I. Objective:
Use be-verbs (am, is, are, was, were) correctly in sentences. (MELCs EN3G II-a-c-3.4)

III. Procedure:

A . Preparatory Activities:

1. Review: What are verbs?

2. Motivation: Showing pictures, Who is in the pictures?

B. Presentation: Reading the poem. Take note of the underlined words.

“My Family is a Worker”

My father is a firefighter,
Uncle Sam is a police officer,
Tito John is a soldier,
They protect people who are in danger.
Grandpa George was a farmer.
He was also an expert with agriculture.
Grandma Gina was a lawyer.
She also works as a professor.
Tita Lylia is a doctor,
Aunt Becky is an engineer,
My mother is a teacher,
And I want to be like her.
They were all hard worker,
They were smart and dedicated.
I am studying so hard,
So that someday I will become a teacher.
What are the underlined words in the poem?
C.Discussion:
The words am, is, are, was, were are called be- verbs.

Be-Verbs- indicate a state of being or existence. They do not show an action. They didn’t
give meaning, but they are used to described a subjects.

Be- Verbs for singular subjects am, is, was

Examples:

I am a boy. She is my friend He was jailed.

Be- Verbs for plural subjects are, were

Examples:
They are basketball players. The players were exhausted.

The following are the Be- Verbs:

Plural are were

Activity 1: Fill in the correct be- verb in the blank to make the sentence correct:

D. Generalization: What have you learned?

I have learned that be-verbs are verbs that indicate state of being. These words do not
show an action. They don’t give any meaning, but they are used to describe a subject.

For singular subjects- we used am and is in present tense and was in the past tense.

For plural subject- we use are in the present tense and were in the past tense.
