DR. HEATHER MCRAE:
University preparation courses provide a foundation for studies at the post-secondary
level through a review or introduction to concepts in English, math and science. More
importantly, they provide learners with increased self-confidence and skills relating to
time management, attention to detail, collaboration and critical thinking.
Given the rapid pace of technological change and its effect on our workforce, it
is becoming increasingly important to be a “continuous learner” and to embrace
skill development throughout one’s life. University preparation courses provide
the entrance to further education and ensure that students have the necessary
foundational learning needed to succeed in post-secondary programs.
Our classes are small, interactive and focused on the academic preparation skills
you need to assist you with achieving your goals related to further education and
employment. Staff can assist you through the registration process and provide
information related to funding support. We are here to support your educational
journey and your decision to improve your academic skills.
We acknowledge that the land on which we gather in Treaty Six Territory is the traditional
gathering place for many Indigenous people. We honour and respect the history, languages,

HOW TO APPLY
Step 1: Check your eligibility for the program
If you meet the requirements for the University Preparation (UP) program, apply
online at ApplyAlberta.ca. A non-refundable $110 application fee is required when
you apply.

Step 2: Track your application online
After you submit your application, you will receive a MacEwan network login to the
email account you listed on your application. This will be the username and password
you use to log in to myPortal.MacEwan.ca, where you can launch myStudentSystem
to view your admissions confirmation, accept your offer and pay your confirmation
deposit (if applicable).
Step 3: Placement and course registration
After you have been accepted into the program, a representative from the University
Preparation office will be in contact to discuss your educational plan, registration and
funding if needed.
Step 4: Getting started as a student at MacEwan
Once you are registered, visit MacEwan.ca/GettingStarted to help prepare yourself
for the start of classes and learn more about the School of Continuing Education
and MacEwan University. It is recommended that you become familiar with
myStudentSystem and your MacEwan email account when preparing for your studies.
Step 5: Academic advising
Our advising team is here to assist you with your education plan, answer your
questions about funding and guide you through your term registration. We can also
assist you with your post-secondary goals and career planning needs as you continue
your studies. Contact our office for more information.

LEARNER INCOME SUPPORT
Should you require financial assistance, you may be eligible for Learner Income
Support funding. In order to receive funding you must already be admitted into the
program and enrolled in classes.
Step 1: Check your eligibility
Check your full-time or part-time funding eligibility at:
alberta.ca/learner-income-support-and-skills-investment-bursary.aspx
Step 2: Apply to the program
If you are applying for funding, you must be an active student in the University
Preparation program. You can apply to University Preparation online at
MacEwan.ca/Preparation. A non-refundable $110 application fee is required
when you apply. Our office will be in contact with you once your application
has been assessed.
Step 3: Obtain the Training Provider Information (TPI) form
Once you are accepted into the program and registered in classes, you can request
the Training Provider Information (TPI) form for your funding application. An online
request form will be sent you in an email.
Step 4: Apply for funding
Complete a paper form or online funding application by visiting the website in Step 1.
Completed paper applications and the TPI Form must be submitted to the address
indicated on the application form.
NOTE: Students must apply a minimum of six to eight weeks in advance to be considered
for funding.

Step 5: Pay tuition and fees
Submit your funding decision to the program office as proof of tuition payment.

FOUNDATION PROGRAMS
Students who are interested in a combination of English language preparation,
academic upgrading and undergraduate courses for post-secondary admission may
want to consider one of the Foundation programs. These programs are uniquely
designed to help support students who are new to the post-secondary environment
and will benefit from the progressive pathway to their goal program. It also includes
the Foundation 101 course.
The Foundation 101 course helps students develop the critical skills needed to
be successful in a post-secondary environment such as strategies for studying,
organization, technology and how to manage student expectations.
The Alberta Foundation program is for domestic students and has funding available.
