and preferably placed near gate.

Equipment Needed for Poultry Farming:

The choice of goof equipment is very important for a successful poultry farm.
Poultry farming business will use different types of equipment depending on
the size and type of poultry house. Perches, feed containers, watering
gadgets, heaters, foggers, baby chicken guards, laying houses, and brooding
hover are important examples of chicken house equipment. Let us check out
a few types of equipment needed for poultry farming.
Whether it is early-stage or later-stage, equipment is an integral part of the
production. If you are thinking of starting a poultry farm, equipment is also
needed for each cycle. There are many poultry tools available that are
essentials for successful poultry farming. Having all these tools will help you
to run your farm easily. Today, general or unemployed educated people from
many different countries are increasingly turning to poultry farming, as it is
one of the best sources of income.

Why do you need equipment for a poultry farm?

In this dispensation, it would be out of the thought that most of the farm
work would be done by manual labor. However, with the introduction of
machine tools and equipment on the farm, it is easier to work around the
farm. Below are some other reasons why you need poultry equipment.

 The equipment makes work easier and faster

 For large-scale farming, the use of agricultural implements will help

increase productivity. That means more sales.

 In addition, by using these add-ons, you can reduce labor for you as a
farmer.
Importance of poultry equipment for raising healthy chickens

Quality poultry equipment is essential for raising healthy chickens and

other chickens. Investing in poultry equipment is essentials to running a
successful poultry business that can deliver consistently high-quality
products.

Proper storage of Feed

To properly store your poultry feed, you should make sure that the feed is
kept at some distance from the poultry house. This way you can make sure
that your chickens, and/or insects, are not coming into the feed without
your knowledge. The use of feed storage silos is the most cost-effective way
to ensure that poultry feed is kept clean, dry, and pest-free.

Pan feeding systems

Pan feeding systems are innovative systems that weigh as much as gold
when considering poultry feeder options and prices. When using a pan
feeding system on your poultry farm you make sure;

 Use the latest design for better animal welfare

 Best feed conversion
 Easy feed access from starts to finish
 Using a feeding system that is accurate by providing clean, fresh feed
in quantity is an invaluable tool for obtaining poultry farms.

Advanced poultry farming equipment

The process of equipment and facilities in poultry production is required

between the processing og layer, broiler, and baby chickens. In our modern-
day, farmers can enjoy the latest farming tools;

Climate controllers – The temperature in poultry houses can vary

according to the weather conditions outside. Climate controllers send data
to farmers mobile device, which provides him with important data about
changes taking place inside the house.

C02 sensors - High levels of C02 can damage chickens and slow down their
metabolism. The sensor monitors c02 levels and lowers them to normal.

Lighting system - LED Lighting is designed specifically for poultry houses:

the right amount of light can reduce costs and improve productivity.

Weighing scales - Weighing scales provide farmers with important data on

the weight of birds. That way, farmers can follow the chickens, as they
become broilers.
Feeding Systems - Automated systems send the right amount of food
through feed'ng scale so birds are fed on time whether it's restricted feeding
or free feeding.

Egg counter - Egg counting has never been easier. Fortunately, the
counting tool can accurately count eggs without damaging them.

Equipment needed for poultry farming

Housing equipment
Housing depends on the type of poultry farming. Layers are kept in
battery cages, while broilers are kept in deep litter rooms. Some coup
boxes use the barn free-range system. It requires heating, ventilation, and
space.

Setter
This is a device used to maintain a proper temperature around the baby
chickens. It helps to equalize the humidity and bend for the first 1 g days of
the cycle. This helps to provide a comfortable environment for the baby birds
to settle. You can buy different types of setters from the market depending
on your location and price. This is a machine that provides adequate
temperature, humidity, and turning for the first 19 days of chicken eggs.
Brooder Machine
Brooder machines provide heat and electricity to the baby chickens.

Charcoal stove brooder/kerosene stove brooder

This Type of brooder machine is used where there is no electricity and is
preferred by those who use cheap poultry equipment. There is a charcoal
stove covered with a lid that provides heat near the stove and the baby
chickens to enjoy the heat.

Gas brooder
This Type of brooder is associated with natural gas, methane, and LPG. The
brooders are 3-5 feet above the baby chickens, providing them with both
warmth and light.

Infrared bulbs
These are self-reflecting bulbs with unique red lights. This light attracts
birds, and they gather beneath it to experience the heat. One of the
differences between these bulbs is that they have no reflectors. These
infrared bulbs are the most popular these days, not only because of their
affordability but also because they are amazingly effective. Industrial
chicken factories use large 250-watt bulbs to heat about 200 chickens. But
even small ones work to heat the flock.
Hatching equipment
Hatching equipment is essential when you prefer layers for egg production.
They are used to care for eggs after hatching.

Hatching egg tray

This is a tray that can hold 90-180 eggs at a time. This helps in storing the
eggs properly, where they are stored.

Hatching transfer machine

This machine helps to transfer eggs from the breeder farm to the hatching
tray. This helps in breaking the egg. And when the eggs are transferred to
the tray, they are safe end ready for market.

Watering equipment
Pan and jar
This is a very budget-friendly option and very easy for chickens to drink. All
you need to do is put a jug of water on top of pan, and that's it. The water
in the jar should reach the pan. Although it is not the most reliable option,
the smallest move or effect can take it down. If have tons of chickens,
you may want to go for an alternative.

Bell waterer
Using bell-shaped piece of plastic hanging along the pipeline, water will fall
on the pan. The great thing about this watercolor is the very low
investment .With just few bucks can build self-contained watering
system that is reliable and very efficient. You will need a piece of plastic,
spring mount valve, and a plastic drinker. It takes a while to collect, but ifs
worth the investment.

Nipple drinkers
You can use it for almost any type of housing, including cages and coops. It
is also quite easy to assemble but may require larger investment than
previous options. It's just nipple that lets water out permanently in small
portions throughout the day. This water falls on a cup or jar so that the
chickens can drink from it. People use it on all kinds of birds and other
animals, but it is most effective in small places like chicken coops.

Manual drinker
It is very similar to the jar and pan drinker, but it is fully assembled and
ready for the chickens to drink. All have to do is keep the drinker in place
and do nothing but come and drink. The best thing about this piece is that
can choose bright colors like red, blue, or yellow, which the hens like
nearby. You can also find them in many sizes, so can get more than one or
just one depending on your needs. Above all, giving vitamins and medicine
to chickens is a piece of cake with this piece.

Poultry feeding equipment

It is very important to feed the chickens regularly with the right number of
gains. Some of the feeders are;

Circular feeders
They are circular and carry 5-7 kg of grain time. The unique pop
colors attract baby chickens.

Automatic feeders
They are designed in auger type or chains that feed the birds directly into
their nests or sites.

Linear feeders
They are linear in shape with length of 2 meters made of Galvanized iron or
wooden and bamboo material.
