FACTORS AFFECTING INATTENTIVENESS AMONG GRADE V PUPILS: BASIS FOR

MOTIVATIONAL STRATEGIES

Context and Rationale

When we speak of inattentiveness, the pupils are easily disturbed or not paying

attention. They are easily distracted with their environment. Some of them are unable to follow

instructions or directions and has difficulty on staying on task. Inattentive pupils are sometimes

disorganized and they appear confused. As a result, they asked a lot of questions because they

cannot understand what the teacher discussed (Kelly, 2015).

During the first quarter of the School Year 2019-2020, it was found out that 24 out of 34

(70.59%) Grade V-Trapezoid pupils were unable to submit their performance output in Araling

Panlipunan; 20 out of 34 (58.82%) were unable to make and submit their assignments; 27 out of

34 (79.41%) were not able to submit their projects on the prescribed deadline; and most of the

time the pupils asked to repeat the question because they were not able to hear it. The given

data was quite disturbing because the pupils become unfocused with their responsibilities and

tasked due to their inattentiveness. They cannot finish the task on time for they frequently asked

questions on how to do their output because they were not able to listen to the instructions.

It’s easy to become frustrated with inattentiveness behavior of the pupils in the

classroom. As Grade V pupils they are expected to have a longer attention span. They should

be able to finish the assigned task without too much supervision and without asking too much

questions. They should be able to finish their projects without asking to their classmates or to

ask their teacher again.

Dealing with pupils that are inattentive at times become problematic when it persists

over and over. Teachers will tend to stop what they are doing and address the inattentive pupils

causing disruption of class. There should be a reason or factors that affect this behavior, hence,

this study.

Action Research Questions

This action research will examine the factors affecting the inattentiveness among Grade

V-Trapezoid pupils of Belison Central School during the School Year 2019-2020.

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

1. What are the factors affecting the inattentiveness of Grade V pupils?

2. What is the most effective strategy among the proposed motivational strategies?

3. What actions should be undertaken to address the problem of inattentiveness among

Grade V pupils?

Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

To address the problem of inattentiveness of the pupils, the following motivational

strategies should be applied:

1. Use of multimedia or video presentation during instruction in applicable

competencies;

2. Reward (extra points) for the pupils who can respond accurately to the questions

thrown by the teacher during instructions;

3. The teacher will have the star chart for every performance output; and

4. The teacher should improve the art of questioning.

Action Research Methods

This study will make use of descriptive method of research to delineate the factors

affecting the inattentiveness of Grade V pupils.

a. Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information

The target participants of the study will be 34 Grade V-Trapezoid pupils of Belison

Central School who are officially enrolled during the school year 2019-2020.

b. Data Gathering Methods

To gather the needed data, a questionnaire on factors affecting inattentiveness consists

of 10 items was developed by the researcher. To answer this instrument, the participants were

required to indicate their extent of agreement to each statement in the instrument by checking

one factor affecting their inattentiveness.

c. Ethical Issues

Prior to administration of the instrument, permission to conduct the study was obtained

from the Office of School Principal and Class Advisers of Grade V-Trapezoid pupils. Likewise,

prior consent from the parents of Grade V-Trapezoid was secured before the participants were

permitted to answer the questionnaire. All data gathered in this study was treated with utmost

confidentiality and anonymity.

d. Data Analysis Plan

The data gathered in this study was analyzed and interpreted using mean and rank as

descriptive statistical tool.

Action Research Work Plan and Timelines

The following timelines were observed in the conduct of this study:

Research Activity Duration Timelines

1. Preparation of research proposal 2 weeks September 17-28, 2018

2. Implementation of the Strategy 6 months October-March, 2019

3. Data collection activities 1 week March 18-22, 2019

4. Data analysis and interpretation 1 week March 25-29, 2019

5. Preparation of final report 1 week April 1-5, 2019

The possible findings of this study will be used by all teachers as bases of their

classroom management strategies.

Likewise, the findings of this study will be utilized in formulating policies and

interventions to address the problem of inattentiveness in schools.

Finally, the findings of this study will be presented or disseminated to other educators

and researchers during the annual research forum of the Department of Education, Division of

Antique.
