A Detailed Lesson Plan in Oral Communication


Grade 11-Senior High School
October 24, 2022

Target Learners: Grade 11


Number of Hours: 1 Week (3 hours)

Grade Level Standards: The learner understands the nature and elements of oral
communication in context. The learner designs and performs effective controlled and
uncontrolled oral communication activities based on context.

Learning Competency: Distinguishes types of speeches and speech style


(EN11/12OC-lfj-17)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. Identify the types of speech styles;
b. Appreciate the function of the different speech style in
communication context; and
c. Apply and construct conversation passage using the different
types of speech style.
II. Subject Matter
Topic : Types of speech Styles
References : Oral Communication in Context for Senior High School
Learner’s Material.
Materials : Instructional materials, envelopes and markers.

Activity 1: Crossword Puzzle

Instruction: The teacher will call a student to find out the word under the
crossword puzzle which is related to the topic.
Words: Speech Style, classmates, doctor, party, wedding, teacher,
girlfriend and friend.
B. Lesson Proper
a. Activity 2 “ACT IT to LEARN IT”
Procedure
1. The teacher will group the class into five groups.
2. Each group will have a given situation and they will be going
to act on how are they going to communicate when they are
in that communication context.
3. They will act their given situation in a minimum of 4 minutes
and a maximum of 6 minutes.
Criteria:
Accuracy and believability of role- 10
Clarity of Speech- 10
Expression and Body Language- 10
Knowledge Gained- 10
Total= 40 points

c. Abstraction
Every people have different style when they express their
speech even they use the same language because style refers to
the way of how people speak. It means speech style is the distinct
variations or forms of the language used for the same purpose by a
particular situation or the form of language that the speaker uses.
Types of Speech Style
 Frozen Style
Frozen style is the most formal style of speech. It is usually
used for formal ceremony and official government events or
international meeting. In addition, it is characterized by long and
complex sentence, a scientifically vocabulary, and a consistently
serious tone. Grammatical rules are concerned, and the subject
matter is substantial.
 Formal Style
This style is lower than frozen style and commonly it is used
in formal situation, such as in office, school and when people meet
new people. It is generally used in a formal situation, where there is
the least amount of shared background knowledge and where
communication is one way with little or no feedback from the
audiences. It means that the vocabulary which is used in formal
style is also extensive, use standard speech, low tempo speech
and avoidance of the use of repetition. The speaker should frame
whole sentences and choose the words before they are delivered.
 Consultative Style
Consultative style is usually used in semiformal situation.
According to Joos, consultative style is a style that shows our norm
for coming to terms with strangers who speak our language but
whose personal stock of information may be different. It means that
these styles are thought formal enough but lower than formal style.
This style usually occurs and used in some group discussion,
school or trading buyer with seller.
 Casual Style

Casual style is defined as a style that is used for the
conversation in our relaxed or normal situation. People tend to use
this style when they have conversation with friends, family and
people who have close relationship. This style is usually applied in
daily conversation.
 Intimate Style
This style is completely private languages develop within
families, very close friends, couple, etc. Furthermore, intimate
language is also characterized by ellipsis, deletion, rapid, slurred,
pronunciation, nonverbal communication, and private code
characteristics.

d. Application
Activity 3 “WRITE TO LEARN”
Procedure:
1. The teacher will instruct the student to write a one conversation
passage presenting only one speech style.
2. The students are given the freedom to choose on what speech
styles they will going to use in making a conversation passage.
3. They will be graded in the following criteria

Criteria:
Organization of ideas- 20
Appropriate for the setting, attitude, tone of voice, facial
expressions and overall body language of the- 20

next session.
