METHODOLOGY

Apparatus & Materials

Pipette, 400cm3 beaker, distilled water, filter paper, pétri dish, Buchner funnel, Buchner flask,
rubbertube, analytical balance, drying oven, hot plate, magnetic stir
bar,thermometer,aluminium solution,0.1M hydrochloric acid,2% solution of oxine (8-
hydroxyquinoline) in 2M acetic acid, solution of ammonium acetate.
Procedures
1. The first step included pipetting 10 cm3 of aluminium solution into a 400 cm* beaker
using a small tip. It was necessary to add about 150 cm3 of distilled water containing 1
cm3 of 0.1M HCI before the solution could be warmed to 60-70°C.
2. 20 cm3 of a 2 percent solution of oxine(8-hydroxyquinoline) in 2 M acetic acid was
slowly added, and a 2 M solution of ammonium acetate was progressively added until
a precipitate was produced.
3. Following that, a 25 cm3 of 2 M ammonium acetate was added to each 100 cm 3 of the
solution, where the colour should be slightly yellow at this point to show the presence
of oxine in a small amount of excess.
4. The liquid was allowed to stand for one hour while being constantly stirred. A
weighted No. 4 sintered glass crucible was used to filter the liquid afterwards.
5. It was necessary to wash the precipitate completely with cold distilled water before
drying it at 102-120°C, after which it was cooled and weighed.
6. The drying and weighing procedures are continued indefinitely until a consistent
weight is achieved.
7. The concentration of aluminium in the solution (g/dm3) was determined based on the
fact that aluminium oxide comprises 5.874 percent aluminium and the solution
includes aluminium.
