Project work
Mass wasting occurs commonly around the world. Many measures have been put in
place to manage and limit the damages caused by various mass wasting processes.
some measures help to predict when mass wasting may happen, other measures help
to reduce the impact of mass wasting while other measures help with the efficient
management of and responses to mass wasting. Do research on the internet to find
out what some of these measures are.
• Identify and describe three different measures and classify them into different
headings.
• List the advantages and disadvantages of one of the measure.
• Would you use this measure to manage mass wasting in your country? Why?
Explain your answer using a graphic organizer.

We cannot prevent mass wasting, however, in many situations there are actions we can take to reduce
or mitigate the damaging effects of mass wasting on people and infrastructure. Where we can neither
delay nor mitigate mass wasting, we may consider trying to initiate the slope failure in a controlled
manner.

Methods of mitigation of mass wasting hazards include:

1. Forestation.
2. Construction of fences, walls, or ditches to contain rock fall.
3. Construction of catchment dams to contain debris flows.
4. Improved drainage of source areas.
5. Slope stabilization.

Measure that helps with the prediction of mass wasting

Remote sensing allows for the user to assess the steepness of a slope from afar and predict the flow of
earth, if a mass wasting event were to occur.

Measures that help reduce the impact of mass wasting

Mass movements can sometimes be avoided by employing engineering techniques to make the slope
more stable. Engineering solutions include barriers and retaining walls, drainage pipes, terracing the
slope to reduce the steepness of the cuts, and immediate revegetation. Rock falls can be controlled or
eliminated by the use of rock bolts, cables, and screens and by cutting back slopes to lesser gradients.
Steep slopes can be covered or sprayed with concrete covered or with a wire mesh to prevent rock falls.
Retaining walls could be built to stabilize a slope.

I would definitely use this measure in my country if it were upto me, I would use this measure because if
not completely stopping the flow of waste it would at least reduce the impact of mass wasting and it
would do some help and there would be less damage and more chances of better repairment.
