I.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES
A. CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American literature and other text types
serve as means of preserving unchanging values in a changing world; also how to use the features of
a full-length play, tense consistency, modals, active and passive constructions plus direct and indirect
speech to enable him/her competently performs in a full-length play.
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner competently performs in a full- length play through applying effective verbal and non-
verbal strategies and ICT resources based on the following criteria: Focus, Voice, Delivery and
Dramatic Conventions.

C. Learning Competencies
Analyse literature as a means of understanding unchanging values in a changing world (EN9LT-IVb-
17)

At the end of the lesson with the use of PowerPoint presentation, 80% of the learners are expected to:
a. realize what figure of speech is;
b. identify the figure of speech in the sentences/story; and;
c. expound the importance of using figurative language in literature.

D. MOTIVATION ( 15 minutes)
Last time, we draw some symbols out of the
Parable. This time, I want you to draw a symbol
that best describes you as a person.
I have here a sample for myself.
This is a TREE. I use this symbol because I am like
a tree. It bears fruit. I also bear fruit--fruit of love Alright, Sir.
and joy for those people I cherished the most. I
also have roots which represents my sense of
conviction and principle. If I am a tree, what are
you?

E. PRESENTATION (15 minutes)


Our lesson for today is all about FIGURES OF
SPEECH.

Before anything else, I want you to accomplish the


following.

Task: Jumbled Letters


Accomplish the Task within 3 minutes.

ELIMSI Is a figure of speech which compare two persons or objects using the
words “like” or “as”
ROHAPETM Is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is denoting one kind of
object or idea is used in place of another to suggest and analogy
between them.
IONTFICAOINSPRE Is giving an attribute or characteristic of human to an object or thing.
BOLEYHREP Is an exaggerated statement which is not meant to be taken literally.
ASOPEHPORTS Addressing to something or someone which/who is not present or
living.

Let us open our ears and hearts as we discuss the
FIGURE OF SPEECH.

These are words of phrases that have a different


meaning aside from its literal definition.
For you to understand its meaning easily, let’s
have literal vs. figurative language.
Let’s take a look at this example:
1. Her skin is whiter than the milk.
2. I told you to clean your room a million times.
The literal meaning of the first example is – the
skin is whiter than the milk. (which is impossible)
The second example has a literal meaning of
someone being told to clean her room one million
times. (Which is again impossible.)
Now the figurative meaning of the first example is
her skin is really white.
And the figurative meaning of the second example
is you are being told many times to clean your
room.
Another example is:
I watched the Spiderman Movie a million times.
Literal meaning of it is ___________?
Very good!
Figurative meaning is _________? You watched the Spiderman Movie a million times.

To start with our figure of speech, the first one is
