Reflections on Topics Discussed

During The 2021 INSET
March 15 to 19 2021

Facilitating professional training and learning opportunities is one of the roles of teacher leaders. If learning is
shared from one teacher to another, teachers can directly focus on the improvement of student learning. Each teacher
has different types of teaching and learning needs which are required to be addressed in aiming for effective teaching
especially now that we are in the “New Normal” in education. Professional development of teachers could be
enhanced through the conduct of different activities such as in-service trainings.

In-service training (INSET) is a school-based seminar workshop regarding the needs of all teachers in
improving their teaching methods, classroom management, upliftment of student-centered learning. The conduct of
INSET will also help us teachers keep up with the demands of the new normal through free professional development
training designed to provide us with essential knowledge and skills on digital literacy, blended learning, and 21st
century learning methods.

We have different topics discussed in the span of this five-day webinar which was a combination of School
based sessions and national based webinar training. Topics such diversity of learners simply means recognizing that
all the people are unique in their own way. Their differences could consist of their reading level, athletic ability,
cultural background, personality, religious beliefs, and the list goes on. As teachers, we must address the diversity of
our learners in order to ensure that the teaching and learning process in the new normal of education is achieved.

21st century competencies are integral for students to succeed as citizens in a globalized, technology-infused
world, which includes employability in highly skilled jobs. Using information and communication technologies (ICT)
learners can develop higher order thinking skills that intersect with 21st century competencies. By infusing ICT with
the curriculum holistically through instruction, assessment, and evaluation we teachers can create learning experiences
that connect to the world beyond the walls of classrooms.

One of the key features of our current curriculum is the delivery of lessons through localization and
contextualization. The principle of localization and contextualization is not new to DepEd teachers for it is already
embedded in our mission which states “To protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable,
culture-based, and complete basic education…” Also, the concept of localization and contextualization is being
stipulated in the provisions of our 1987 Philippine Constitution. The concept of localization and contextualization falls
on the idea that students learned best when experienced in the classroom have meanings and relevance in their lives.
As teachers, it is important that we contextualize and localize our teaching strategies and materials to maximize the
teaching and learning process.
