Timeline of history of Philippine folkdance

During this period ,the people have already discovered


dancing. They danced to appease the gods, to curry favor from
Pre colonial period
powerful spirits, to celebrate a hunt or harvest ,to mimics the exotic
life forms around them .They are dancing to show stories and
shamantic rituals, their rites of passage and their remembered
legends and history.
Muslim traders reached Philippines in 14th century. They
created their own folkdances in the areas where they settled. Muslim
(ex. Singkil is on of the most famous dance created by Muslims. It Merchants
depicts the plight of a princess caught in a magical earthquake in
a forest.)

The dancers adapted imposed Christian belief and culture to


their own dances ,borrowing court choreography but imbuing it with
Spanish colonization Philippine spirit

(ex. Maria Clara , the pure and noble heroine of a novel who
represents the finest qualities of Filipino womanhood.
The revered folkdances from the lowlands ang the hill
tribes persist in their traditional form and in contemporary Folkloric
choreography for Philippine Ballet companies. Dance is still the
theater of identity for the Filipino people. Fusion

Traditional Dance is still performed at celebrations of births and


Modern Era weddings. Modern folkdances festivals still feature ancient dances
performed in costumes of the tribal period of the Philippines. They
are now using instruments such as “gangsa”(small copper gong),
“tobtob”(brass gong), or “Hibat” (a gong played with a soft wooden
stick
